To never let her have the flu vaccine ever again?

DD2 had the flu vaccine yesterday, was fine in herself but refused to nap and slept about 2 hours last night. This morning woke up snotty with a cough and hasn't stopped crying most of the day. Still hasn't had her nap and again not sleeping tonight, I've given calpol but she's still crying at me and refusing point blank to go to sleep, I've tried cuddles, stories, her bed, my bed and nothing. She's so tired but just lying there awake, I'm at a total loss of what to do, I'm so tired.

AIBU to never agree to her having the vaccine ever again

Then again I'm sure if she did have flu it would be 10 times worse 😭

This is me nearly every time I’ve had it. I’ve never had the flu so I’ll take my chances. I work heavy manual jobs and an active life and can’t really be bedded after every flu jag

thaegumathteth · 10/10/2022 01:48

I don't know if you're just kind of joking but when I was having my youngest I was overwhelmed with pregnancy / birth/ newborn and I forgot to get my 3 year old his flu vaccine.

He ended up spending Xmas day in hospital with double pneumonia. It was absolutely terrifying.

Nat6999 · 10/10/2022 01:53

I refuse the vaccine for myself every year now as when I have had it previously I could guarantee that I would end up with a chest infection that took multiple courses of antibiotics & steroids to clear up. If I don't get vaccinated I don't even get a cold

Keha · 11/10/2022 18:13

OP, my little girl had hers on Saturday and I'm laid her with her tonight several days later and she still has a fever, doesn't want to eat, is miserable, complaining her head hurts etc. Given her Calpol and she has just fallen asleep. I'm going to speak to the GP tomorrow because I think several days of illness is more than a mild side effect. Possibly she's just got ill at the same time but it seems a huge coincidence and noone else in the family is ill or anyone we've seen (and she doesn't go to nursery). Im a strong believer in vaccines but I may ask about the injection next time.

CredibilityProblem · 11/10/2022 18:30

Why are some posters insisting that when a child suffers common and well known side-effects of a vaccine immediately after getting the vaccine it must be a coincidence because she's happened to get a virus producing similar effects at the same time? Of course it might be a coincidence - nasty colds are hardly rare, but that's not the most likely explanation.

The most ill I've ever felt was after a childhood flu jab and my first Covid jab (I realise this makes me lucky). You weigh up the near certainty of feeling crap for up to 24 hours after the jab against the lower probability of being quite seriously ill with the virus if you don't have the jab. I didn't always think the benefit was worth the cost for the flu jab as a young adult but for a tiny child I would.

This is exactly the same as me, I'm very pro vaccines but this has made me question the flu vaccine.
My little girls the same, high temp, barking cough, lethargic and so congested, today has been her worse day so far.
I was speaking to the childminder this morning and a little girl she looks after who's my DDs age had hers too on Saturday, she had symptoms the same as my little girl but they got worse and she ended up on hospital yesterday with breathing difficulties. Surely it can't all be a coincidence

@CredibilityProblem this is the issue, I feel so sad today and guilty like I've caused her to be unwell by taking her to get the vaccine. Then I think maybe she was brewing something, then I start thinking well everyone I have spoken to that's had it this year has been unwell, then I think but what if she didn't have it and she gets flu....

Young children do not need the flu jab, it is only given to children to provide herd immunity for the elderly

cptartapp · 11/10/2022 19:01

^ this.
I never gave consent for mine to have the fluenz and I'm a practice nurse.
It didn't sit right with me to vaccinate healthy children en masse mostly (and excluding vulnerable children) to protect the elderly - very many thousands of whom I see year on year refusing to have it themselves.

Sapphire387 · 11/10/2022 19:04

My GP told me that children with no underlying health issues don't need the vaccine - it's done for herd immunity to protect the vulnerable.

I am not anti-vax in general but it doesn't sit comfortably with me to give my children a vaccination every year for that reason.

Was it the nasal one? If so consider calling GP and letting them know the reaction and symptoms. They may be able to offer the flu jab instead next year.

What reaction?

3WildOnes · 11/10/2022 19:06

I'm not sure why everyone is saying having the flu would be worse. It might be. It lt might not be. The flu is the same as Covid in that you can be asymptomatic or just have a very mild case, in fact most cases of the flu are asymptomatic or mild.

The flu makes children very poorly. Covid does not.
I have nursed many children with flu and they are poorly with it trust me

It sometimes makes children very poorly but most children will be fine. A third of flu cases are asymptomatic and more are mild.

AloysiusBear · 11/10/2022 19:27

My daughter always gets quite ill with the nasal spray vaccine. My GP allowed her the jab last year instead which was better. if they refuse this year i'll pay for it privately.

AloysiusBear · 11/10/2022 19:29

Also they know full well that the nasal spray makes a lot of kids ill - they don't give it to children with asthma.

littlepeas · 11/10/2022 19:35

My dd (now 12) doesn't have it. She finds the nasal spray very distressing and would far prefer a jab...she has had her covid vaccines and all childhood vaccines and my two sons have the flu vaccine every year it has been offered to them, so we are not anti vax in the slightest.

Kids don't have it to protect themselves, it is to stop them spreading it to others. The distress of having the vaccine is far more significant than any benefit to her.

Creameggs223 · 11/10/2022 19:52

My dd was awful after having her first flu spray raging temp, terrible cough, very tired just not herself for a few days like you I vowed never again but she got it a year later me being more prepared for the side affects and she was fine and fine again when she had it last week so next time she may not be as bad.

Gherkingreen · 11/10/2022 19:57

I didn't have a flu jab until one year as an adult I developed flu that turned into pneumonia, followed by a week in hospital and two months + to recover enough to return to work. Flu isn't to be trifled with, even for the young and healthy.

That’s not quite correct, it’s not advised in children with severe asthma who have been to intensive care. Most children with asthma are fine to have it

Or who have certain allergies

Chattycathydoll · 11/10/2022 19:58

Could be a coincidence but definitely still worth getting the vaccine. I had flu as a child- proper flu, not just a bad cold- was so unwell, I was delirious and hallucinating. I can’t imagine going through that with DD, it was bad enough when she had chicken pox and reverted to newborn behaviour, sleeping and crying all day.

PinkPlantCase · 11/10/2022 20:10

I’m another one who doesn’t use the flu vaccine for me or my DC unless there’s extra risk factors at play. We’ve had all the other vaccines I just don’t think the benefits of the flu one out weigh the risks for young, healthy people.

Scoobz81 · 11/10/2022 20:39

OP, this was my DD last year. She will not be having the nasal spray again!
My DD was never ill prior to it and I don't think it was coincidence.

She had a fever, raging cough and vomiting within days of her first nasal spray. She developed a bad chest infection, had two rounds of antibiotics and was still poorly. The GP sent us to hospital after the 2nd lot, where she had chest x-rays etc. Another round of (different) antibiotics from the hospital finally cleared it up but her chest hasn't been the same since.
Hope your dd is feeling better soon.

flapjackfairy · 11/10/2022 20:49

I have a child with complex needs and he only had the drops once as he ended up in hospital with 2 strains of flu both of which were in the vacine he had been given only a week before.
The doctors said it was coincidence but the drops are a live vacine whereas the injection isnt so we get him the jab every year rather than risk it but we do get him vacinated as any cold or flu virus can be life threatening and we have not had any issues with the jab at all.
