Aibu to reject the suggestion that this summers leavers sing Puff the Magic Dragon?

Not least because of the drug reference, but because the parents will weep?

Our leavers sing a “For Good” from Wicked. Lyrics are beautiful and yes the parents cry!

FuzzyPuffling · 14/10/2022 07:21

There was a really sad song about Noah's Ark and the unicorns who wouldn't go in, and the "stood on the rocks and cried". I loathed that as a kid and it always made me cry...I used to switch off the radio when it came on.
Anyone else remember it?

handmademitlove · 14/10/2022 07:31

We used 'when I grow up' from Matilda...

CaptainCallisto · 14/10/2022 07:56

Last year we used When I Grow Up from Matilda, and this year we're planning on Just One Person from the Muppet Show. It's a beautiful song and I'm pretty sure I'll be a blubbing wreck by the end of it!

MoniJitchell · 14/10/2022 07:57

My dd left primary last year and they sang When I Grow Up from Matilda the musical, Good Riddance(Time of your Life) by Green Day with the lyrics changed and finished with I Want to Break Free by Queen. Not a dry eye in the house at When I Grow Up - that's the point of a leavers assembly surely?

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/10/2022 08:02

As a mother which troubled teen I'm weeping at this thread 😂😢

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/10/2022 08:03

How about you got a friend in me from toy story

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/10/2022 08:04

Oh dear. Just read the one that did slipping through my fingers. That's just cruel!!!

anotherdayanotherpathlesstravelled · 14/10/2022 08:05

Just read the lyrics now I'm crying 😭

TeenDivided · 14/10/2022 08:06

I like the idea of 'One more step along the world I go' a PP mentioned.
I think leavers assemblies should be uplifting and looking forward to next adventures, not maudlin about growing up.

handmademitlove · 14/10/2022 08:18

I ha E just remembered that when at secondary school we sang 'this will be our last song together'...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/10/2022 09:38

Honalei is a real place. It's in Hawaii

I just assumed it was the way posh people pronounced the place by the Thames where they have the Regatta Grin

The Neil Sedaka song?! It's poignant, but references lots of NS's previous songs rather than life in general; so I wouldn't have thought it would make a huge amount of sense unless you are Neil Sedaka?!

That has stirred some vague horrifying recollection but no idea as to the song.

PinkyU · 14/10/2022 14:22

I’ll see your “puff the magic dragon” and raise you “slipping through my fingers” by ABBA which was played at my middle DD’s nursery leaving party 😭

I was proudly immune to the emotional manipulation of the Greatest Showman but I just about collapsed when DS's year group sang the one that goes 'and we will come back home, come back home, home agaiiiiiiin' oh god I can't even think about it. I'm away.

Greenight · 14/10/2022 14:39

Me as a kid: ignores that silly song.

Me as mum to preteen: cries eyes out after a couple of lines.

weebarra · 14/10/2022 14:41

My DCs sang 'Take me home country roads' with alternative lyrics, 'Purple Heather' , 'Caledonia' and One More Step.
Puff would have ended me.

Greenight · 14/10/2022 14:42

Yabu. It’s a song for mums to cry to, not for kids to sing.

Kids do actually like growing up… And this is good…

Was it along the lines of:
'The Animals went in two by two, Hurrah,Hurrah
The Animals went in two by two, Hurrah,Hurrah
The Animals went in two by two, the Elephant and the Kangaroo,
and they all went into the Arc...'
..something like that?

Mumoftwoinprimary · 14/10/2022 15:57

I think that Puff followed quickly by “One more step along the world I go” would be perfect.

Acknowledging the sadness of goodbye before looking excitedly to the future.

MagnaQuestion · 14/10/2022 15:59

Oh gosh "slipping through my fingers " has me every time. As much as its about making parents cry that can be confusing fir the kids. I think its about them and, although we get emotional, should have a positive message.

I love "changing as I grow" one of the local schools did as it has some tear jerking moments but lots of wisdom for them as they go into juniors. Ooh making me teary even thinking of it!

Weeping parents are good at a leavers event, but the song is actually just sad, rather than poignant but hopeful. Also old hat - surely something more modern and uplifting would be more suitable. There are lots of songs that would do, though Reach for the Stars is too cheesy for me and doesn't have the sob factor.
