No baby boy clothes anywhere

Slight exaggeration sorry, but is it just me or are there always more baby girl clothes in shops than boys?

today I went to asda and Sainsbury’s, was disappointed with the selection. I want to get a dressing gown for my baby for Christmas asda had some but they were all pink or clearly orientated towards girls.

nothing against gender non-conformity but I wanted like a cute bear or dragon dressing gown. Even the gender neutral stuff always looks more girl oriented

Tesco, H&M, tk maxx and even M&S when I went recently also had barely any boys clothes. (Tk maxx had some adorable halloweeny/autumnal baby dresses and I was gutted they had nothing in for boys)

just to be clear most these shops have plenty in for older boys but just not much for newborn - 1.5 year olds

am I being unreasonable and everyone else has no issue with the ratio of boy to girl clothing?

Its true. Much less choice for boys than for girls. It continues as they get older too.

I gave up long ago for boys clothes in shops - jo jo and next online were my go to. Once they grew out of jo jo I went over to landsend. Excellent quality from jo jo and lands end and always passed onto cousins and sibling.

MooseBreath · 05/10/2022 14:17

I have definitely noticed this. Every supermarket has the same boy clothes: navy/grey/khaki sweatpants, mud-coloured coats, dingy dinosaur and Minecraft shirts, black or brown trainers. Maybe half an aisle of choice if you're lucky. Girls have an aisle and a half with loads more options that are better fitting!

PutYourShoesOnWereLate · 05/10/2022 14:19

My local Tesco have some gorgeous baby boy clothes in the Mrs Hinch special range. Looks beautifully soft and comfortable. Almost wished my DS was small enough to squash into them.

Mommabear20 · 05/10/2022 14:23

I've always found primark to be the best for boys clothes! At least this summer they've had plenty of bright coloured T-shirts and a variety of animals on them. I've even bought a few in bigger sizes in case the range isn't as good next year 😂

Moodump · 05/10/2022 14:24

I’ve enjoyed dressing my boy more than I thought. I shop in H&M and Next for him mostly, odd bit from Sainsburys, George or Matalan. Loved Zara mini but feel like he’s not quite ready for the next range up as it feels quite grown up.

Ive got boys things for sale (including an unused unisex jojo Maman Bebe dressing gown) on my vinted site, if interested message and I’ll give you my user name :) my style is neutral, unisex - no garish colours/dinosaurs/tractors 🤣

Mountainhike · 05/10/2022 14:24

There was a thread about this a while ago. One poster commented that she had opened a children’s clothes shop and when she began to stock it all her suppliers advised her to stock mainly girls clothing. That’s what sells.

vix3rd · 05/10/2022 14:30

I, personally, think boy clothes have got better. For a while they all seemed to be brown.

TheBirdintheCave · 05/10/2022 14:31

I find H&M to be the best for clothes for my son :) They have some really lovely jumpers and smart cords.

Greentomatoes21 · 05/10/2022 14:39

I completely agree. I was in sainsbury's today and counted 9 Halloween costumes (dresses) on the rails and 2 "boys" ones ie little suits/trousers. 9 dresses!!! I have found Sainos to be particularly bad at stocking toddler boy stuff compared to toddler girl.

NCFT0922 · 05/10/2022 14:42

My first years do lovely dressing gowns

AriettyHomily · 05/10/2022 14:44

The ships are just shit imo. I've got twin girls next never stocks more than one of each size in anything and when they want the same it's a pita. Primark has a huge 'boys' section compared to the 'girls'. I've just bought mine tracksuit bottoms from the boys because they're looser cut and shock horror have pockets in them!

Online is the way forward, my high street has been decimated though we have a next, decathlon, deichmarch (sp) and h & m where the kids section is half the size it used to be.

ComebackQueen · 05/10/2022 14:47

OP you have my sympathies.

There is a clear unspoken agenda to make everything gender neutral, from toilets to baby clothes.

I resorted to making my own clothes from my husband’s and even my old clothes.

Etsy have some nice pieces as do Zara Kids but the price point was too much to justify.

i have donated bag full of clothing to the charity shop as sadly I fear I’m too old to have any more children.

the Charity shop lady remarks every time I go in with a batch, usually three months, that they fly off the shelves. She has said it’s been noted that there’s a clear shortage of boys clothes and, all the clothes have a dinosaur on them.

also notice how boys clothing is rarely on sale? Mainly because there’s not enough stocked for them to have an excess of.

Hahaha. I got some hand me downs for when he is around 3 and a lot of those were navy or grey 😂

This 😭

Daisychainsx · 05/10/2022 15:32

Mamas and papas have the most gorgeous baby boy clothes at the moment, and jojo maman bebe... neither are particularly affordable tho! I agree, the girls things seems to be a lot nicer and a lot more available right now!

AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2022 15:34

We've bought some recently. Plenty of choice in John Lewis and JoJos.

properdoughnut · 05/10/2022 15:35

If it helps all the plain cheaper clothes I like for my daughter are always in the boys section of next in store.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 05/10/2022 15:38

twoandcooplease · 05/10/2022 13:54

I just bought two dinosaur dressing gowns from Matalan if that's any help x

Ooo thank you I’ll have a look on their website!

Wait till hes a teenager, nothing but black nylon in my wash basket now 😭

FayeGovan · 05/10/2022 15:47

Xmas stockings are the same. Plenty of choices for things for girls, hardly anything for boys.

Heartbreaktuna · 05/10/2022 15:49

I totally agree. One boys aisle of clothes versus four aisles of girls clothes. It's so frustrating. I really want to touch and feel clothes, not buy them online. Finding something like a light weight knitted jumper is almost impossible to judge online. Descriptions are rubbish.

H&M has loads of lightweight knitted jumpers fyi

The girls section might be bigger but it’s all pink and not really appropriate. There are lots of skirts and dresses which are pointless on a baby. Or rompers with tights. The girls clothing also has wording such as ‘be kind’, ‘always smiling’. I had to buy DD some bottoms from the boys section because all the girls leggings were thin cotton, I got some boys joggers because they were fleece lined and would keep her a bit warmer.

scunner · 05/10/2022 16:00

I am always on the look out for clothes for my toddler grandson and I’m fed up with dinosaurs on everything, from blankets, duvet covers, vests and tee shirts.
This isn’t just a fad this year. It’s since he was born! Who wants to put ferocious dinosaurs on baby clothes?

Totally agree. I have a son and remember having the same experience as OP. Now pregnant with his sister and I looked at packs of newborn babygrows online earlier. One pack said "cute and kind". This is in newborn size, vom.
