How much do you spend on food per week?

I did a quick search and this isn’t been discussed since July I don’t think. There’s been lots of price hikes since then even. I spent 150 pound in Asda earlier and that’s for a family of 3, and I was buying all the cheap brands, no alcohol or treats, and limiting fresh fruit and veg. I did buy cleaning stuff, laundry power, etc. This seems so expensive to me. Am I being unreasonable and unrealistic in my expectation of how much it should cost to feed us in a week? Any advice on how I can further cut the bill would be appreciated.

£20 is usual give or take.

33goingon64 · 01/12/2022 22:32

Family of 4. I used to be able to do Ocado every week and spend £100. Now it's more like £160 and that doesn't last the week.

PicturesOfLily · 01/12/2022 22:44

I shop at Asda (click and collect) and spend roughly £80 a week for 2 adults and 2 small dc (1 primary, 1 nursery). That includes cleaning products and basic toiletries but no alcohol. Both dc eat at my mums twice a week and dd1 goes to breakfast club the other 3 days (usually after breakfast at home…) and dd2 eats at nursery 3 days a week. Oh and I get my lunch for free at work during term time so it could be a lot more! Takeaways usually come from discretional spends.

How much would you say it works out per meal? And how many people does a recipe feed?

@PepsiMaxAholic less than £3.00 per head - MUCH cheaper with the first box 65% discount. That’s for a really decent meal, always good quality meat and generous portions - a meal that feels like a treat if that makes sense.
For us, we often 2 x adults 1x toddler and a portion of left overs out of a lot of the ‘2 adult’ dishes - especially the dishes like risottos. Another example would be getting 4 hotdogs in a ‘2 adult’ recipe.
I also save so much money by going to the supermarket with just ‘lunch’ and ‘breakfast’ items on my shopping list - no impulse dinner buys or crap expensive ready meals.
I’d say give the 65% discount box box a try, because you can’t really loose… if you cancel after that you’ll still have had a great box of meals dirt cheap for a week.

About £150 to £180a week. 2 adults, 2 teenagers and a toddler. Mixture of Iceland, Aldi and Asda. Although I only did a small shop in Aldi last week and was horrified the bill came to almost £50.

BlackKittyMama · 02/12/2022 00:54

We get either 3x Hello Fresh or Gousto boxes per week depending on which I can get a Blue Light deal on at the time. Then it’s around £35-£50 for lunches, other meals, pet food and household stuff we need. 2 adults (+2 cats)

Jennybeans401 · 02/12/2022 04:06

Approx £150 for me and three dcs. Eldest dc is disabled and needs to stay warm so I have our heating on a lot. I've never known a worse time.

TinkyWinkyRainbowHead · 02/12/2022 06:36

We spent just over £100 nine days ago and that was for two adults. That was in Sainsbury’s and Aldi. Looking at what’s left, we should be good for another week 🤞 apart from bread and milk. Might get some biscuits too.

coralpig · 02/12/2022 07:20

2 adults, 2 toddlers (big eaters) and 2 cats
£60-80 a week plus another 10-15 top ups of milk and fresh things

user1487194234 · 02/12/2022 07:22

Spend 200 a week in Tesco
Includes cleaning stuff and wine
Spend 50 a week in Waitrose on weekend treats

thelobsterquadrille · 02/12/2022 07:24

About £75 a week for two adults, a dog and three cats.

Caspianberg · 02/12/2022 07:24

About €120-150 depending on what we already have in and the season. 2 adults and 1 toddler

That doesn’t include cat food or toiletries usually. We very rarely drink alcohol

LaMariposa · 02/12/2022 07:28

£80 a week, family of 4. I use Bother for online bulk shopping, the allotment has done well this year, and we get a weekly Sainsbury’s shop for fresh stuff/milk.
Everything is bought in bulk and then we menu plan.
I used to go to Waitrose and chuck what I fancies into the basket, not anymore.

Loafbeginsat60 · 02/12/2022 07:34

At least £150 a week for two adults and two kids but then adult ds sometimes eats here too.

That's not including dog food (that just he around £50 a month and takeaways probably two a month totalling £60

I can't believe how expensive food is at the moment

Ajaal · 02/12/2022 07:39

Marmee53 · 02/10/2022 23:49

About £60 for 2 adults and a toddler (not including meat).

We realised if we do click and collect from Tesco then we end up spending a lot less especially when using club card deals.

I second this! Click and collect made things so much cheaper. I guess because I could just 'delete' anything that was a bit unnecessary. So now £70 a week for 2 adults, 1 toddler. This includes nappies and wipes etc.
Click and collect helps you to see all the deals available

oddsocksmatchifsamethickness · 02/12/2022 09:10

£25/week
one adult, one child

spaghetti hoops on toast once a day
cheapest stuff from ASDA
one shop from Aldi for fruit and veg
Peppers for wraps, wraps for the freezer, 19p seasoning packets from Home Bargains

Cereal from Aldi and the cheaper crumpets.

We don't have meat or dairy

Lentils and dried beans and chickpeas for our sauces and curries
Cheapest large bag of pasta

Frozen fruit for smoothies from Farmfoods

So £100/month is our average that's our budget. I cook from scratch every day and she has a fruit plate before her processed spaghetti hoops which she loves.

toastfiend · 02/12/2022 09:13

Generally, £100-£120 per week on Ocado for a family of three, includes cleaning stuff and alcohol but we're not big drinkers. I actually find it a fair bit cheaper than Tesco, despite the perception of it as being more expensive.

Decafflatteplease · 02/12/2022 09:20

Far far too much! But we have various dietary needs with DC.

That's for 6 of us.

So it's around £1000 a month which is horrendous!

Made up of main shop, top-up shop, milkman delivery for milk bread and juice plus school dinners. All in around £1000 a month. And no we can't afford it!

Greatbiggoldfish · 02/12/2022 09:31

Now about £180 for 2 adults and 2 sporty growth spurting teenage boys .. this includes everything though including loo rolls , cleaning products etc

Newpuppymummy · 02/12/2022 09:34

Family of 4 plus dog. We usually spend between £80 and £100 a week. Rarely buy alcohol andOnly one meat eater. Includes all cleaning products and nappies though.

Oooooooooooooh · 02/12/2022 09:41

About £170 for approximately 10 days
That's all meals, with no top ups
No meat though
