Laparoscopy coming soon. I'm terrified..

Hello,

Following on from previous threads regarding my infertility fears. My laparoscopy and hysteroscopy appointments have came through. This is to treat my endometriosis and to remove a dodgy Fallopian tube.

I'm absolutely petrified of actually finally having answers. I'm scared they're gonna discover that my insides are basically all f*cked. I'm scared they're gonna say I've got absolutely no chance of ever conceiving with ivf nevermind naturally. I'm scared they'll remove both tubes and my ovaries.

And to top it all off - I have a major, major phobia of being sick.

Please can anybody who has had a laparoscopy/hysterocopy reassure me or give me any advice.

Is this likely to make me sick?

I understand in the grand scheme of things this is ridiculous but I am terrified.

Thank you so much to anybody who reads this x

Just want to thank you all for your help - I do feel much more at ease regarding the sickness side. Still shocked at how many have had this procedure AND have emetophobia!

I'm now praying and praying that the actual lap and hysteroscopy don't reveal anything too devastating fertility wise. I'm at peace (finally) with losing one tube. I just hope everything else looks ok ☹️ xx

Hope it goes fine for you.
I’ve had several laparoscopies- all fine. Got a minor infection in the belly button wound after the last one but not after the others. No vomiting- but did have a bit of discomfort in the shoulder - something to do with air working it’s way up there. Not really painful though. I viewed the earlier ones as stages that would hopefully get me to the end goal. The last one was ovary removal for cancer prevention after I’d had both DC do not as positive a thought , but it was still ok.

Maray1967 · 09/10/2022 14:44

PS I had one knackered tube after childhood surgery and adhesions and the other is not perfect - but still conceived both of mine naturally .

hippopotato · 09/10/2022 15:47

@Maray1967

Really?! (To the tube) did you have a hydrosalpinx too?? I know that it is caused a lot by childhood surgeries too... if so - this has given me major hope!

Thank you so much 🤍🤍

@hippopotato I also had a suspected Hydrosalpinx and was fully expecting to wake up with the ovary and Fallopian tube gone.
Once he got inside it wasn’t a Hydrosalpinx and just general endo damage, I was shocked when I woke up and he hadn’t removed anything, just ‘cleaned it up’ a bit. I know every situation is different but from what I learnt from my lap it’s really hard for them to properly diagnosis pre surgery, once they are able to actually see inside during the procedure it all becomes a lot clearer. Also mine was on my left and my right side is completely healthy and undamaged.

hippopotato · 09/10/2022 16:57

@Northtosouth

That's interesting! How did they manage to suspect a hydrosalpinx? I had an mri and it was seen on that...

I'm really hoping I will be able to conceive naturally after the surgery but just concerned as nothings happened yet and have been trying for a year.

Thank you so much for sharing that with me xx

@hippopotato Ah I didn’t have an MRI it was just from scans but I was told I had a Hydrosalpinx, MRI’s are perhaps more accurate though. Apparently there was fluid in a particular area which is why I was told Hydrosalpinx but it turned out not to be. I didn’t really get much more of an explanation.

After my surgery the consultant did tell me as right side was completely healthy I could still conceive naturally. We only went down the IVF route as we also had male factor so had more against us and didn’t want to waste time. Had we not had any issues with DH my surgeon was convinced I’d conceive naturally. Please update us with how you get on, will keep my fingers crossed for you x

queenrollo · 10/10/2022 09:12

@hippopotato I had hydrosalpinx on the left tube. It was picked up during a hysterosalpingogram.
They discovered when they got in that the tube had fused to the ovary. They were actually able to release it and flush the tube so I didn't lose either. I was told it would increase my chance of ectopic so any subsequent pregnancies would need early scan to rule that out.
After three years of repeated early miscarriage, I got pregnant the month after the lap and 9 years later he's keeping me well and truly on my toes.

I realy hope you get a positive outcome.

hippopotato · 10/10/2022 19:12

@Northtosouth

Thank you for explaining your situation to me - it definitely has provided some comfort. I really hope I have a similar situation!

I definitely will update this thread 🤍🤍

@queenrollo

Thank you so much for sharing - I really hope my situation is similar!

My surgeon did seem confident that provided my other tube is ok I should have no issues conceiving naturally but only time will tell I guess. I was also warned that I'd be of a high chance of experiencing an ectopic too however I haven't been pregnant at all so far. My surgeon did actually put me off getting an hsg before my laparoscopy as he said they can produce false positives/negatives (?!) so I will be having this during my surgery.

Really hoping I'll be able to get pregnant not long after too! 😭 🤞🏻 thank you 🤍

I had a laparotomy a couple of months ago. I also have severe emetophobia so spoke to the anaesthetist pre surgery and she gave me a spinal instead of a GA. I was still out but less likely to feel sick. The only thing that made me nauseous was morphine which I had lots of post surgery.

hippopotato · 11/10/2022 00:00

@BergamotandLime

Is a spinal an option??

I had morphine after my first surgery but think that was oramorph (?!) rather than full on morphine..

BergamotandLime · 11/10/2022 00:02

@hippopotato - I don't know, it depends - I was in for four nights with mine and they knew I would be so they may wish to avoid a spinal as you are bedbound for a while afterwards. However, the anaesthetist was v accomodating so I would definitely try and have a chat with someone at your pre-op. They also have fab anti-emetic drugs these days.

hippopotato · 18/10/2022 23:51

Argh I've realised I'm going to be on my period for the surgery.

If anyone is still around on this thread - has this happened to anyone else?? I've already tried to rebook but they won't let me as I've already been waiting almost a year!

Thank you 😬

Hey @hippopotato

They refused to do my lap when I was on my period and moved the date to 2 weeks before I was due on.

In terms of the procedure, mine was to remove endometriosis and scar tissue. I've had it 3 times now and although it's a little sore after, I felt okay within a week.

They give you anti sickness medicine before you wake up so you shouldn't be sick. I never have been.

The worst bit for me is the trapped wind that causes shoulder pain, a hot wheat bag and peppermint tea works for that, also not sleeping flat, prop yourself up with a few pillows.

Good luck xx

hippopotato · 19/10/2022 11:35

@elm26

Thank you so much.

I wonder why they cancelled yours but refuse to change mine! They've said it's no problem but I can't see how it can't be an issue!! Especially when it's a hysteroscopy too!

Oh well I guess I've got to trust the professionals rather than my opinion!! X

GodspeedJune · 19/10/2022 14:02

@hippopotato You may want to double check that. Was it just an admin type person you spoke to?

I was told I couldn’t be on my period and given northisterone to make sure I wasn’t.

hippopotato · 19/10/2022 16:26

@GodspeedJune

Yeah it was the receptionist but she did check first.
I know at my initial consultation months ago the surgeon said if I'm on my period he will see that whilst operating (can't remember the exact wording as that sounds odd!!) so I assume it really isn't a big deal...

I might call them again..?
