Laparoscopy coming soon. I'm terrified..

Hello,

Following on from previous threads regarding my infertility fears. My laparoscopy and hysteroscopy appointments have came through. This is to treat my endometriosis and to remove a dodgy Fallopian tube.

I'm absolutely petrified of actually finally having answers. I'm scared they're gonna discover that my insides are basically all f*cked. I'm scared they're gonna say I've got absolutely no chance of ever conceiving with ivf nevermind naturally. I'm scared they'll remove both tubes and my ovaries.

And to top it all off - I have a major, major phobia of being sick.

Please can anybody who has had a laparoscopy/hysterocopy reassure me or give me any advice.

Is this likely to make me sick?

I understand in the grand scheme of things this is ridiculous but I am terrified.

Thank you so much to anybody who reads this x

Following as I'm about to have laparoscopy for suspected cancer and am also terrified especially of vomiting!

Mrstiggywinkle44 · 08/10/2022 12:37

Hi
I had my first laposcropy last December. I was in the same boat as

Mycatisalesbiantranswoman · 08/10/2022 12:37

Please don't worry. I had it and it was a little uncomfortable and crampy but not terrible. It's not pleasant but I've had worse smears and trips to the dentists. Also, it's very important for your fertility investigations, (sounding like your mum here) so you really must do it. You'll be happier in the long run.

Mycatisalesbiantranswoman · 08/10/2022 12:38

I didn't vomit but that's my experience.

Hi,
I had a lap & dye and hysteroscopy last September after TTC baby number 2 for 5 years. I didn't have any nausea, was a bit sore for a couple of days but recovery was fairly straight forward.
I totally get what you're saying about what they will find, I felt exactly the same. However, I wanted answers, good or bad, so I could move forward. I'd been stuck in the torture that is TTC for 5 years and I needed closure one way or the other!
For me, they found some adhesions from my previous c section which they were able to remove during the surgery. I fell pregnant 2 cycles later and my little boy is now 8 weeks!
Wish you the best of luck

torthecatlady · 08/10/2022 12:39

I had a laparoscopy but wasn't sick. Have you had surgery before and vomited, or is it a worry that you might?

hippopotato · 08/10/2022 12:42

@Decafflatteplease

I'm so sorry to hear this - I wish you all the very very best xxxx

I’ve had several laparoscopies.

The first was to remove a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and the fallopian tube that was badly damaged.

The second one was for a ?ectopic but was actually an ovarian cyst on the side that has the tube. I was told after that surgery that I was very unlikely to conceive naturally as I had one good ovary and one Fallopian tube but on opposite sides.

I then had another lap and ablation of endometriosis, they did a dye test of the remaining tube while they were there.

I don’t remember being sick after any of them, but if you let the anaesthetist know they’ll probably give you an antiemetic. I hope it all works out well for you Flowers

hippopotato · 08/10/2022 12:43

@torthecatlady

I had surgery last year and wasn't sick but this wasn't abdominal or gyno.

The anaesthetist mentioned the most likely surgeries to vomit with are gyno/abdominal/eyes. X

FFS I pressed send by accident too early. What I was saying is I was feeling like you this time last year

Now, I'd like to reassure you that it really is ok. The waiting round for it once admitted was the worst. I was scared of the general anaesthesia more than anything. In the end I just relaxed when they took me down. I woke up in recovery like I was asleep for ten seconds.

What I will say is the worst bit for me was and I need to be honest unfortunately the GA made me very sick for about half an hour after, so if you have any any concerns over this or vomiting fears ask for a anti sickness med before when you speak to the anaesethist. If I need any procedures done I will need it next time. You may be fine it only affects some people.I know you have said sickness scares you so you really need to let them know about this phobia hun

As for afterwards I hardly had any pain at all I had 3 incisions and all healed fine. Drink lots of peppermint tea to ease any wind pains but I was lucky I hardly had any .

Sending hugs and love any other questions please ask

teachermummyme · 08/10/2022 12:46

I had one six years ago before starting fertility treatment. I was scared too, but it was honestly fine. The procedure was quick and I wasn't in much pain at all afterwards. I also wasn't sick or nauseous. It's worth explaining to them your fears of being sick though, as they might give you an anti-emetic.

Thank you everyone - amazing to see how many people have actually had this surgery! Something I knew very little about this rime last year

I wondered if the sickness is related to the anaesthesia.

I had my gallbladder removed a few weeks ago, 4 incisions (one being the belly button, where I previously had my laparoscopy incision) and had no sickness.

Perhaps they can prescribe anti sickness tablets for after the surgery for a "just in case" scenario for your peace of mind?

It definitely is. It can also make you shake and feel cold briefly in recovery. This happened to me too lol but was stopped quickly. Nurse put a heated blanket on me X

tickticksnooze · 08/10/2022 12:52

Speak to the anaesthetist and they can make sure you get anti-emetics with the drugs they give you before you get to the point of being sick. Problem solved.

Feel free to pm me if you would like more of a handhold or in depth what happened with me, process from going in etc happy to help and reassure xx

tickticksnooze · 08/10/2022 12:53

And it's not ridiculous to be scared about surgery and all that it involves. It's normal.

ReachedTheEndofCake · 08/10/2022 12:54

You should see the anaesthetist prior to the procedure. Please do discuss with them about the fear of vomiting.
They will give you antiemetic medication as standard for the anaesthetic, but there are additional meds you could have.
When you wake up in the recovery area, if you do feel nauseous tell the nurse looking after you and they might be able to give you more or a different anti sickness medication.

Have you had a general anaesthetic before?

hippopotato · 08/10/2022 12:55

@Mrstiggywinkle44

I had the shaking and cold after my first surgery too and had to get a heated blanket.

Does this mean I'm more likely to be sick??

No not necessarily hun. Everyone is different each time

Anonymouseposter · 08/10/2022 13:00

I wasn’t sick either. It sounds like many people haven’t had sickness or nausea. I hope that’s reassuring.

hippopotato · 08/10/2022 13:03

@ReachedTheEndofCake

Yes I had ga for surgery earlier this year that lasted an hour. I'm worried my laparoscopy is going to be a longer one like 3 hours (solely from what I've read online) because of how bad it is.

With my first ga I woke up panicking, shivering and cold and had a heated blanket put on me. I did struggle to come round quickly too. Unsure if this all links to the likelihood of being sick too ☹️

I’ve had 2 laparoscopies, I wasn’t sick after either of them and didn’t feel at all nauseous. I woke up shivering with cold and really emotional.

good luck.

hippopotato · 08/10/2022 13:08

@Redcrayons

Thank god - sounds exactly like my first non laparoscopy surgery!

Thank you 🙏
