To wonder why Brits aren't protesting in the streets?

I used to live in the U.K. and I can't for the life of me work out why the British people aren't protesting the government, given how utterly shafted you have all been by them, and how things have been getting worse and worse over the last few years.

Working people needing food banks and "warm houses" because the costs of living is so outrageous, the nhs is utterly broken unless it's an emergency and even then people have to wait hours for an ambulance, social care virtually doesn't exist now, transport is crap and constantly striking, there have been so many lies it's impossible to count, multiple leaders over a short time, u turn after u turn, prioritising the ultra rich, I mean this is just off the top of my head...

In any other country on earth people would take to the streets to protest or even riot... why don't Brits?

Speaking from experience, the most dangerous person, is the person left with nothing else to lose. So far the world, including the UK isn’t there yet. When you can’t feed your children nor keep them warm. When they get sick, crying and cold and you can’t get them better. When you can’t afford to run your car nor heat your house…. When you have lost everything and the only thing to gain is to protest and scream/shout and fight and burn down everything to be heard - all you have left is your voice and your fists….. we aren’t there yet. But it’s coming.

@TooBigForMyBoots answer my question!! Economists predicted this then!

@WahineToa 12 years of Tory corruption, incompetence and arrogance has destroyed our economy. Your Baaa Baaa Baaaaht Layyyburrr did something years ago🙄 is both tedious and pointless.

OnlyTheBravest · 17/10/2022 12:15

The point people on this thread are making is that the situation the UK is in now is not just a Tory problem.

Where would the UK be now if Tony Blair had listened to the people protesting and not joined war in Iraq.

What if the Lib Dems did not form a coalition government and trebled student loans overnight despite large protests.

What if the media had not pushed the UK into lockdown.

The UK public has tried protesting. It has not got us very far. We have changed leadership and it has not made much difference. It is no surprise that voter apathy is at its highest. We need a party with determination to actually make difficult changes but this will not happen as this will not benefit the ruling elite.

Why protest lose pay and risk gaining a criminal record for no real change. Ask the people who took part in the riots that swept across England in 2011, if they are better off.

WahineToa · 17/10/2022 12:19

@TooBigForMyBoots you are completely clueless about the economy and pensions in particular if you don’t know why Brown is a factor in the pensions fiasco. I mean wtf!!!

DangerNoodles · 17/10/2022 12:19

I live in the North. Most people I know see protesting as something jobless posh kids with too much time on thier hands do. I don't think people want to be seen to be like the milk pourers in Fortnum and Mason or the road blockers who delay ambulances. People who work/raise children etc don't have enough time to protest or can afford to travel to London to protest near to those who make the decisions.

DangerNoodles · 17/10/2022 12:20

*can't afford to travel

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/10/2022 12:21

I also live in the north.

l don’t know anyone who sees protests for ‘posh’ kids. Plenty of my friends and colleagues are actively protesting. As did l as a student. And l wasn’t a ‘posh’ kid.

Mrsmch123 · 17/10/2022 12:22

lots of people saying about time off ect yet these fools are causing chaos protesting about oil.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/10/2022 12:29

@WahineToa, this Tory government knew the situation wrt pensions. They still announced their insane policies. Doubled down when people pointed out the problems and destroyed what little we had left in terms of credit and goodwill.

I'm not responsible for this clusterfuck. Nor is Gordon Brown, or Labour, or the BoE or poor people/ disabled people, or the IMF or EU or even Putin. The Tory government and the voters who put them there are responsible.

Marketingbear · 17/10/2022 12:29

Because protesting is for the likes of Carrie Johnson.

I'm literally not posh enough to protest

Marketingbear · 17/10/2022 12:30

Maybe the posh protests are regional? I'm in Exeter and protestors tend to have rich daddies

WahineToa · 17/10/2022 12:35

@TooBigForMyBoots you are completely ignorant.

🤣🤣🤣 thanks for the laugh @TooBigForMyBoots . Your vast knowledge on British politics is hilarious.

I worked for the NHS during the Blair years when he started to rip it to bits and aim to bring along its downfall. Yeah, labour are the only ones who can get us out of this mess his legacy left 🙄

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2022 12:50

because we have a stiff upper lip

generally protesters dont worry about these issues

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2022 12:52

And you are blind to what is happening. Are you in the UK?

Suzi888 · 17/10/2022 12:55

Because most are doing ok and the rest can’t be arsed. 🤷🏼‍♀️

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2022 13:02

Shame. Quite a few very important historical protests were started and fuelled by students.

Galaktoboureko · 17/10/2022 13:16

Protesting over transport workers also protesting would be an odd dynamic.
