To wonder why Brits aren't protesting in the streets?

I used to live in the U.K. and I can't for the life of me work out why the British people aren't protesting the government, given how utterly shafted you have all been by them, and how things have been getting worse and worse over the last few years.

Working people needing food banks and "warm houses" because the costs of living is so outrageous, the nhs is utterly broken unless it's an emergency and even then people have to wait hours for an ambulance, social care virtually doesn't exist now, transport is crap and constantly striking, there have been so many lies it's impossible to count, multiple leaders over a short time, u turn after u turn, prioritising the ultra rich, I mean this is just off the top of my head...

In any other country on earth people would take to the streets to protest or even riot... why don't Brits?

So where are the Labour voter protests? Or people who've voted for every party? The majority of the country aren't conservatives.

PrioritiseCalm · 17/10/2022 11:16

Because our government have made protesting illegal.

Exactly.

Stop blaming other people. Your Tory government have brought the UK to the edge of bankruptcy.

Time to take responsibility.

Feel free to protest. But imo it comes down to earlier post - far easier to post on SM for those outraged. It means people stay home and vent online instead

Obviously it’s up to you which approach you take.

So why aren't you protesting instead of blaming other people?

TwoTowels · 17/10/2022 11:28

Because street protests have zero effect on government policy or action.

The 100,000+ people who marched in London to protest against the Iraq war almost 20 years ago will attest to that.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/10/2022 11:30

Not in England. Not my mess.

You voted for this shower of irresponsible, incompetent, corrupt, lying cunts. You sort it out.

I get that you won't, instead you'll keep bleating 4 legs good, 2 legs better but laybour like it means anything.

Again, the majority of the UK didn't vote for them.

If there was a better option at the time, why didn't they win the election?

You don't need to be aggressive towards posters who are the ones living through this shit.

girlmom21 · 17/10/2022 11:34

Has anyone in this thread even said it would have been worse with a Labour government @TooBigForMyBoots?

In the main, most have the Party they voted for and wanted. So I can't envisage any mass protest. Anyone I know who is anti-Tory has lots to say on social media but, they don't vote. I suspect they're silent Tory voters or abstain because really, they want the Government we have. In the real world day to day I don't sense anti-Tory sentiments at all really.

Tories feed the great crave to feel 'better than the poor' dont they; if you have a job house and car and loads of 'stuff' you can enjoy looking down on those that dont. Schadenfreude and working & middle class snobbery will always be a thing.

But it’s still impacting you right? So you could protest to show you don’t want it, or lose it on here

There are a few things that would make me protest and I’d just do it if so motivated

The 100,000+ people who marched in London to protest against the Iraq war almost 20 years ago will attest to that.

The police admitted that there were more than 750,000 who marched in London in 2003 and the BBC said 1 million. My partner was up at the front and waited nearly seven hours for me, somewhere at the back, to reach Hyde Park. I come from the marching generation and attended many big marches in the 80s and 90s, but the Stop the War one in 2003 was the biggest by far. The Remain march in 2019 was similar in size.

www.nytimes.com/2019/10/19/world/europe/brexit-peoples-vote-march.html

When a million people turn out to tell the government it's making a big mistake, they really should listen. Those were both peaceful marches full of thoughtful people.

girlmom21 · 17/10/2022 11:51

@Heilalala to be fair she said she's not in England, not that she's not in the UK. Not sure why that means she can't protest though as the government is clearly affecting her too

People always talk about how in other countries people don’t stand for anything and protest in their droves.

But what good does protesting actually do? When has real change ever been brought about through protesting?

Protests are essentially just a way for people to voice their dissatisfaction, protests aren’t going to bring about change, just as they don’t bring about change anywhere else, and being a country prone to riots as happens in some countries is hardly an accolade to aspire to.

Every big systemic and social change in history happened because of protests

Heilalala · 17/10/2022 11:55

@TooBigForMyBoots The point is, it's clearly affecting a lot so why not do something about it if you feel so strongly? You can't expect people who have barely been affected by rising costs to feel motivated to do anything on your behalf.

WahineToa · 17/10/2022 11:57

Your Tory government have brought the UK to the edge of bankruptcy.

So Gordon Brown has had nothing to do with the pensions situation then?

Did he hide it from the Conservative party for 12 years and spring it on them recently?
