As above.
i get it quite often when compared to others. I’ve got it to a point whereby I can control it. However I have got it again.
doctor won’t prescribe it. I must have been about 10 months ago since I was last prescribed.
i Pre pay for my medications and I earn £24k a year.

@ZeroFuchsGiven but it's not £3
The pessary prices have gone up massively, the cream treats the itch but not internally and the oral ones don't work for me
Every time I get antibiotics I get thrush. And sometimes need 2 pessaries. That's £20 - yes I can afford that but not everyone can

BigWoollyJumpers · 11/10/2022 14:13

I've just found a generic for £1.50 on-online. Less than a coffee.

ffsnotagainandagain · 11/10/2022 14:13

Really thrush cream from your GP? I have free prescriptions due to a medical condition. But things like thrush cream, paracetamol etc.... I buy myself because the NHS is on it's knees. It must be easier to walk into a pharmacy and buy something rather than get it from your GP.

Whitepouringglue · 11/10/2022 14:14

Struggling to read again? It's recurring. It's like you have a bias of some sort.

You didnt explain the situation, you formally complained twice. Maybe you need to budget for those things, I dont mean to sound harsh and I have been the skintest of skint in my time BUT the nhs is not there for this sort of stuff.

It will be costing them a lot more than a £3 cream and a packet of sweets you complaining and blocking appointments up with this nonsense.

Because they initially refused - im not going to just accept that am I !!! I need to be well to look after my children and rationing my glucose and being in agony with thrush was unbearable. As for budgeting - I do and that’s how I am managing to keep my electric on and feed my children that’s my priority

Yes, just buying it can't be that bad if this is a once every 10 months kind of thing. Ask the chemist for an unbranded version of the cream or whatever.

Pharmacist suggested this last time I bought it. £4 instead of £12.

PeloFondo · 11/10/2022 14:16

It would be interesting to know actually why they've gone up so much
This is the exact product I got last year, and paid £7.99 for, it was dead easy to get one online all similar prices
Now the generic ones are either this much or not available Confused

I explained in my initial request for it which was rejected then I took it further

I had this issue , and also for another item (glucose tablets)

I had to complain to the practice manager twice and go in for an apt with her and gp and they finally agreed I could have thrush treatment and glucose on my repeat list

ridiculous!

ancientgran · 11/10/2022 14:20

Darcy101 · 11/10/2022 13:57

Btw you can’t buy it over the counter if you’re over 60, only found this out this year

Really? I've bought it within the last year and I'm 69. Maybe I just look so young and glamorous that they didn't think to ask. I wish.

TwinkleChristmas · 11/10/2022 14:21

OP just buy it over the counter and don’t waste the GPs time.

Darcy101 · 11/10/2022 14:21

I did the same, sent my daughter back up there, I knew why I had thrush, I always have done if taken antibiotics.

schloop · 11/10/2022 14:21

I buy it on Amazon. Gets delivered in 24hrs.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 11/10/2022 14:22

I get my thrush treatment on prescription because its the 10%last cream that cannot be bought over the counter.

Darkstar4855 · 11/10/2022 14:27

NHS advice is not to prescribe stuff that you can buy from a pharmacy due the cost of the appointment, prescribing time, pharmacy processing and dispensing. YABU to expect thrush cream on prescription. It would be nice but the more time and money spent on that sort of stuff, the less left over for people with more serious problems.

mummydoris2006 · 11/10/2022 14:29

@Loserlacey is there a part missing from you OP? The last part states your annual income but doesn't seem to have any relevance to what you're asking so just wondering if it cut you off before you'd finished posting!

I'm diabetic so get free prescriptions but buy clotrimazole cream and fluconazole capsules online. It costs less than a tenner for 3 of each, so in effect enough meds for 3 separate flare ups. If you go on any online pharmacy they all cost about the same and can arrive the next working day.

It’s often the little problems going untreated that lead to the big problems

Topgub · 11/10/2022 14:30

Recurrent thrush shouldn't be treated with clotrimazole anyway.

You need to find out why its recurrent and treat that.

mummydoris2006 · 11/10/2022 14:31

TwinkleChristmas · 11/10/2022 14:20

@TwinkleChristmas absolutely second this sentiment!

All that wasted time and resources when the NHS is already on it's knees 😥

So you need to find out whats causing it and work with it, not rely on underfunded nh for thrush cream!

I’m my case it’s diabetes not much I can do about that !!

pretty sure if I ran out of glucose due to not being able to afford it and had a severe hypo and needed to go to hospital an a and E admission would cost the nhs more !

likewise my thrush - it gets severe - I’ve been seen by a gynae and they said it’s again due to being diabetic I’m more prone - a repeat referral would cost more - this is what I put to the practice manager and gp who agreed and prescribed

The cream treats the infection, it’s anti-fungal cream. The infection isn’t “inside” it’s a fungal infection like athletes foot so treating it topically is fine.

Whitepouringglue · 11/10/2022 14:35

That's a medical issue. A doctor needs to have a look, take a swab, work through possibilities, refer if necessary.

We're not falling into a world where it's socially unacceptable to go to the doctor for medical issues.

Ideally it would only cost you/your health insurance company more.

I can't be bothered funding this nonsense any more.

People refuse to take any responsibility for paying for anything when they can get their glucose tablets and thrush cream etc 'for free'. No wonder the NHS is dying. I can't even be bothered defending it when I read some threads on mumsnet.

Quincythequince · 11/10/2022 14:37

Chronic heavy thrush requires twice weekly fluconazole pills for about four weeks to clear it up, and then you need to take one weekly thereafter forevermore to keep it at bay.

It’s rare to have thrush this bad but this is how you treat it.

Have you been properly checked to make sure that that’s what you have and that there is nothing else going on?
