Mixed sex toilets
Wichit · 04/10/2022 01:15
I work for an organisation that employs about 250 people. We have high staff turnover and a lot of us work hybrid.
A few months ago all our toilets at work got changed to mixed sex. They are self contained individual cubicles. We didn't get consulted or anything, just got to work on Monday and every toilet had a joint man and woman sign.
About a month ago I went to use the loo, opened the door and there was a bloke already in there with his back to me. He turned around when I opened the door. He was semi undressed and I could clearly see his lad etc.
Lots of apologies, swift door close etc. I hadn't actually met him previously due to hybrid and high turnover.
It made me feel uncomfortable. I don't know the guy.
I raised with my line manager that this new toilet policy is potentially putting staff in tricky situations and he told me to take it to HR. Which I did and their response is that he probably forgot to close the door.
Well I mean yeah hopefully so, but nobody has any way of knowing that and anyway that is not the issue. The issue is that my employer should not be facilitating a set-up where such ambiguous encounters can happen. I think, anyway. AIBU?
Am I being unreasonable?

Accessible toilets do not have shared wash facilities.
Simonjt · 04/10/2022 12:48
Like virtually all accessible toilets and changing places in the UK, which oddly no one seems to protest against.
Neither do the toilets the person I was quoting.

I'll ask again to those who think mixed facilities are fine.
Who do they benefit?
Do women benefit, if so how?
Why should the comfort and safety of women be compromised for something that does not benefit us at all?
I prefer them as you don't have to queue for nearly as long

I have never seen a shared area for a toilet on a train or plane @KimberleyClark
Have you? That would be a mixed sex toilets.
I think on trains they are single use toilets, which are not mixed sex, but single use. No shared area.
The toilet in my house is not mixed sex, it's single use; one at a time.
I think the point is that the scenario mentioned in OP could happen in any of these spaces, yet people don't seem to be getting hysterical.
It's perfectly possible that a man could not lock the door on a plane or train and a woman could open the door.

Eh? Which person were you quoting. The OP hasn't said whether there are mixed wash facilities or not. In a work place it's highly unlikely that the employer has had a refit over night and without consultation to fit cubilces with individual washrooms.

I dont understand this argument.
Firstly how does twice as many people using the toilet mean shorter queues.
How does the removal of urinals which speed things up for men mean that the que moves along quicker?
The only reason they would be quicker is because people are avoiding them.

much less likely as they open on to truly public spaces rather than a mixed sex hand wash area.

It's a no from me when there is space for both male and female toilets. I don't fancy having a bad belly or cramping and having to rush out because a man is waiting. A woman I would feel comfortable to shout and say having problems and know she will understand if that makes sense
bythere · 04/10/2022 14:10
@Whatwouldscullydo "Theres also a disturbing number of men who either decide to take their girls into the women's, or offload the care to women because the mens is apparently so disgusting and they refuse to take the kids in the mens toilets."
That's what I can't figure out, how someone can't see the separation is much more important from adults rather than from young children.

I hate mixed sex toilets I feel vulnerable. I would use the disabled toilet if were you in this instance. I absolutely do it feel comfortable.
How is the disabled toilet any different to the mixed sex toilet the OP has described?

I think it shows just what mentality is behind mixed sex toilets.
They are painted as quicker, cleaner, safer, more inclusive, easier for dads etc
But when you think about it the same men who apparently piss all over the seats and make the mens so disgusting will be in the mixed.
The same men who apparently the children shouldn't be around in the mens are also in the mixed.
The same men so dangerous they bear up non comformjng males in the mens will be in the mixed.
Etc
So what makes anyone think its going to be cleaner amd safer ?
Why when men could keep their spaces clean so children can use them, is the answer to bring these same filthy men into the mixed ? I mean its done on purpose in that case surely? I mean unless they undergo a personality transplant when they go through the door effectively all men are doing is using women as behaviour management in mixed toilets. It makes no sense. Unless you realise that perhaps men are just lying to you and/or deliberately maintaining the situation where mens spaces are so unsafe/unclean as an excuse to either be able to override womens boundaries while we all cheer on "such a considerate dad" or to ensure women have nothing.
I mean in spaces where there's a separate room for urinals that leaves it so thaT men have the mens and men have the mixed and women have no where. We should not be encouraging this.
Why women allow themselves to be conned into believing that this is beneficial to women i don't know. I mean theoretically it would be possible to have these lovely enclosed clean spaces as a single sex provision? Women could petition/fight for that of they so desire?
Why haven't we up until now? Could it be the real reason mixed sex spaces are suddenly apparently cleaner /safer/more private is not because anywhere wants to create sone lovely environment in which both sexes can be in states of vulnerability in safety. The doors are floor to ceiling so you cant put a camera phone under the door. The reason cleaners pop by more often is a safety precaution and because mixed sex toilets frequently have urine in the seats. Is ther a reason why this is necessary/happening ? Have we forgotten why we had separate spaces to begin with.
Its bad enough males have basically fought to make it so women have no where we can go where males can't also follow us. But we have been manipulated into thinking its all such a wonderful idea and we become thankful for it. I dont get it.

Mixed feelings, but I prefer single sex. I used to clean the public toilets at the end of the day in a large store. They were single sex and whilst both sexes could be filthy, the mens were worse, stank of piss, the floors were sticky in front of the urinals and I had to wipe stuff off the walls that could have been semen or phlegm. The staff toilets weren't much better and the male staff constantly had to be given talks about it.
On the other hand, the self contained cubicles with sink and bin are quite convenient if you are using a Mooncup etc. But a few weeks ago I went into the unisex toilets in a large burger chain in Liverpool, there was piss all over the seat and the wall behind the toilet, it stank of male piss. There were a few toilets and they were all the same.

mrsjohnnylawrence · 04/10/2022 12:10
but @cbatopainttheshed what you describe are not mixed sex toilets, you describe single cubicle toilets and I am assuming from the post, perhaps wrongly? that there is a shared mixed sex area in the OP's case?
The op describes them as self contained cubicles which to me spends like they have the sink and toilet with the cubicle so I think that's exactly as I was thinking them to be.

Well, for what it's worth my DH will take our DD(4 at the end of the month) into either the men's or a family facility depending on what's available. He says he'd feel very infringing on women and girls privacy by going into theirs. We've told her she can use either since she's just a little girl but "mummy and daddy have to use the one for them."
Good post, by the way.

How is the disabled toilet any different to the mixed sex toilet the OP has described?
The OP said individual cubicles not a separate room like a disabled toilet . Are there gaps at the top and bottom of the doors, does each individual cubicle have a sink and sanitary bin? If the only change is the signage, then the employer is putting their female staff at risk of voyeurism etc.
autumn1610 · 04/10/2022 16:06
Firstly it would be good to clarify what the OP means by mixed sex toilets….
By the sounds of it it is a self contained toilet/sink etc however not totally clear
If as above then YABU it doesn’t affect you as this is the same for accessible toilets and no one has an issue with users having to share mixed in these. Total privacy apart from the guy purposely/or not leaving the door unlocked which is an entirely different issue.
if on the other had its individual cubicles not self contained and it’s shared hand washing facilities then YANBU everyone should have the right to feel safe in the toilets both female and male and those in between.
I’m all for 3 options exclusively male/exclusively female/non gendered plus accessible. Same for changing rooms. Some males won’t feel comfortable either sharing with women. I don’t agree with it being the female toilets that are typically converted and still having an exclusively male toilet
