A question for people who write 'alot'

Devilledmeg · 08/10/2022 15:19

Do you think 'alot' is how you're meant to spell it and whenever you see 'a lot' you think it's spelt wrong? Or do you know it's incorrect and just prefer to spell it like that?

Genuinely baffled as whenever I see words on here repeatedly spelt differently I look it up to check I haven't spelt it incorrectly all my life 😁

A lot of people are answering a different question to the one I posed and getting worked up with unnecessary indignation.

I haven't said anyone is stupid, I haven't said I sit at home and get wound up about it. Instead I'm trying to understand more from those who misspell it about why. Yes I know dyslexia is a thing but it's this word in particular that seems to be misspelt the most even though people will have also seen it spelt correctly the most!

The point on particular words increasing in how they are spelt incorrectly (potentially to social media) was interesting. I also didn't know about alright!

Your sentence structure is awful - do you know and don’t care? Or do you not know?

lightisnotwhite · 08/10/2022 17:09

I think alot makes sense as a separate word for a large amount of something. Then you can carry on and use “a lot” for describing a noun like a auction lot or parking lot or as in “ that lot” to describe people.

I’m a SPAG champion and I couldn’t get up worked about this.

Good for you! Do you feel better now you have told us all you're a SPAG champion? Woo hoo! 👯 🙌

Many people who spell incorrectly don't realise because they don't read a lot. I'm not criticising or judging, some people just don't read much in the way of books and newspapers. They may well read stuff on social media where, guess what, lots of other people are writing "alot" and "chest of draws" so subconsciously it affirms that the spelling is correct/acceptable.

Someone posted a driving thread on here a couple of years ago talking about having the "rightaway". She was genuinely surprised to be told it was "right of way" as she couldn't recall ever seeing it written down in context. Presumably she passed her test before a theory exam was required.

"Alot" is a funny one though because it is actually a proper word, although it is spelt "allot" and means something different (portioning or sharing something out) such may compound the confusion.

But if you've started this thread to inspire the alot-ers to mend their ways they probably won't click on it, because they don't really care. Twas ever thus.

Oh for heaven's sake, there's nothing wrong about knowing your strengths and highlighting them when they are relevant - and humorously so, to boot.
Knock the chip off your shoulder.

queenMab99 · 08/10/2022 17:17

I just assume it's a typo, and the space has been missed. It isn't spelling mistake it's just sometimes people typing fast on a phone miss out the space.

I mean if into can be one word why can't alot be one word?

No, it’s not.

WonderingWanda · 08/10/2022 17:22

I say a lot when I am speaking but I don't think I would write a lot, and I definitely wouldn't spell it alot. My brain wants to change the sentence to say lots of when I'm writing.

Derbee · 08/10/2022 17:36

@Pumperthepumper think about the rest of the sentence. Do you don’t care is incorrect.

Do you know?
Do you not know?
Do you care?
Do you not care?

Do you know and not care?
Do you not know and not care?
Do you care, but not know?
Do you not care, and not know?

Derbee · 08/10/2022 17:37

Do you don’t care?

That will never read correctly

Eeksteek · 08/10/2022 17:41

In the grand scheme of things, I think alot is more forgivable than many things. After all, we have ashamed and alright. I think most people just don’t notice, or care if they do. Only people who think their way is the correct way are bothered (I’m one of them, but I try not to be a dick and point it out. It’s not fair). If you know your spelling is a bit ropey, and don’t value grammatical correctness for the sake of it, why would it bother you if others spell it differently?

Pumperthepumper · 08/10/2022 17:43

Derbee · 08/10/2022 17:37

No, it’s not ‘a are’.

ancientgran · 08/10/2022 17:44

I know how to spell it and sometimes my right hand just decides to do the L before the space bar and I can't be bothered to change it. I think it is because I have arthritis in my right thumb, index and middle fingers but the L is the ring finger so it moves faster.

Derbee · 08/10/2022 17:46

Pumperthepumper · 08/10/2022 17:43

No, it’s not ‘a are’.

I think you should stop arguing a point that you are incorrect about, personally.

Bingo. You spot the differences, I don't. I remember my English teacher dispairing because I had spelt "definitely" with 3 different, incorrect spellings in the same essay (if it is correct here blame my spellchecker).

*despairing

No, I’m correct about that. It’s definitely not ‘a are’.

Topgub · 08/10/2022 17:52

For the absence of doubt by regional thing I meant the incorrect use of

I know bought and brought and draw and drawer are different words.

But its definitely regional in that only certain areas of England appear to use them wrongly.

No one in Scotland (for example) would mix them up.

As I said, presumably because of accents and how they are pronounced

The same as should of and should've sound the same but aren't written the same

LifeOnATrain · 08/10/2022 17:58

I just thought if 'albeit' existed then surely so could 'alot'

I don't think anyone ever corrected me till I read it on here and I never use 'alot' for work in a written context anyway!

EndlessMagpies · 08/10/2022 18:02

Notalot.

Now there's a word.

butterpuffed · 08/10/2022 18:03

There's a barber's shop in my town and the name of it is in large letters above their window - Cushty Cut's .

I'm dying to go in and tell them but can't quite pluck up the courage 😂
