Parent’s Parking Across My Drive

Dazedandconfused170 · 18/10/2022 15:29

Just wondering is there anything I can do about it or just suck it up basically

Whenever I work from home or am off (I now work part time), at 9 and 3 nearly every time a car parks across my drive when dropping off and picking up their kids from school. Different cars so not always the same one.

The drive can fit two cars on, so most of the time they aren’t blocking my car but blocking the rest of the space so no other car can get onto the drive.

I have asked a couple times politely when they got back to their car not to block it and they apologies and whatever. I did email the school just to ask if they can put a reminder in their newsletter because aside from this, they park on bends and on junctions making it so difficult to get around.

Obviously nothing has stopped but what realistically can I do, if anything

Are they parking over the dropped kerb?

Feel your pain, I live opposite a hospital and have it with nurses. I stand vigil by my shutters until they come back and tell them that access is needed at all times as I need two cars on my drive. I also put flyers in the windscreen and ring the council to send traffic wardens as its a permit only street

bit curmugeonly but I'm sick of it, most apologise but one turned round and said "but I'm a nurse" ... didn't quite know what to say!

Is your street residents only parking? could you petition the council to make it so? I suppose the saving grace is the school run impact, whilst annoying, is short - the nurses block my drive for 8 hours +

Are they parking adjacent to your dropped kerb? Every sympathy if they are as that's completely unreasonable. If you don't have a legitimate driveway/dropped kerb suck it up.

XCTX · 21/10/2022 10:00

Just saw they;re not parking on a dropped kerb

Oh dear OP - nothing you can do! (except apply for one)

XCTX · 21/10/2022 10:01

@whoknew123 right across the dropped kerb in front of my property (such is the level of parking in my street they park wherever they can)..so in this instance I won't suck it up ta ;)

XCTX · 21/10/2022 10:04

@whoknew123 also they shouldn't be parking anywhere in my street as non-residents with no permits. let alone for 8+ hours.

DosCervezas · 21/10/2022 10:15

If it's permit only usually the council are all over it to make some money. They are round here anyway.

How have you managed a dropped kerb of two cars width? It's usually only one car width allowed to be the drive entrance.

Dazedandconfused170 · 20/10/2022 23:21

I don’t ever block anyone’s access to park on their drive, no

It's not a driveway. If they're parking beside the bit WITHOUT a dropped curb they're legally parked.

pyjamafashionista · 21/10/2022 10:38

girlmom21 · 21/10/2022 09:37

For people to laugh at?

Generally, most "decent" people wouldn't park if there was a sign such as this. Clearly you don't fall I to this category.

girlmom21 · 21/10/2022 10:40

@pyjamafashionista if it's a perfectly legal parking space there's no reason not to park there. Putting a sign up because you're too cheap to pay for a dropped curb isn't a solution.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/10/2022 10:44

The drive can fit two cars on, so most of the time they aren’t blocking my car but blocking the rest of the space so no other car can get onto the drive

It varies depending on your brough but blocking access to your parking bay isn't an offence where I live .
Blocking someone in is .
Blocking someone out isn'y .

There were loads of householders getting parking tickets because their drives were blocked and they had to park elsewhere (yellow lines) and they were told there was nothing they could do Shock.

balalake · 21/10/2022 10:49

Sticky labels. Police if their breath smells of alcohol.

The best option (letting down tyres) is illegal.

AliceMcK · 21/10/2022 10:49

The problem is people are far too entitled and disrespectful to care. I have the same problem, I live next to 2 schools, one finishes 15 mins after my DCs school so I try and find things to do just to avoid coming home and clashing with the parents, they have absolutely zero respect for residents, they park across everyone’s driveways, block my garage, it’s a small road, only room for parking on one side and the school creates a dead end. The school has been asking parents for years not to block the road but they all still drive down it creating chaos. One time when I needed to go straight home after the school run I asked someone to move as they were blocking my garage and got abused in front of my small children.

The other school finishes 30 mins later, it’s a private fee paying school, lots of 4x4s omg the entitlement is unbelievable. They will use our tiny road as a pick up point and just sit idling in their cars in the middle of the road till their kids turn up, they don’t care if anyone wants to get past.

