Loserlacey · 11/10/2022 13:09

As above.
i get it quite often when compared to others. I’ve got it to a point whereby I can control it. However I have got it again.
doctor won’t prescribe it. I must have been about 10 months ago since I was last prescribed.
i Pre pay for my medications and I earn £24k a year.

The NHS considers is recurring when it’s 4 times in 12 months. The OP says she hasn’t had it for at least 10 months.

So you need to find out whats causing it and work with it, not rely on underfunded nh for thrush cream!

That's a medical issue. A doctor needs to have a look, take a swab, work through possibilities, refer if necessary.

We're not falling into a world where it's socially unacceptable to go to the doctor for medical issues.

Agree . Seems like if mn ran the nhs I’d be expected to risk hypos and be in severe discomfort from untreated thrush and just put up with it 😞

I have read enough threads on here over the years to see that even just a change of soap or in fact using soap can cause thrush. Thats what I mean, She needs to work out what is causing it then stop doing it rather than running to the gp for a free prescription.

Ideally it would only cost you/your health insurance company more.

I can't be bothered funding this nonsense any more.

People refuse to take any responsibility for paying for anything when they can get their glucose tablets and thrush cream etc 'for free'. No wonder the NHS is dying. I can't even be bothered defending it when I read some threads on mumsnet.

Maybe it’s just coming from a place of ignorance that you don’t realise many of us don’t have any money - once I’ve paid my bills and fed my dc there are often a few days at a time when I have zero in my account !!! If I have thrush then or hypos I can’t just buy the things I need !!!

AmadeusBreathingWater · 11/10/2022 14:39

can’t believe it even occurred to you to waste a GP appointment over this, never mind actually doing it

Nope not a doctor, just a pissed of person who has not been able to get a doctors appointment for over a year then come on here and read this bollocks and understand why!

In my case it’s underlying type 1 making me more prone to it - I can’t change that. I’m also run down and anaemic from heavy periods and that also doesn’t help. I sometimes don’t eat as well or as much as I should because I put the dc first - what else can I do

If this was as simple as changing to a different soap I would have done

ATwirlADay · 11/10/2022 13:14

If it costs you £12 to buy but the NHS are paying £20 for it, then of course you should buy it yourself. (I have no idea of actual figures).

My granny used to be prescribed paracetamol for chronic pain and they stopped that too. It was annoying as you can only buy one small packet at a time which only lasted her a couple of days so all the family added a pack their shop every week!

Don't be unfair.

The OP pre-pays for their prescriptions anyway, has a modest-wage, is paying their taxes, if it saves her a few quid then who are we to judge!

The NHS is NOT a charity, we pay our taxes into it. That few £ difference likely means more to OP!

I had this issue , and also for another item (glucose tablets)

I had to complain to the practice manager twice and go in for an apt with her and gp and they finally agreed I could have thrush treatment and glucose on my repeat list

People like you are part of the reason the NHS is on its knees, so entitled!

Don’t be ridiculous. I’m diabetic and I treat hypos with 40p jelly babies (for a big bag). If I couldn’t afford that I’d buy a kg of sugar for 70p. 3 teaspoons is 15g of carbs, it’d last forever. I wouldn’t dream of asking for prescription glucose

Quincythequince · 11/10/2022 14:42

Ok, but OP getting thrush isn’t the reason you can’t get an appointment is it.

Should other people with perceived minor ailments (in your view) also not go and see their GP because you can’t get an appointment?

GimmeSleep · 11/10/2022 14:43

Or buy it combined and it's still slightly cheaper than a script would be (I know, I know you have a PPC)

Maybe you need to take this up with your gp surgery instead of blaming others - if the service isn’t up to scratch it’s not another patients fault - is the triage system at your surgery in some way ‘faulty’ in that they won’t offer you an appt when you need one ?

You should complain - if everyone does then they will have to improve but instead I imagine they prefer us to fight each other over it rather than hold them accountable

Sweets don’t work quickly enough for me I need the glucose tablet or glucojuice

DiddlyDoris · 11/10/2022 14:45

For those moaning at others getting things on prescription - even though they are paying as you might be able to get marginally cheaper elsewhere.. I hope you didn't use any maternity exemption when pregnant for any medications or dental treatment and carried on as before!

Quincythequince · 11/10/2022 14:45

If OP is a diabetic and gets thrush regularly, she should be seeing her GP to have his documented and monitored, alongside other things.

You can of course buy your own pills and you should certainly not be asking for a script for sugar for a hypo.

Are you poorly controlled?

whataflower · 11/10/2022 14:46

Anyway , I don’t want to derail OP thread. It’s obvious there’s a real issue with free prescriptions here . Those in most need are begrudged what they need

Ever seen someone have a hypo?
Or a bad hypo?
Thought not!

The ignorance on here is astounding

PinkDaffodil2 · 11/10/2022 14:48

A lot of the cost of this sort of thing is the GP / surgery time when there’s no medical reason for a doctor to be involved.
People entitled to free prescriptions (so not the OP but some others on this thread) May be able to use pharmacy first or a similar scheme to get free OTC products without using a doctors time.

probably quicker than going via GP too

it’s as easy as filling a small bottle in advance. your excuses are just that- excuses. Do you have any idea how much a prescription costs the nhs to administer? Or do you just not give a shit as long as you get whatever you want for free?
