To absolutely despise job centre staff?

backacge · 03/10/2022 15:23

I receive universal credit to top me up. I am a masters student in a vocational subject that will 100 percent result in a job, I work ten - twelve hours a week, sometimes more and am a single mum. I am trying my best. Over summer I work as often as I can also and make enough that the job centre aren't on my back as I'm earning enough.

Just received a notification that I must attend a work review on Thursday. Number 1 - I have uni that day. Number 2 - what more do they actually want me to do? I am in uni 3 days out the week then the other 2 I am studying. Saturday I work.

I am beyond frustrated. I always find the staff there to be rude and obnoxious and look down their nose at me, even though im probably more qualified than them.

@backacge thanks I’m going for a walk to cool off. Anyway good luck with your studies and YANBU

Wow just wow. You chose to do the masters and attend uni instead of working

This attitude is so short-sighted. Within two generations in results in a country in which only the very wealthy have access to higher education. It's OP and OP's child who will be funding your late-life care. Would you like them to be higher earners or not?

But the wording of your OP was about "despising" job centre staff? Not an attack?

Meseekslookatme · 03/10/2022 18:22

I personally got on just fine with the Job centre staff when I got made redundant.
Even got a hug when I got another job within weeks.
They have a hard job to do. I don't envy them at all, especially when people look down on them.
It's uncalled for.

YellowTreeHouse · 03/10/2022 18:25

You can despise them all you want, they don’t care. But if you want the money you thankfully have to jump through their hoops 😊

A lot of people despise social workers because they do little to no good, just so you’re aware.

To be fair, you're two for a pair, you and @Andypandy799 You are just as bad as one another. You can't see it though. How rude you're being.. Either of you.

Complete and utter bullshit.

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps how rude I'm being? I've not attacked a single person on this thread. I made a comment in anger which I probably shouldn't have made as I have also come across certain staff in the jobcentre who were lovely, and others not so nice. I spoke in anger but I haven't be purposefully vile and nasty to people on this thread, even when they have been to me.

@Dutch1e Everyone who has a small amount of aptitude even has access to university now. Everyone can get the loans. Loads of people will never have to pay back what's effectively a grant, because they won't earn enough.

@backacge A lot of people do dislike social workers unfortunately.

I find expressing this kind of glee towards someone who's clearly stressed out, about them having to "jump through hoops" to get enough money to survive, more unpleasant than aforesaid stressed-out person complaining about Jobcentre staff and verbally lashing out about them (not even at them, but anonymously elsewhere).

Yep. Rude to the JC staff, making out you're better than them! You were rude.

Anyway, FWIW I am on your side when it comes to doing your studies, but your attitude towards JC staff was rude! And you sticking up for @Andypandy799 did make me a bit Confused He was plain rude with what he said about people claiming PIP and DLA and then tried to backpedal when he was called out. How on earth can you defend him?

I don't know what to make of you OR this thread tbh! I agree it needs deleting though.

No, it’s not. Social workers are pretty hated. A quick google will show you that.

ShaNaNaNa · 03/10/2022 18:40

OP, if you're hoping to be a social worker, let alone pass a post-grad qualification first, it might be a good ideas to sort out your grammar - people have 'gone' from attacking me...

Petty? Probably, but social workers hold posts of huge responsibility, and liaise often with people I work with. Your written English needs to sound professional.

Yes, that's exactly the point. Right now almost everyone has access to university, and when you start down the road of saying 'short-term gain is better than long term qualification' then that access crumbles within two generations.

I'm writing on an anonymous forum, not writing an essay or a report.

@YellowTreeHouse doesn't make it right. I was saying 'utter bullshit' to the poster that claimed that social workers do very little, that is utter bullshit, not the fact they're disliked. We speak about this a lot at uni and how social workers are used as scapegoats when things go wrong. What's the alternative? Should no one do the job then?

OP posts:
backacge · 03/10/2022 18:59

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps I was defending what he said, but I was pointing out that posters were attacking him and he was clearly becoming distressed. He had said he has mental health issues and I just don't think it's fair, whether online or offline, to continuously attack someone when they have clarified what they meant and where they are showing signs and blatantly telling you they're feeling distressed.

social workers are used as scapegoats when things go wrong.

That is the case for job centre staff as well. But it's OK to look down on them and think you're better. Apparently.

YellowTreeHouse · 03/10/2022 19:05

I was the poster who said social workers are despised because people have the general opinion they do little to no good. They have that opinion for a reason.

Yes because the media use them as scapegoats. Most of the time social workers have acted within the law and used the duties and powers available to them however their seniors and judges have made the wrong decision which has resulted in tragic outcomes. Yet the social workers get the brunt of the back lash.

It's not, and I've said that I wrote that comment in anger and I shouldn't have.
