Long story short, bought a bag from a trusted authorised retailer months ago, realised last week that it's fake, and had my eyes opened to this scam that apparently is 'common'.

Here's how it usually goes:

  1. Person buys something from authorised retailer, maybe even the actual store
  2. Person buys a good fake from Amazon etc
  3. Person returns the fake to the original retailer
  4. Next person ordering from the original retailer gets the fake

It wasn't a majorly expensive bag (about £75 but it's one that is popular with counterfeiters) but it is disappointing especially since I paid a premium for a brand that's famed for having durable stuff that was supposed to last me 10 years only to get a fake that broke in months!

Just thought I should let everyone know that just because you buy something from the official store or official retailer doesn't necessarily mean it's real these days!

I read an entertaining book on this very thing recently called ‘Counterfeit’. It was about this very type of scam but on high-end, luxury handbags.

Counterfeited £75 bags?

Are they counterfeiting 5p coins instead of £20 notes as well?

Fake pound coins is why we have the bi metal ones we have now.

People knock anything off

Thanks for the warning, OP, I didn't know this was a thing, but I don't buy much fashion online.
Perhaps we should go back to personally shopping in actual stores?
Town centres are dying everywhere.
I had to visit Stafford yesterday (Saturday) and it was shocking. Boarded up and empty shops everywhere and very few people around except a few queuing at Greggs.
But maybe that is a topic for another thread.

There's more than the circle over the A that is different between those logos

  • the dots beside the As are smaller
  • the size of the hole on the As is smaller
  • the tail of the J is shorter
  • the space between the right ear and the L is larger
  • the base of the Ls is shorter
  • the middle stroke of the E is longer
  • the space between the Ns on the right is larger
  • the middle stroke of the N is thicker
  • the length and thickness of the line behind the head towards the right ear
  • the straightness of the white line across the head where it joins the left ear
  • the length and thickness of the white line coming up to the left ear
  • the shape of the jaw on that line
  • the eye is smaller and placed lower
  • the length and thickness of the nose
  • the curve into the end of the tail

I think all of that suggests the fake logo isn't as sharp. It's not doing finesse - so thin sharp lines, sharp straight edges etc.

I would say things in this price range are counterfeited as the price is low enough to have more people purchase but not high enough that people examine in detail until, like with the OP, the product breaks. 10 quick and easy returns would be much easier than one replica expensive brand. Done at volume, it would make decent money.

Irrespective, consumers shouldn't have to analyse logos to ensure they have received genuine products from stores. Hope the store replaces it for you OP.

I’m someone who doesn’t understand fashion. If the fakes are so well made that the staff can’t tell, then why does it matter if they’re fake?

Same here! If it does its job, why pay premium for a “name”? I don’t think they counterfeit Asda handbags!

ladyofshertonabbas · 16/10/2022 23:58

If it’s any consolation, I’ve had real and fake kankens, and the fakes were much better quality.

DD asked me for a fake one (from ebay) for Christmas, it's lasted nearly 2 years so far and she uses it every day for school.

Why did she want that?

This is the real one.

The eye on the fox on yours is too small as well, and the accents on the other "A"s. You'd think the fakers would try harder!

Sorry this happened to you OP.

What a shitty scam, to then stitch up people who have paid for the genuine article.

Thanks for warning - @WOOp you’re a bit of old Tat love.

Celestialmoonface · 19/10/2022 07:01

This happened to me with a kettle! Although the kettle in the box was a manky old rusty thing in the box so I don’t know how it got back on the shop floor
