Loserlacey · 11/10/2022 13:09

As above.
i get it quite often when compared to others. I’ve got it to a point whereby I can control it. However I have got it again.
doctor won’t prescribe it. I must have been about 10 months ago since I was last prescribed.
i Pre pay for my medications and I earn £24k a year.

Are you really keen on the old fashioned approach or something? Why not try natural yoghurt as well while you're at it!

Something wrong with using one fluconazole tablet? Too easy and not enough messing around? Too cheap? Too simple?

Doesn't always work (I need a course), not always easy when the pharmacist wants you to see a GP first, not exactly cheap from a pharmacy (yes I know you can get them online).

Doingmybest12 · 13/10/2022 07:53

Had this is the Summer, thought it was great to walk into the chemist and buy non branded version of what I needed , cheaper than a prescription and no hassle.

It's amazing how many people think they are doctors. It's like mumsnet has turned into one large GP's receptionist. I'm sure doctors would prefer to see someone with persistent thrush as there are all kinds of things they like to check out in relation to it. If this is the shape of things to come, we will scupper our own health ignorantly triaging each other.

This comment made me literally laugh out loud😂
It’s true-Mumsnet is just like a bossy GP receptionist’s desk these days.
”Don’t bother the doctor with your minor ailments - get thee to a pharmacy “

Also those who ask “ Should I go to A&E?”
Or who ask about pet health.
Everyone suddenly has Medical or Veterinary degrees with decades of experience 🤔

If you know you can get them online then why wouldn't you? It's like a conversation with my grandparents ten years ago. Even they have managed to get their heads around online deliveries these days.
Pack of three for a couple of quid.

Top tip - while in a thinking ahead frame of mind you could also order antihistamines (instead of waiting til the summer) flu relief (instead of waiting til you actually have flu) antiseptic cream (instead of waiting til you have an infected cut) antibiotic cream (instead of waiting til that infected cut gets even worse) steroid cream (just in case) and steroid antifungal cream (really just in case)

Then put it in a box.
Tada. It's called a medicine box, or a first aid kit.
You could add other stuff, like calpol for the kids, plasters, heat packs.

They must not teach this stuff at brownies any more

LunaLoveLemon · 13/10/2022 09:07

Thanks to this thread I’m going to stock up on some emergency cheap fluconazole now 👍

Can I just add for anyone reading this thread that if you are pregnant and have thrush, cream and pessaries OTC are safe BUT if it persists you do need to see a GP for a week long course of pessaries and be quite firm about it if they try to prescribe you a single dose. (Midwife here, it’s a real bugger to get rid of in pregnancy)

Floydthebarber · 13/10/2022 09:11

I had persistent thrush after bot dc. My gp prescribed two tablets, taken7 days apart and that did work. It was a while ago when GP appts were simple to get, and I was breastfeeding which isn't recommended with thrush medicine. It was the only thing that sorted it though.

I couldn't use the pessaries as my vagina was so dry they wouldn't dissolve! Blush A gp did say it was the worst case of thrush she had seen!

Why not? It’s going to cost me £30 min to get rid of my itchy vagina….. vastly overpriced

Anyone else confused as to why the OP can't read all the posts telling her where she can get it online for a couple of quid 🙄

You can lead a horse to water and all that

She just wants to use her pre-payment certificate and has fingers in ears lalala about any other option.

Or she is too young to have a debit card

Or she only believes in using the internet for chat not buying stuff as that is the Devil's work

gamerchick · 13/10/2022 09:50

Just entitled. It's never cost me 30 quid to get rid of thrush anyroad.

www.pharmacyfirst.co.uk/sexual-health-wellbeing/feminine-care/thrush.html#isPage=1

£1.09 for fluconazole and £1.95 for 20g cream, or £4.99 for 100g

This one is free delivery for the fluconazole:

www.pharmacyfirst.co.uk/offers/free-delivery/3-x-fluconazole-generic-canesten-150mg-1-capsule-thrush-treatmen.html

I can't see a free delivery option for the clotrimazole on that site unfortunately, but they do cycle round what is on free delivery.

However, if you get recurrent thrush - has a GP done tests to check it's not BV? And also have they tried a longer term treatment where you e.g. take 50mg every day for a week, or do a multi week course? Those aren't available OTC and you may need to move to these second line treatments if you get thrush all the time.

Augend23 · 13/10/2022 10:57

And I guess I don't view buying ahead as wasting money as it means I can get the best prices. If you do buy the 3 and the 5 then the total cost would be £12.50 which is less than two prescription items assuming you pay for your prescriptions.

I have a prescription prepayment certificate and was able to get a GP to put fluconazole on repeat for me to order when needed but it was a couple of years ago now and they didn't put it back on when I move surgery.

i need multiple days of treatment… pharmacy can’t give.

Because when something raises it's head, it's handy to have the shit in to treat it immediately. It's common sense stuff.

Like threadworm treatment, you don't usually notice it until all the shops are shut.

cravattwat · 13/10/2022 13:45

I've had recurring thrush too, it's a nightmare.

Just to add a note of caution that thrush treatment is actually quite difficult to buy regularly and the prices vary massively.
I can get it for £3 from one pharmacy really out of my way or for £11/12 at Boots nearby.

I tried to order twice from the same pharmacy and my order was cancelled with an instruction to see my GP.

I also had big push back from the pharmacy where I get my regular prescriptions and again was told to go to my GP. They won't sell it to me again without a prescription.

So the OP is going to have to mess around to get regular treatment if needed and pay more than the prescription cost for something the GP should be helping her manage.

cravattwat · 13/10/2022 13:45

I'm referring to the tablet btw which is the most effective treatment.

Quisquam · 13/10/2022 13:55

Canesten duo, so that's oral capsule and cream £10 from super drug.

DD works in a pharmacy. She tells me they only sell the brand name, about once every 6 months; because everyone else buys the generic, as they are much cheaper.
