To tell my DD's school she isn't doing a detention for this?

My daughter leaves for school every day at 7.30am to get the bus to school. Today unfortunetly the bus was late, and she ended up being 10 minutes late. They've given her a 30 minute detention for tommorow. I am going to phone her school tommorow, and have a calm word, apparently even her tutor thinks its stupid!

AIBU?

Not unreasonable, the school can check with the bus company if they really want to.

Setyoufree · 05/10/2022 16:57

I definitely agree. It was entirely out of her control (and will happen often)

AuntieN · 05/10/2022 16:58

If your buses are anything like ours the school should be thankful the bus came at all! YANBU!

bitingcat · 05/10/2022 16:59

I work in a school that is heavily reliant on buses, we don't give our pupils detention if the bus was late. Hopefully it's been an oversight and you'll get it sorted when you chat to her tutor.

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 05/10/2022 17:00

Yes call them. I've questioned the deputy head of my childs school on 4 detentions and he's looked in to each one, said it's a dumb reason to get one and removed them. We all make silly decisions sometimes and we don't have to just go along with a consequence from a teachers silly choice. We can question bad decisions.

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 05/10/2022 17:02

I make dumb choices daily btw I'm not teaching bashing 🤣🙈 I like to think I correct those mistakes when I realise though.

Pickledcurlywurly · 05/10/2022 17:05

Do other kids that go to the school get the same bus? Were they also late and got detention too? Or is it just your DC?

Usually school doesn't give detention if the school bus is late.

girlmom21 · 05/10/2022 17:07

YADNBU. Maybe in future ask her to let you know if the bus is late so you can notify the school she'll be late in advance?

Meltingsocks · 05/10/2022 17:08

As a parent you can withhold consent to keep your DC after school hours anyway, but agree making them see sense if preferable

SweetsAndChocolates · 05/10/2022 17:16

Are there others who catch the same bus? If so, I'm guessing a few have detention tomorrow.

Even if it's just your Dd who catches bus, they really can't punish her for public transport delays.

Mariposista · 05/10/2022 17:22

Absolutely not unreasonable. And don’t let her do the detention whatever they say.

It's not a school bus, its public transport. There is no school bus here.

Ah that's a bit different. What's the time table like? If the bus she caught allowed 20 minutes say for if it wad a bit late then fine but if she caught the bus that would get there with 5 mins to spare then she needs to get an earlier one.

gogohmm · 05/10/2022 17:31

With public transport being late occasionally should never be cause for a detention if it was late however if the bus is persistently late she needs to get an earlier bus. I had this with a member of staff (not school) that if her train was late 3 out of 5 days, and she needs to rush (to the point of out of breathe) to make it to work on time if it was on time, she needs to catch the one 30 mins earlier.

Whether something is reasonable can be nuanced but in this case if the first time then yes school is unreasonable

She's already leaving early as first time she went for the bus that should have got her there right on time, and it was late.

This bus SHOULD get her there with 20 mins to spare, if it actually turned up on time.

God, teachers really don't do themselves any favours pulling shit like this. Yes ring and say no way is she doing a detention for something that is out of her control.

In that case no. I would send the bus time table and highlight this fact.

properdoughnut · 05/10/2022 17:36

That's a no she shouldn't do detention. If it happens again soon after then she's going to have to get an even earlier bus if possible.

SirChenjins · 05/10/2022 17:38

Is there an earlier one and if so, how early would she arrive at school (assuming it was on time)?

If it’s ridiculously early then I would be pointing this out to the school. A detention for being 10 minutes late it completely OTT.

ReeDeeHee · 05/10/2022 17:39

No, YANBU as long as she's not late frequently.
Most workplaces allow people to be late on occasion without making a huge fuss!

Raindancer411 · 05/10/2022 17:39

As @SirChenjins said, how much earlier would the bus get here there. If the school gates don't even open at that time, it would be unfair to expect a student to wait around outside.

lanthanum · 05/10/2022 17:40

If she is catching a bus that gives her a good margin, they ought to accept that if it occasionally runs very late then it is not her fault. If she's a new year 7, she's probably not argued - but if you were to contact the school and explain then I'd hope that they would let her off.

I think I've told the story before of a route near here where some kids catch the bus due 2 minutes before school starts, and others catch the one 20/30 minutes earlier. The first group put up with fairly regular detentions rather than get up earlier. On one occasion, the first bus didn't turn up at all, and both groups of kids arrived late on the later one. One mum had let the school know, and on arrival they gave detentions to the ones who normally caught the later one, but not those who would have caught the earlier one!

She'd probably be stood outside school for an hour. Doesn't matter, shes taking all the steps to ensure she is there at the correct time, the bus being late so unpredictably is out of her control, and she should not be punished for it.

YANBU.

School needs a word.
