If you found a stamped addressed envelope, would you post it?

I left an envelope on a shop till which had an address and a stamp on. It was very thin and slightly see through so obviously no cash or anything worth stealing.

The shop said they haven't seen it so I guess someone picked it up with their shopping.

Would you post it, if you found it? In all honesty, I'm not sure if I would because it seems somehow wrong to, as if I'm taking responsibility for someone else's decision.

In my case, it doesn't matter if they do or don't but the recipient and me are curious to see if it turns up.

YANBU - I would NOT post it.
YANU - I would post it.

I’ve found a stamped letter and posted it. I’d hope someone would do the same for me if I ever dropped a letter or card.

I'd post it. I'd feel really bad if I'd scooped it up with my shopping and didn't!

If I'd noticed it on the counter, I'd probably give it to the staff.

If I saw it in the street, I'd post it.

If in a shop, I would hand it in, but outside I would post it.

Isn't there a story of Oscar Wilde (IIRC) throwing stamped letters out of his window with absolute confidence that a member of the great British Public would pick them up and post them?

I have posted a found letter but wrote on the envelope to say it was found, so please check with sender before actioning anything (weirdly it was to a churchy organisation so maybe it was part of a psychology experiment!)

I'd post it.

Someone once found a postcard addressed to me that my friend had dropped on a street in America, and they stuck some stamps on it and posted it to me in the UK.

They added a little ‘found this and thought I’d post it’ note on it too.
It was very sweet of them.

In the shop I probably would just hand it over to the person behind the till. On the street I would post it.

That sounds like the best solution.

I’d hand it to the cashier.

I've found a few in the past and always post them.

I would post it.

For those saying they wouldn’t, why not?

It could be a letter someone wrote but then had second thoughts about and decided not to post it. Like, 'I'll love you to the day I die, let's get back together'. 😂

I'm over-thinking this, aren't I?

I'd just leave it where it was.

I found a bank card on the street in central London. I chopped it up in the bin! Didn't know what else to do with it. So at least noone went on a contactless spree

It's just a judgement call

Yes I would. I recently lost an envelope containing personal information on a dog walk in Salisbury. I retraced my steps for 2 hours but no sign of it.
Next thing I got a letter from the company confirming recept etc, so some kind soul clearly posted it for me. I wish I knew who so I could thank them.

When I worked in a shop we had this often. Of course we posted them, what else could we do! We assumed the senders would think they HAD posted them, so would never come back for them anyway.

I would post it too. If I found it in a shop I would mention it to the staff there but I would still post it.

I think maybe I would open it, check if it was something they might have changed their mind about, and post if not!

Huh? When I found a bank card I contacted the bank and the card was returned to the rightful owner. Not sure why you would cut it up rather than return it to them?

I found a bank card on the wall outside my house. I called the bank number in it and they said to cut it up ASAP and they'd contact the customer and send him out a new card.

Because the person might have changed their mind about posting it.
