To think I could get away with wearing an Alice and at 30?

I've come across an Alice band that I wore years ago and have been reminiscing about how much I used to enjoy wearing it! I'm 30 now and worrying that I'm a bit old for one. I have long quite thick brown hair and if I'm being honest I don't have the prettiest face in the world. Aibu to think I might get away with wearing one

I’m on my way to the office in a big corporate in the City wearing one. It’s plain black and is dressing up my outfit a bit. Go for it!

Numbat2022 · 10/10/2022 07:27

I'm 40 and wear one often when I have my hair down. They're practical for keeping my hair out if my face and I think it suits me. Both of mine have a knot in the middle, which looks better on me than the flat ones.

They're everywhere in the shops, so anyone saying they're unfashionable is clearly behind the times.

Spidey66 · 10/10/2022 07:28

I used one when I had Lockdown Hair and couldn't get it cut. I think they're fine.

Spidey66 · 10/10/2022 07:28

Ps I'm 56

Greendoorsaremyfavourite · 10/10/2022 07:30

I'm 38 & wear them! If you like it, just do it.

SallyWD · 10/10/2022 07:30

I've seen women in their 50s and 60s wear them! Go for it.

SunshineAndSummer · 10/10/2022 07:39

Who gives two craps what others think, if you think it looks cute wear it :)

CountryCousin · 10/10/2022 07:47

What is there to get away with? Why would anyone try to prevent you from wearing a fashionable item on your own head? And headbands can look lovely at any age.

I’m 42 and I wear alice bands every now and then. In fact, I’m now going to wear one today 😂

AuntieStella · 10/10/2022 07:52

Ditching ageist stereotypes will help you in both in choosing clothes and in life in general.

It's whether you like how you look when you see yourself in a mirror that determines whether you wear something. Not the number of candles on your last cake

BiscuitLover3678 · 10/10/2022 07:52

I’m in my 30s and wear them all the time. I had no idea there was a time limit for nice things - especially when you’re in your 30s. So young! Crazy.

dottiedodah · 10/10/2022 07:55

Wear what you want i say! You are still young at 30 anyway.

petridishmystery · 10/10/2022 07:55

Good Christ, you’re only 30!!!!

anyway joining the crowd to say yes, wear it. I’m 35 and don’t wear them much atm but I had a craze a few years ago and always got lots of compliments. Think I’ll start wearing them more again now you’ve reminded me.

FourChimneys · 10/10/2022 07:57

I know someone who is about 60 and I don't think I've ever seen her without an Alice band. It's her "look", along with long plaits.

They are very practical for keeping hair out of your eyes on windy days outdoors when it's too warm for a hat. I keep one in my rucksack for that very purpose.

CherryogDog · 10/10/2022 08:01

I'm 59 and always wear a headband because I'm growing my fringe out. Usually a wide Hygge type but sometimes a
narrower one.

ThreeblackCats · 10/10/2022 08:01

I’ve seen the comedian Katherine Ryan wearing one, a big padded velvet one with pearls on it. Makes her look very regal, always reminds me of a Tudor queen.

There’s no age limit in clothes, wear what suits you. I’m 60, I still wear bikinis, leather trousers, and stripper heels, although not all at the same time. One of the joys of growing up is not giving a shit what other people think of me.

Wear that band and own it, or don’t bother, it’s your life.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 10/10/2022 08:02

I follow loads of style and beauty stuff on tik tok and YouTube - Alice bands are completely fine, in fact having a bit of a moment so I'd say go for it! If you care about being on trend anyway, and if not then just wear it without a second thought. Also the people I follow are around 25-35 so definitely not school age.

FridayTheThirteeth · 10/10/2022 08:10

'Get away with it' are you expecting to be arrested or something similar?

IaltagDhubh · 10/10/2022 08:11

30 isn’t old, but it can be a tricky age, style wise. You’re past your teens and twenties where you feel most comfortable/confident in high street fashion, but haven’t quite reached the “fuck it, I’ll wear what I like and stuff what anyone else thinks” stage that hits around 40. Also your likely to be running around after small children so practicality is important. I found my late 20s and early 30s to be when I felt really frumpy (sorry, hate that word, but it fitted at the time) and a bit lost.

Op, embrace the fuck it and wear what you like. Unless you also wear glasses - in which case, Alice band plus glasses will just hurt.

Ihavenoideatoday · 10/10/2022 08:14

Thanks everyone! I think it's one of those things that was really popular when I was at school and I wondered if it would just look dated now! I used to wear it to push my hair behind my ears but I think it makes me look younger than I am so will stick with putting my hair to the side and then the Alice band over it!

71 here. Started wearing an Alice band during lockdown when you couldn't go to the hairdresser. Mine's a simple tortoiseshell one - don't think the fancy ones would look right on an older person.

DillDanding · 09/10/2022 23:23

If you like it, wear it.

if you’re into fashion, don’t wear it 😂

RuthW · 10/10/2022 12:05

I'm 54 and occasionally wear a thin one

MaisyMary77 · 10/10/2022 12:52

I wear one. My DD1 is 30 and always wears one. I got her one from Liberty for her birthday; very beautiful!
