To find the Halloween and Christmas decor available now over the top

Seems to have gone from sticking a pumpkin in the window for Halloween or hanging some decorations on the tree at Christmas to themed duvets, cushions, mugs and outfits for pets etc. I know I don't have to join in and I don't, but I just think it's pretty rubbish environmentally.

It's so they can discount it closer to the actual time.

Here is her pile of rotting food. 😕

There’s really no reason why properly ripened pumpkin and squash should ‘rot’. They are winter storing vegetables, a pumpkin will be edible at least two months after ripening. So all that display could easily be eaten, not wasted.

it’s quite different from plastic tat.

There is a reason. The reason being putting pumpkins and squash in the sun on your doorstep is not actually proper storage for them. 🙄

Hinch isn’t going to eat them. She’s going to bin them.

Agree the rotting food is a waste (tbh Mrs Hinch is a whole topic I could go into about how wasteful she is) but generally I love the Halloween and Christmas decorations I see inside and outside houses. For me I buy the 'plastic tat' but store it and then reuse it every year, same as my Happy Birthday bunting so its not wasteful environmentally or monetarily.

YANBU. We totally ignore Hallowe’en, but it’s so annoying seeing the mountains of shite wheeled out to decorate your house for something that really isn’t decoration-worthy!

(I’m not a total misery, if DC wants to bob for apples and carve a pumpkin when he’s bigger we’ll join in - but no decorating the bloody house).

I find it sad that the more secular our society becomes, the more commercialism enters our festivals and Holy Days. I agree with a pp about the way some people say Easter is going. Decorating your house with plastic eggs and an Easter tree is missing the point somewhat…

Yup, because someone who has made a career out of anti-baccing the shit out of her entire house and whipping out cocktails of chemicals is just the sort of person to be using all that lovely veg which has been sat on the doorstep for most of October.

Of course it's going straight in the bin.

In a planned economy you would either need, small medium and large or basic and advanced models, for quite a lot of products. (I presume)

It seems that with mass production as it is now, their has to be e.g. Lots of various kettles, ect

I love it!
We have Halloween decs, in fact I was nagging DH to get them down today, most are at least ten years old?

I adore getting the house dressed for it and looking autumnal and magical. We have lots of owl's, cats and bats, witches... pumpkins.

It marks the changing of the seasons.

We are Freecyclers and I strongly imagine I've got more second hand free passed on stuff in my house than most people I know. We also pass on a lot.

I also have winter bedding.

We use it from roughly December to February and it gives the other duvet covers a rest so everything lasts longer..

I also have Xmas plates again used for about 3 months.

We got some thick thermal curtains for the heat 🌊 but it made me wonder about winter and summer curtains?

I also change over the cushion covers from yellow to red.

Our house is so small and these changes really refresh us all and make us feel like we are living somewhere New!

I have Easter decs but don't have Easter plates or furnishings.

YANBU - it's so OTT

I have some Halloween bits - paper ghosts and some lights - used every year, and easter twig and eggs - used every year.

Christmas I have a fake and real tree - real tree recycled (by charity - polish my halo!) decoration used yearly - they have sentimental value - I even have 2 camels from my childhood that form part of the nativity

I do carve a pumpkin which we don't eat - sorry

But I guess if people are having a Halloween party they want to decorate for it

Eggs signal rebirth? Birth? Rejuvenation? Same for lamb's and chicks.

The earth is waking up again so I feel it's entirely approach to decorate with such things.

Eggsactly! (sorry) I love painting and blowing eggs - we make pancakes and omelettes with the insides.

I am not a fan of mrs hinch ( neither like or dislike tbf ) but being that she has a sort of small holding now maybe she will give the leftover pumpkins to her animals and surrounding wildlife

I don’t mind things like duvets that can be reused, maybe good costumes as well but the amount of plastic is bad.

And why can’t the decorations be reused? Mine are, I have box’s of halloween decorations reused every year. I also add to them every year. They only get thrown away as a last resort. No different to storing Christmas decorations.

People complaining about plastic waste, what do you think use to happen to the plastic bin bags and cheap plastic masks we use to wear in the 70s & 80s?

I tend not to bother with the one year disposable crap, it’s always solid stuff I bring down from the loft that will last forever

Report

Always4Brenner · 15/10/2022 18:21

My Christmas stuff I’m having green garlands from the range they look realistic and will last years same as my tree with no decorations not needed as snow capped one. Advent calendar wooden and nativity themed again will see me out.

Isn't Hinch obsessed with cleaning? What will she do with all the flies, stench and rotting veg?

That display is OTT and shallow...

🤢

Be careful, Mrs Hinch is apparently immune from discussion on here. 😏 I started a thread about her the other day but it has been deleted.

Ah, well kudos to Mrs Hinch for at least choosing a biodegradable display of festive decor.

@Flowerpower36 did it say why it was deleted? It's ridiculous! I just typed Mrs Hinch into Twitter and had the best laugh. Highly recommended for those who don't appreciate waste and materialism x

We don't bother with Halloween as kids are grown up and we don't have any neighbours with little kids. But I love Christmas no such thing as a themed tree most of my decs have a memory attached. I am looking for a new tree as mine is 7ft and I can't reach properly these days but I am passing it on to my daughter so not wasted. My dd made cushion covers with Xmas trees and reindeer on so we just bring them out every year.
My DH makes me laugh because he has one Christmas t shirt with some joke about a fat bloke on it and he only wears it Christmas day. Washes it and puts it back for next year. I have asked why he doesn't wear it for longer. But no he can't do it.

Plastic fantastic. It's so wasteful and it's all very well saying "well just don't buy it then" but it's already been made and put on the supermarket shelves so the demand is clearly there. People clearly do buy the aisles full of tat at the supermarkets and Home Bargains, which is over packaged, made of plastic and impossible to recycle.

The only Halloween decoration you need is a pumpkin which is entirely compostable and biodegradable.

I wonder just how much of the demand is actually there, as opposed to being desperately manufactured by retailers?
You only have to look at the aisles of this crap being sold off for pennies after the event to see it doesn't always work as they'd like it to.

People like to celebrate in their own ways. If that is covering their house in decorations then so be it. Hell, we all need every little bit of joy we can hold on to nowadays.

Where is the Halloween bedding? I need some.
