Am I mad to consider accepting a promotion without a pay rise?

Position has become available due to various redundancies (previous manager had been there years and was on a lot more money). I've subsequently been offered the job to manage a team of 11 but the condition / clause is to agree to stay on my current salary for at least a year due to budget restrictions and 'cost saving' strategies...

After a year there may be a pay rise (no guarantee) but no where near that of previous person's salary. The advantage would be I'd get experience in the role so could go elsewhere with that and go up the career ladder but in the meantime I'd have all the extra responsibility and stress without any extra cash in my pocket!

Are they taking the complete piss?

Yes they’re taking the piss

Bywayofanupdate · 06/10/2022 21:18

Yes they are

Starlightstarbright1 · 06/10/2022 21:18

Personally wouldn't do it..

More responsibility with no extra pay..

SquishyGloopyBum · 06/10/2022 21:18

This is horrendous. So they could pay the previous person substantially more?

Don't let them take you for a mug op. Know your worth.

Was the previous person in the job male?

Randomness12 · 06/10/2022 21:18

Yes they are taking the piss. No way would I agree to this. They need to meet you at least half way… and then a concrete agreement for when the salary will increase to what level and on what date

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/10/2022 21:19

Yes they are taking the piss. It they had to externally higher what would they advertise it at?

Magnanimouse · 06/10/2022 21:19

Yes, they are taking the piss.

You're not going to be doing it for the money. You might want to do it for fulfilment, or for future career enhancement, so decide what is best for you. And if you don't do it, someone else will.

But make that decision for you, not for the company.

Hymnulop · 06/10/2022 21:19

Where the fuck do you work? I mean if you really want the experience and you think it'll help your CV then do it. But on the condition if you do XYZ within X number of months the pay will rise to X amount then.

mrsfollowill · 06/10/2022 21:19

No way! - massive piss take- don't do it.

CadburyCrunchy · 06/10/2022 21:22

@SquishyGloopyBum yes it was a man which I'd already thought of but haven't mentioned as I know the response would be he had worked in that position for nearly 20 years so salary went up with time. I'd effectively be starting from the bottom even though there isn't actually an official pay scale...

Unicorn717 · 06/10/2022 21:22

Taking the fucking piss.

balalake · 06/10/2022 21:23

Yes, surely even £1000 a year could be afforded.

hettie · 06/10/2022 21:23

They are totally totally taking the piss. It's a job seekers market. If they funny have budget to pay the functions/roles then they are on a shaky financial trajectory and you should be job hunting anyways ...Say no ... You really must say no bet they reconsider

AriettyHomily · 06/10/2022 21:24

They're taking the piss, it's insulting and I'd be looking at the market to move. You don't owe them anything.

mackthepony · 06/10/2022 21:24

😂😂😂

Why would you even consider this?

QuiltedHippo · 06/10/2022 21:24

Not a fucking chance, please know your worth.

Have you line managed before, 11 people with full complex lives holding you responsible for their career is hard bloody work

Iwanttoholdyourham · 06/10/2022 21:25

I'd take it, and immediately start interviewing elsewhere for a role of the same higher level (and more pay). Sometimes it's easier to get a title if you already have the title...

If they're struggling with cost-saving measures, your future at that company is probably limited anyway, so I'd be looking at strategies to leave on my terms. This would help with leaving.

GiltEdges · 06/10/2022 21:25

And if you say no? They have to hire externally and pay market rate. Don’t be taken for a mug.

KoalaCape · 06/10/2022 21:27

Questions to ask yourself...

  • Do you have the capacity to take on the extra stress and workload? What is home life like now and how would the extra work stress impact on it?
  • If you didn't take the promotion would you be happy with the other likely candidates getting it? If they're shockingly bad but will end up managing you this may sway your decision.
  • Do you want the career progression? If current person wasn't leaving would you have been looking for promotion soon?
  • Will it genuinely open doors for you in a year or so to move on elsewhere for a money promotion?
  • Do you like the company you work for? As this will be hugely challenged by more pressure and stress without financial gain

You don't need to reply to me but they're things I'd be asking myself. They are 100% taking the piss but it's for you to decide if it'd worth it.

Freedom2023 · 06/10/2022 21:28

Not in a million years!!!! I bet if you turn it down then they'll miraculously find the money to either pay you to do it or pay a new recruit.
They are trying to take the piss out of you and will only get away with this if you let them.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/10/2022 21:28

Agree with everyone else. Piss taking.

You are leaving yourself with no bargaining power - why would they give you a rise (in a year or any other time) if you are willing to do it for the same money?

You'd feel resentful, and your only option would be to leave & that's putting pressure on you.

blubberyboo · 06/10/2022 21:28

They are taking the piss but it is also hard to get management work without experience so I’d be inclined to get 6 months under my belt and they job hunt elsewhere.

silverbubbles · 06/10/2022 21:29

So you stay in your job on the same money or you take the new job work hard, pick up the experience, up skill yourself, make your self invaluable. You are then in a position to demand the pay rise or you can jump ship.

Do it.

NotMyDayJob · 06/10/2022 21:33

Line managing that many people is hard work, they are absolutely taking the piss. If they have to go external they'd have to pay decently, they're just trying to get you on the cheap and I'd bet the promised payrise would never materialise because once you've proven you'll do it for free whey would they pay you more?

jessieminto · 06/10/2022 21:34

Remember is they hire someone through an agency, they also pay 15-20% of the salary as an agency fee. Even if they hired someone on the same salary as you to do the managers job, they are saving 20% by not using an agency. That 20% should be yours.
