Doctor won’t prescribe thrush treatment

Loserlacey · 11/10/2022 13:09

As above.
i get it quite often when compared to others. I’ve got it to a point whereby I can control it. However I have got it again.
doctor won’t prescribe it. I must have been about 10 months ago since I was last prescribed.
i Pre pay for my medications and I earn £24k a year.

I always get thrush when on antibiotics. My lovely GP prescribes the treatment at the same time so it’s one trip to the pharmacy. When pregnant, I send my OH to buy it from the pharmacy so they don’t tell me I can’t have it. It’s a nightmare getting an appointment at the GP, and takes ages for the pharmacy to process a prescription

Partymadness · 11/10/2022 16:51

My granny used to be prescribed paracetamol for chronic pain and they stopped that too. It was annoying as you can only buy one small packet at a time which only lasted her a couple of days so all the family added a pack their shop every week

Legally you are allowed to buy up to 100 tablets of paracetamol/ibuprofen etc at one time but it has to be from a pharmacist - in store pharmacy is fine. I buy mine from Tesco .

It's one of the meds they will no longer prescribe because you can buy OTC. The only time I had it prescribed was when I was pregnant. Pharmacist told me the thrush was coming from my womb. Ex partner was frustrated as we couldn't be intimate due to pain. He marched me to the docs to make sure I got what I needed. 😂😂😂

Well that's grim...

Teder · 11/10/2022 16:58

YABU if you haven’t had it for 10 months! Just pay for it. Unless you need a specifically high dose for a certain length of time, why do you need a doctor each time? If it’s such a regular occurrence then I’m surprised you don’t have any sort of action plan. I am immunocompromised and have IV antibiotics multiple times a year. Having a couple of tablets of fluconazole doesn’t help so I have a treatment plan.

Some people don’t take much responsibility for their health. I earn less than you. If you really don’t have a single penny spare ever, then that’s different. A lot of people who demand OTC drugs to be prescribed probably could pull a few quid together every now and then. It’s only once in this year!

OoooohMatron · 11/10/2022 17:01

I think a lot of posters are being very harsh on the OP, now doubt those who have no idea how awful it is to have persistent thrush. I used to get it every month after my period and its horrible. Yes it's considered a minor ailment but there is probably an underlying cause and the GP should be helping the OP with this even if they can't prescribe the treatment. In the meantime OP ask for the generic brand pessary OTC as it's much cheaper than canesten.

Not sure if this will help anyone or not, but here goes.

In my 30s I experienced unremitting thrush. It did not matter what we threw at it over the course of 2.5 years, it just never went away. Repeated tests for diabetes, all negative. I even followed a restricted diet (no yeast, no sugar) based on an expert book - you'd be surprised what foodstuffs contain yeast, btw!

I was at the Gynaecologist for another matter, and a wee Indian nurse was taking my history. I mentioned how debilitated I was due to unremitting thrush.
She recommended a specific product. It cleared my thrush within a couple of weeks and I was thrush-free for months on end. When I went to purchase more, it had been discontinued. I was devastated and began searching for an equivalent - even spoke with my GP (when I was there on another matter) who said yes it had been discontinued and there was no recommended alternative!

Eventually I found what I use now as a preventative and I have now not had thrush for decades.

Not everyone will respond the same to medications but if you are desperate and can afford it, there would be no harm in trying: Multi-Gyn Acti-Gel.

For me, it has been a sanity-saver because thrush was for me an absolutely debilitating and depressing condition.

Good luck everyone in finding a solution (or gel, or cream, or tablet) that works for you!

stepfordwifey · 11/10/2022 17:12

I'll second this. Have used them several times.

JulietDorney · 11/10/2022 17:12

Apart from the cost to the NHS for something so minor, why are you wasting your Dr's time with something so trivial?

Did you get an appt or e-consult just for this?

Just buy the treatment - Amazon, local pharmacies, everyone sells it.

UnderCoverFieldAgent · 11/10/2022 17:13

Go and buy it you cheapskate!

Noteverybodylives · 11/10/2022 17:14

I personally would be buying it over the counter, it takes weeks to see a gp usually.

But I would be going to the gp or asking to be referred to try and get to the bottom of it.

This is not normal and not something you should have to just live with.

EveningOverRooftops · 11/10/2022 17:17

PeloFondo · 11/10/2022 14:16

It would be interesting to know actually why they've gone up so much
This is the exact product I got last year, and paid £7.99 for, it was dead easy to get one online all similar prices
Now the generic ones are either this much or not available Confused

There is a shortage of medications.

They’re not gone but supplies are low. Lots of medications are affected and it does depend on where they’re being made.

I had a lot of trouble a couple of months back trying to get ibuprophen in caplet and childrens liquid form, antifungal and some prescription medications took a long time to become available.

im also wondering if the rise in fuel costs has an impact as most creams use parafin a by product of oil 🤔

🤦‍♀️

Exactly what I and many others are thinking about you.

Bloody glucose pills. It’s a joke.

TwinkleChristmas · 11/10/2022 17:21

Loserlacey · 11/10/2022 15:49

For £15 and I need more than one treatment.

You can get it loads cheaper then £15. Stop wasting the GP time.

Discovereads · 11/10/2022 17:24

Darcy101 · 11/10/2022 13:57

Btw you can’t buy it over the counter if you’re over 60, only found this out this year

WTF! I’m not quite 60 yet…and I hardly ever get thrust….but why? Do they think our fanny shrivels up into nothing past a certain age?

Discovereads · 11/10/2022 17:25

Not a joke , the most effective treatment for my hypos - and luckily for me my gp had some compassion and knows my circumstances are difficult and agreed to prescribe.
It’s sad that people can begrudge others medical treatment

WhackingPhoenix · 11/10/2022 17:28

I buy it online for a couple of quid per tablet (only take the tablet if you are not pregnant or TTC), but sexual health services will treat thrush for free. Worth a visit, especially if you suffer with recurrent thrush as it may be that you have thrush that is resistant to fluconazole or clotrimazole. We would take cultures and ask for it to be tested for sensitivities.

Also have a look at what you’re washing with: you shouldn’t be using anything other than plain water, an emollient wash or something unperfumed like Sanex Zero.

Who the hell are you to decide what is worthy of GPs time?

Exactly !!! Go surgeries triage appointment requests etc ! So if there’s an issue the issue is with that system but some posters seem to think it’s their place to decide who deserves what from the nhs

You complained twice to the practice manager, they were probably sick to death of you and done it to shut you up. Honestly some people think they should be given everything for free and this is why the NHS is where its at now

Loserlacey · 11/10/2022 19:06

Please tell me where it’s cheaper than £15? I also need it more than once.
cream for outside and internal

Where? I need the cream and either pessary or internal cream.
also if you can find it cheaper orally, please do.
but really I need 4 days of treatment.

Its due to a series of health issues.

If you read through the posts someone has posted links where you can get 3 x creams 3 x tablets for £9

FTHC · 11/10/2022 19:18

GimmeSleep · 11/10/2022 14:43

Or buy it combined and it's still slightly cheaper than a script would be (I know, I know you have a PPC)
