We all need to consume less, and reuse & pass on more.

This year so many retailers have cottoned on that personalising items reduces our ability to pass them on to other children.

Don't do it! That Christmas jumper can be passed on to your niece, nephew, younger child, neighbours child, but Annabel isn't going to want it if its got Ethan embroidered or printed on very obviously.

Overtly gendered and personalised items are retailer strategies to reduce our ability to re-use and push us to buy more.

Lets all try not to.

I'm in the minority here but I do think YABU - not necessarily with the message itself in terms of reducing waste etc, but with the fact you're asking people to consider how they spend their own money. If you don't want to buy personalised items for your own family and friends, that's ok, but some people will want to and they shouldn't be made to feel guilty that someone else might not get to use the item later. Personally I'm not a huge fan of personalised clothes etc, but I don't think people should be dictating how strangers spend their money.

Was there ever anything more tacky than personalisation. Companies duping the poor and the dim as usual.

Well, you sound lovely.

Well I have just bought 4 personalised Christmas Stockings for my godchildren who are spending Christmas with us for the 1st time. They are personalised because I expect they will keep them for themselves - not really something you would pass on and, I'm sorry, I won't be made to feel guilt because of this because I don't. Sorry OP

Good for you and enjoy!

Primary school jumpers with initials , great idea for identifying easily but can't be passed on to anyone else. I stopped doing it in y4 and handed them over (basically brand new hardly worn) to a friend who struggles.

I always worry for their safety. They've got their name written clearly on them, if someone has bad intentions they've got a way to gain their trust. Hate it.

Agree with it but let's not stop writing names in school clothes!! Teacher here and it is incredibly frustrating when they don't have a name in.