The thing is there are 2 car parks they can use, one belongs to the church that sits between the 2 schools, it has a private path leading to each school the children use when attending church, so far safer for the children, yet they either don’t use it or abuse it, the poor priest got verbally abused for asking people not to park on the grass. The car park can easily take 40+ cars. There is another car park offered by a local club, it’s literally 3 mins walk to either school but the parents are too lazy to use it.

You can keep complaining to the council about getting wardens and the hazards the parents are causing. It worked for us, the council ended us cordoning our road off and only residents were allowed in and out at certain times. They stopped doing it from September, it’s been better than it has in the past but the buildup of cars is gradually starting to get worse again.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/10/2022 10:52

let them park and then park across your own drive blocking them in. Nothing illegal about that

Blocking someones access to the highway is illegal so you cannot block a CF parker in, .

Unfortunately this weasel type suggestion is a sad reflection of how territorial people can be about the road outside their home which they don't own. Im not condoning blocking driveways, but I have strong feelings on this matter after my 4 month old car was keyed for the entire length whilst completely legally and reasonably parked outside a person's house -which was not a driveway- who had a similar attitude. I assume you or they never park near anyone's home on a public road?

CallTheMobWife · 21/10/2022 11:16

RudsyFarmer · 21/10/2022 09:27

My advice is to take a photo and send the registration to the school in an email every single time. Honestly the schools get quite rattled if residents constantly complain and there are much more likely to sort it out than if you just stay silent and simmer.

So the school can tell you that parents can park there legally and to leave them alone?

Have you read the OPs updates? How are the other drivers are being selfish when it's not even a dropped kerb. The only thing that needs to stop here is the OP thinking the drivers are doing something wrong.

SophieJo · 21/10/2022 13:29

‘the dropped curb isn’t the whole length of the drive unfortunately so that’ll be why they think they can park there, and like you say it’s never 2 mins!
there are plenty of spaces to park further down the road they’re just lazy.’

i was feeling sorry for you until I read this. You need to pay to extend your dropped kerb or stop moaning as it isn’t illegal to park where there isn’t one.

whoknew123 · 21/10/2022 13:33

Like I said, if you have a full width dropped kerb that is being parked adjacent to, every sympathy for you hun x

RIPQueen · 21/10/2022 13:34

Hahahhahaha this is such a fail of a thread!!!!!!!!!!!

Dazedandconfused170 · 21/10/2022 22:23

😂 ok I didn’t realise people got so hell bent on what is classified as a drive and what isn’t

what’s funny is a lot of you seem more irate about this than me

feel free to keep posting, I however am dipping out and moving on. We are free to post whatever we like on here, I came to share my annoyance and nothing more👍🏻

The trouble is there are other people who do use the drive as well as me so it prevents them being able to park here. They have blocked me in before and made it really difficult for me to park on the drive.

Like I said I’m pretty sure there’s not much I can do but it would be great if a warden or someone like that did patrol the area not just for parking across driveways but because they do make it dangerous at times.
I’ve had a look at the H lines and you can apply for them but unsure if the problem is worth 70 odd quid..

the dropped curb isn’t the whole length of the drive unfortunately so that’ll be why they think they can park there, and like you say it’s never 2 mins!

it’s not like I’m letting it take over my life or anything it’s just an annoyance - i am surprised at the cheek of a lot of people lol I’d never dream of doing it!

But I’m glad most of you agree with my annoyance, sometimes you just want someone else’s opinion😅

Frustrating as it is, if they are not parking over a dropped curb there is nothing you can do.

If you pay for a dropped curb to run the length of your drive then this would be different.

A friend had their drive/garage blocked when he was trying to go to work. Knew they'd be at the dentist near by, went in asked if it was Antone's car and please move otherwise they'd call the police. Noone came out. He called the police, who came out ast the same time as a young lass came out of the dentist, hadn't believed he'd really call the police.

Police came out because he wasn't able to leave his house, needed to get to work, however had he been trying to get back INTO his garage then they would not have come . It's seen as offence to bloke someone leaving their residence but not on returning.
People parking at schools are arseholes. Our school regularly sends out reminders and they're just ignored by people who feel entitled to do what they want.
It was discussed on a local FB page and s ok neo e suggested cars park on the grassed area opposite so parents walking their kids could walk on the pavement rather than the road. Their response was 'but our child will have to get out on The road side and that's dangerous' !! But making dozen of kids walk on the roads cos of your inconsiderate parking isn't??!
