Long story short, bought a bag from a trusted authorised retailer months ago, realised last week that it's fake, and had my eyes opened to this scam that apparently is 'common'.

Here's how it usually goes:

  1. Person buys something from authorised retailer, maybe even the actual store
  2. Person buys a good fake from Amazon etc
  3. Person returns the fake to the original retailer
  4. Next person ordering from the original retailer gets the fake

It wasn't a majorly expensive bag (about £75 but it's one that is popular with counterfeiters) but it is disappointing especially since I paid a premium for a brand that's famed for having durable stuff that was supposed to last me 10 years only to get a fake that broke in months!

Just thought I should let everyone know that just because you buy something from the official store or official retailer doesn't necessarily mean it's real these days!

The tail on the real is a bit longer too.

I almost bought a fake on holiday earlier this year, but that was for £15 and I'd have been ok with that. Paying full whack, expecting to receive a genuine one and getting a fake instead, nah.

I’m someone who doesn’t understand fashion. If the fakes are so well made that the staff can’t tell, then why does it matter if they’re fake?

Because the staff aren't using them repeatedly and expecting them to last?

'Well made' isn't just about what they look like, particularly with something like a backpack.

Sparklythings1 · 15/10/2022 15:28

people do this all the time with electrical goods apparently, order a new version of their kettle, put the old one in the box then send it back 🤦🏼‍♀️

It wouldn’t surprise me if some people thought this how it worked honestly. I bought something on Vinted from a new seller, the person never sent it, I went to leave a review and there were about 5 reviews posted on the same day saying item never sent. The seller was leaving rants under each one saying it wasn’t her fault Vinted hadn’t shipped the item and it still hadn’t given her HER money. I am not sure if she thought Vinted would collect it from her or if she thought Vinted had a warehouse of identical items and you just had to post a picture of something and they’d ship it and you’d get money for nothing, really don’t know. But some people really are that stupid.

Also, the umlauts above the As on FJALLRAVEN are thicker on the real one.

Hayliebells · 15/10/2022 16:42

I have a kanken and just checked it, and my o above the A is floating too. However, I've got the one with leather handles, and checked the picture on the Fjallraven website of my colour bag, the o is floating on their pic too. Weirdly, for other colours, it's not, it's attached to the A. Have Fjallraven used a different motif for different colours, or do I have a fake, and they've just a picture of a fake on their website?!! Mine certainly doesn't seem like a fake tbh, it's 7 years old and holding up very well.

ReadySetDontGo · 15/10/2022 16:43

TwoMonthsOff · 15/10/2022 16:07

The make is ‘fjallraven’ a long established Norwegian manufacturer, “kanken’ is the model/ style name

And kånka means to carry something that is heavy or difficult.

Hayliebells · 15/10/2022 16:46

Oh I actually just checked and the leather motifs have the o floating above the A on all colours of bags, so I guess it's just different to the original. Phew.

Ah sorry wasn't clear mine is the bog standard one and for that model at least every single official pic of them + the ones I saw at the mall that are definitely genuine all had the o attached to the a.

remember when the BA cabin crew swopped the real watches for high class fakes....!!!...they got away with it for years....!!...my posh friend has real louis vuitton and bought high grade copies in turkey....had the LV shop repair one and they couldnt tell the difference....

BurgundyFlags · 15/10/2022 15:20

This is the real one.

The dots over the A, the eye, the length of the top of the tail are all wrong. But I guess without comparing it would be hard to know. But the staff should have immediately seen it was 'off'

CoffeeIsForClosers · 15/10/2022 17:08

There are some on La Redoute with a floating thingy

Aren't some of these designer bags a scam in the first place? Aren't some of them made in the same place as cheaper makes, it's just some label that makes the difference. It's all a bit emperor's new clothes

The OPs bag broke in a short time. So obviously not made in the same place

jetadore · 15/10/2022 17:12

If the fake is well made, good quality and indistinguishable from the original, apart from a minor difference in the logo then what’s the problem? That some Asian counterfeiter is making money instead of a European millionaire? Worse things happen at sea.

mumda · 15/10/2022 17:13

Pillows too are involved in this scam.

StoneofDestiny · 15/10/2022 17:20

Send it back - and claim postage costs.

There are many reasons, one is that profits may be used to help pay for things like human trafficking or drug dealing.

How exactly would they pay for human trafficking or drug dealing? Or are you saying the criminals have a diversified business model? They’re probably made in the same factory, or a very similar one, to the real thing. Probably not the case for fjallraven but many of ‘reputable’ brands are also happy to use sweatshops and child labour.

Henddraig · 15/10/2022 17:32

My guess is they’re seconds from the same factory - if they’re that close.

This happened in John Lewis when I worked there. Someone claimed their Barber coat popper had come loose. Girl on the till let her exchange like for like as she didn’t have a receipt. Turned out the one she exchanged was a fake and she got herself a lovely new Barber.

And yet we get so many posts from people up in arms because they don’t understand why they need a receipt for an exchange.

Of course it can fund crime, read up on why you shouldn’t buy fake products.

Think my Kanken is real looking at the pictures and online however interestingly I’d say it hasn’t lasted as well as the fakes my parents brought me back from Vietnam. Apparently they are sold everywhere over there. One wonders if they’re lifted from the factory.
