Parent’s Parking Across My Drive

Dazedandconfused170 · 18/10/2022 15:29

Just wondering is there anything I can do about it or just suck it up basically

Whenever I work from home or am off (I now work part time), at 9 and 3 nearly every time a car parks across my drive when dropping off and picking up their kids from school. Different cars so not always the same one.

The drive can fit two cars on, so most of the time they aren’t blocking my car but blocking the rest of the space so no other car can get onto the drive.

I have asked a couple times politely when they got back to their car not to block it and they apologies and whatever. I did email the school just to ask if they can put a reminder in their newsletter because aside from this, they park on bends and on junctions making it so difficult to get around.

Obviously nothing has stopped but what realistically can I do, if anything

@Hillarious I agree. OP you don't say whether you need to go out during these times and that mostly it doesn't block you in. Unless it is, then sorry I'm just not with you, there are far worse things in life, and if there was no where else to park and I needed to drive to school I don't think I would think twice about parking as you describe as long as the car in the drive could get out. I wouldn't do it again if it became clear there was another car to get in at that time, nor would I leave the car unattended other than the 2 minutes to walk to the gate, but I just think there are bigger things in life to worry about and unless it's actively stopping you doing something then I think we all need to rub along. Before I am accused of all things under the sun I say this as someone who lives on a No through road where two businesses regularly block the road. They could park in law where but it's much easier to drop goods this way. Yes I expect them to move asap if I need to get out but other than that, we'll life is too short...

Dazedandconfused170 · 18/10/2022 18:51

The trouble is there are other people who do use the drive as well as me so it prevents them being able to park here. They have blocked me in before and made it really difficult for me to park on the drive.

Like I said I’m pretty sure there’s not much I can do but it would be great if a warden or someone like that did patrol the area not just for parking across driveways but because they do make it dangerous at times.
I’ve had a look at the H lines and you can apply for them but unsure if the problem is worth 70 odd quid..

the dropped curb isn’t the whole length of the drive unfortunately so that’ll be why they think they can park there, and like you say it’s never 2 mins!
there are plenty of spaces to park further down the road they’re just lazy.

it’s not like I’m letting it take over my life or anything it’s just an annoyance - i am surprised at the cheek of a lot of people lol I’d never dream of doing it!

But I’m glad most of you agree with my annoyance, sometimes you just want someone else’s opinion😅

I obviously try to avoid going anywhere during those times but can’t always be helped with appointments etc

That’s a massive drip feed. Of course they can park where there’s no drop curve, and you wouldn’t be able to get H lines to cover that bit

CottonSock · 18/10/2022 19:09

So they are parking legally after all then.

Yarnosaur · 18/10/2022 19:11

So they're not actually parking on a dropped kerb at all. YABU.

StripeyDeckchair · 18/10/2022 19:16

Write a note on their window with an old lipstick.

Notagain12 · 18/10/2022 19:19

I wouldn’t personally do it but does it actually effect you? I mean do you need to get in and out each time someone is parked there and is it an issue? If not, I’d probably get over it.

Think £70 is nothing, definitely worth that unless you are completely skint.

I would get on to your local councillor about the general issue and ask for help.

dapsnotplimsolls · 18/10/2022 19:26

Page 3 and no diagram? Tsk.

lannistunut · 18/10/2022 19:27

Oh! Didn't spot the dropped kerb doesn't cover the whole drive. Basically tough shit then.

MumDadBingoBlueyy · 18/10/2022 19:29

Our local area ran a campaign where you could take photos of cars parked illegally and they then sent letters. Helped for a bit 😊

Djmaggie · 18/10/2022 19:30

I have exactly the same issue and the lazy, selfish drivers really wind me up. I shouldn’t have to obviously, but I park on the street blocking my own drive if I need to go out around drop off/pick up time.

Grumpybutfunny · 18/10/2022 19:38

Don't buy a house on a school street? If the curb isn't dropped they aren't breaking the law

daisy46 · 18/10/2022 20:16

since you don't have a dropped kerb, YABU. they are parking legally.

isitginoclock · 18/10/2022 21:13

So if they're parking not on a dropped curb and there aren't double yellows/parking restrictions then it's really annoying, but not illegal. You could buy a clamp, but I suspect that's illegal. What's not illegal? You have two cars? Park one just behind where they park... let them park and then park across your own drive blocking them in. Nothing illegal about that.

Wibbly1008 · 18/10/2022 21:14

Buy cones and put them out in the kerb. People are so bloody cheeky.

NCAutumn · 18/10/2022 21:17

YABU. They're fine to park there

Towcester · 18/10/2022 21:21

Sounds like mine. Nothing you can do unless you apply to the council to drop the rest of the kerb. Might cost about a grand though.

outtheshowernow · 18/10/2022 21:23

Get some cones

Notanotherwindow · 18/10/2022 21:31

Handful of bird seed over the bonnet. Gulls will solve your problem for you.

AliMonkey · 18/10/2022 21:33

@Dazedandconfused170 so actually it's anyone accessing that part of your drive that is acting illegally by driving over a pavement with no dropped kerb, and they are not doing anything wrong.

Notanotherwindow · 18/10/2022 21:34

However if they aren't over the dropped curb there is nothing you can do. It isn't legally a driveway, just a paved garden without one.

HighlandPony · 18/10/2022 21:36

If you need to I’d park across it yourself. It’s tough. I can see it both ways. Our villages had three wee village schools shut a few years ago and while a school bus is provided to get the kids to and from school in the nearest town, if they miss the bus, if they’re at breakfast club or after school clubs or if you need to pick them up for something you’ve got no option but to drive really. I understand a lot of parents are just lazy but there’s just as many of us who never asked for our local schools to be shut. There should be more parking at schools who have a catchment from further away.
