Surprise money on electric meter?

remymartinn · 04/10/2022 19:57

I came home from work today, my electric meter read 'payment top up successful'. I haven't topped up & I asked my dad who lives with me and he hasn't topped up. He couldn't be able to anyway as I have the card with me all the time.

My question is who put £64 on my electric meter....? Has anyone else had anything similar as was thinking it could be a government cost of living help thing.

Do I call my provider and ask?

Yes it's your first instalment of the 400 quid thing.

AnathemaPulsifer · 04/10/2022 19:59

It’s the money from the government. £66 a month to start with, then £67. £400 in total.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/10/2022 19:59

OP, everyone in the country is getting it. Where have you been?

Beneficialchampion2 · 04/10/2022 20:00

Is this a joke?

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 04/10/2022 20:02

Have you been living in a cave???

Msgrieves · 04/10/2022 20:03

I thought you had to use a voucher to get it though? Suppose it might be automatic with some providers. I get payments taken straight from my benefits, so I imagine it will just make a slight dent in my arrears, great.

HippeePrincess · 04/10/2022 20:03

@Beneficialchampion2 why would it be a joke? Not everyone follows or has access to the news. I didn’t have a tv for years and wouldn’t have known then.

Well OP has access to the internet. Even a quick google of '£64 on my electric meter', would assist.

Have you seen if you're entitled to any extra help with your bills? If you're on a low income and in arrears, you might be. Have a look at the MSE cost of living help on this:

remymartinn · 04/10/2022 20:20

I'm was aware families with low income will receive help towards energy costs what I wasn't aware of was it being put directly onto the meter as usually you would receive a letter.

I didn't realise the government could bypass the companies and put it straight onto the accounts given that it's the companies that are the f*cking problem.

The government isn't bypassing them. It's the company issuing it (and then getting it back of the government by some mechanism).

Also it's not the energy suppliers who are the problem, it's the producers

remymartinn · 04/10/2022 20:28

@WyldeSwan Thank you for explaining

The government gave the money to the energy providers. The energy providers give it to their own customers. Some will get it added to the meter, some get it knocked off their bill, some get vouchers. It all depends on how you usually pay your bill. It will be £400 spread over several months.

This person has access to the internet. The whole world is at their fingertips, your response is foolish really. I don't know of a soul who isn't aware of the energy support offered by the government.

pogostickplastique · 04/10/2022 20:39

All I want to know is why mine hasn't been topped up 😂

HilarityEnsues · 04/10/2022 20:40

Mine is coming by voucher which is very annoying as you have to go to the Post Office for it (a drive away). Getting it on the meter is ideal. I wouldn't have been expecting this!

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/10/2022 20:40

off to check my electric meter

Just checked mine and I have indeed had money added to my electric meter, is this only for electric? Not gas?

Yes, they are doing it that was because everyone has electricity but not everyone has gas. If they had split it there would be mayhem.

Just Checked my meter, no money added

Shiningstarr · 04/10/2022 22:13

Wahoo I've checked mine and mine has been credited

Fiddlersgreen · 04/10/2022 22:19

Different providers are doing it in different ways.
I pay by direct debit with EDF and they are refunding the £64 into my account a few days after the DD payment goes out each month.
My colleague is with British Gas and they are taking off before the DD goes out so her DD was less this month
