To expect November in Cornwall to be mild
fightorflight1 · 13/10/2022 07:13
Looking to plan a weekend trip to west Cornwall in November. What is the weather like at this time of the year? I've never been and have always wanted to but prices pretty much quadruple anytime from March onwards - just not affordable for me.
I'm of course expecting it to be chilly and to wrap up but is this a stupid idea? Will it be absolutely freezing to the point it's not enjoyable? Google is saying it can be mild but thought I'd reach out to MN for real life experiences

Do you live in the UK?
Yes live in the UK - Surrey area
Bbqchicken · 13/10/2022 07:24
It will be very much the same as at home then. Depending on wind speed, it may be chilly/windy by the beach/coast. I'd personally wait until you can see the weather range for the date you are looking at and go from there.

I live in Cornwall. November can be lovely, as in T shirt weather...or very stormy, as in stay in, move anything that might fly and batten down the hatches.
Iheartmykyndle · 13/10/2022 07:26
I've been to Cornwall in the summer and it was colder than it was back home.
Wilkolampshade · 13/10/2022 07:27
I would expect rain and foggy/cloudy over the moors tbh.
There's a reason prices triple between November and March.
TimeForMeToF1y · 13/10/2022 07:27
No way to say, not being funny but if you live in the UK you'll know that past weather is no predictor of future and it's far too early to even guess.
Twinklelittlestar65 · 13/10/2022 07:29
It's much more changeable down the coast. The wind can change and suddenly its warm and your stripping sow

Same. And checking today, Cornwall is a few degrees cooler than where I am in Surrey. Depending on which bits you go to, it’s often a bit cooler by the coast?

Woops down layers or alternatively a storm comes in that can drop the temp. But we often hide in pub and often it clears again!
MinglingFlamingo · 13/10/2022 07:31
I live in Cornwall here's my experience
It might be crisp and cold and bright - love autumn days like that
Stormy
Or low cloud mizzle/ drizzle. Like it was yesterday.
Pack waterproofs not an umbrella as it will just get blown away in rain. It's always a windy rain that's sidewind not straight down.

I live in Cornwall too and agree with this. The weather could do anything.
2 days ago I was walking the dogs in just a t-shirt (and jeans!) and had the windows open because the house was so hot. Then yesterday it pissed it down and was cold enough that I wore a jumper and a coat whilst out. Still not cold enough for the heating to go on though.
fishonabicycle · 13/10/2022 07:33
It's exactly like anywhere else in the UK - unpredictable! Just wait til you go, check the forecast and pack accordingly.
Trethew · 13/10/2022 07:34
Cornwall resident here. Unlikely to be very cold. Almost certain to have some rain and wind
1dayatatime · 13/10/2022 07:35
Just to give you an idea of the temperature difference:
Forecast for tomorrow
Guildford: high 16c / low 9c
Cornwall: high 16 c / low 11c
So basically no difference.
That said it will rain roughly twice as much / often in Cornwall than Guildford in November:
Average rainfall in November
Guildford: 65 mm
Cornwall: 120 mm
Yerroblemom1923 · 13/10/2022 07:37
Will be windy and rainy. It's still a lovely place to visit though and will be nice and quiet as not traditional touristy/ holiday season so no kids etc which is a bonus
rattlemehearties · 13/10/2022 07:37
With a UK winter holiday you have to just make the best of it, surely plan for all eventualities and enjoy walks in all weathers, check what's open seasonally?
BirmaBrite · 13/10/2022 07:42
Unlikely to get snow, but every other type of weather is a possibility
Whereabouts are you heading ?
kingtamponthefurred · 13/10/2022 07:48
You may be lucky-November in Cornwall can be lovely, but it would be wise to expect cold, rain, wind and fog.
CornishTin · 13/10/2022 07:51
It might rain but if you take a decent coat and hat and are up for some windy walks then it will still be lovely. If you plan some days out, visiting specific beaches or national trust walks for example, then the weather won’t matter so much.
I love walking my dogs on the beach during winter and watching the stormy sea. Alternately, it might be a clear still day which isn’t cold, or a crisp icy day.
The weather in Cornwall, as others have said, can change quite dramatically throughout the day.
borntobequiet · 13/10/2022 07:56
You’d probably be better off in October - there are often some warm sunny days in late October - or January when it’s colder but can be wonderfully bright and bracing.
November is rarely a pleasant month anywhere in Britain IME.
Choconut · 13/10/2022 08:17
Windy and rainy would be my best guess having grown up in the SW. Cold in the morning and evening.
BarbaraofSeville · 13/10/2022 08:26
As others have said, the weather can be absolutely anything from sunny and quite mild to awful wind rain storms and everything in between.
I live in Yorkshire and remember a notable November 1st a few years ago where I went for a Dales hike and the weather was glorious, you'd be perfectly happy if you got it in high summer. There was loads of people out and everyone was saying to each other how great the weather was.
Plus microclimates. I'm not an expert on Cornwall, but I expect that it's the kind of place where one coast can be quite nice and the other storms and massive waves. Or quite nice in the lower lying/coastal areas, but rainy and fog bound on the moors.
Unless we're in a country-wide settled high pressure hot weather period, you have to expect any weather and prepare accordingly with clothing and planned activities.
MyneighbourisTotoro · 13/10/2022 08:30
I live in Devon and visit Cornwall all the time, you may get some mild days with lots of sun etc but you’ll also get some very miserable days full of rain and wind.
In general I’ve found the south west to be warmer than the south east during the autumn/winter months but it’s still very cold and more unpredictable and wetter so I’d make sure you pack a good waterproof and lots of warm layers so you are prepared for the colder days.
