I haven’t had much luck over the years and simply cannot afford to buy another that doesn’t suit our needs. It would have to deal with dust from a real fire, a dog that casts constantly, and a couple of children with very long hair, oh and some shaggy rugs too. I’m thinking more an upright but maybe a Henry or equivalent? I don’t have family to ask for recommendations so thought I’d post here. Thanks.

Miele. No matter what anyone on here says, don't even contemplate a Dyson!

FuzzyPuffling · 15/10/2022 15:47

Henry.
He's quite heavy and bulky, but man, he's a sucky little bugger!

JudithHarper · 15/10/2022 15:47

Henry.

Almostlegible · 15/10/2022 15:47

Shark upright. Much better than Dyson.

OrangeBlossom28 · 15/10/2022 15:48

Shark upright with the hair wrap.

helpmum2003 · 15/10/2022 15:49

Henry. He's at least as good as Miele/sebo I've had before and well priced.

boobot1 · 15/10/2022 15:49

Shark much better than dyson

Discovereads · 15/10/2022 15:50

I like my dyson. Only hoover that seems to suck up the dust and not spit it back out.

Buzzer3555 · 15/10/2022 15:52

I have a hetty and it's great for dealing with hair from 2 dogs and long haired daughters

abblie · 15/10/2022 15:53

Henry ! He's a bulky nuisance wee chap but does the job, never lets me down and cleans up after my long haired german shepherd in one sweep

Anaphylaxis · 15/10/2022 15:56

Miele

lancashirelady · 15/10/2022 15:57

Henry without a doubt. The suction is fantastic.

Luzina · 15/10/2022 15:58

I have shark upright and it’s really really heavy. Really good but way too heavy. I had a dyson upright before and it was fairly similar to the shark but it was lighter. I wouldn’t buy a dyson or a shark again, think I’d get a Henry (had one years ago and it never failed me)

LadyHestia · 15/10/2022 16:29

A few to look at; great, thanks.

Miele. Just brilliant (I have a Shark too but much prefer the Miele).

Medoca · 15/10/2022 16:32

Shark upright anti hair wrap. Found it better than the Miele and Dyson. Like the way it comes apart to clean under things. Henry is too bulky for me, we have lots of stairs.

HappyHolidai · 15/10/2022 16:39

Henry. And get the red brush head attachment that spins round: great for pet hair (and human). Much better than the original black head floor attachment he comes with.

AhNowTed · 15/10/2022 16:41

Miele every time.

notanothertakeaway · 15/10/2022 16:52

Most professional cleaners seem to use Henry. We have one and it's excellent

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 15/10/2022 16:54

I have this Shark one and really impressed. It's got good suction, very light, can be easily turned into a handheld which is great on stairs. It has lights on the head so you can see under the sofas and all the crevices as you're hoovering which was initially disturbing 😂 I deliberately went with corded rather than the more expensive cordless version because I know myself and I would always forget to charge the stupid thing and then get annoyed if it ran out of juice.

I have a shark upright and hate it. Terrible with dog hair, filter needs washed very regularly, falls over when using crap tools. Power head for stairs is a waste of time. Poor suction on hard floors. It is the worst vacuum I have ever owned.

Think I am going for a miele cat and dog when the shark gives up, I usually prefer an bagless upright but will give the cylinder a go.

Fairislefandango · 15/10/2022 16:58

I HATE my Henry! I have all hard floors and he's so sucky that the end constantly gets sucked off the end of the hose iyswim. And the hose itself becomes detached from Henry. Plus he's heavy and bulky and has an annoying smiley face.

I wish I had an upright hoover again, but although Henry's bits fall off with infuriating regularity, I doubt he'll ever actually fully break down, the sturdy little sod, so I don't feel like I'd be justified in replacing him! He is great for hoovering under beds, I'll grudgingly give him that.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/10/2022 16:59

G-Tech - had one and it fell down the stairs after 10 years and broke, got a second hand Dyson, not as good, new Shark - couldn't pick up anything, stuck G-tec together with duct tape and it hung on for another year

Just replaced it with a new G-tech and handheld one - they are brilliant

Mum had a Henry - I really hated it - sorry!

I'm a housekeeper and have met a lot of vacuum cleaners, my favourites are all Miele.

WizardOfUK · 15/10/2022 17:05

We've got 4 dogs, hardwood floors and a log burner. We've gone through vacuum cleaners like they are going out of fashion. 3 dysons in less than 6 years. I've just bought a vax dog for £89 plus an extra £20 which means if it blocks or breaks over the next 3 years I take it back and they replace it fix, as many times as I need during that time. This is from Curry's.

The way I look at it is, I've now got a vacuum cleaner that will work for the next 3 years. I've just tried it and it's good. If it breaks or blocks then I'll simply exchange it. Not bad for £110, or £37 a year
