Private hearing test for child

Hymnulop · 01/10/2022 20:46

Is there anywhere that does private tests for a child? My DD keeps saying she can't hear and it seems genuine (no illnesses and this has been going on for a few months so not just a temporary blocked ear)

Can't be arsed with trying to get a GP appointment then wait for a referral etc, we can afford a private test but no where seems to do them for a child? Any ideas? Thanks

Hi there, yes you can. Try searching Paediatric Audiologist for your local area.

Oopsilot · 01/10/2022 20:53

What area do you live in and what are you typing in?
private paediatric audiologist brings a fair few up in different areas.

Hymnulop · 01/10/2022 21:02

I've done so much googling and nothing comes up. We're in Hampshire.

If you can travel, try the Priory in Edgbaston. I was treated in audiology 👌

Forestgate · 01/10/2022 21:08

I think you can do them online?

3 hours away maybe a bit too far, hoping for something nearer but thank you.

The Portland Hospital in London

aldjaks · 01/10/2022 21:17

Do you have a text service for your HVs? I needed a hearing test for my child, text the HVs. They sent a referral off, had an appointment at the local hospital in 3 weeks.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 01/10/2022 21:19

Yes there are private hearing tests for children however:

There is quite a long waiting list at the moment so NHS might not be much slower

If you have private health insurance rather than just paying privately you will need a referral letter from your GP. Your GP will also know where is best to go in your area.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 01/10/2022 21:20

Call your local bupa hospital

Parkside Hospital in Wimbledon. My son had a test and then grommets operation, we went to see Dr Pepper, he is lovely and I would definitely recommend him. First appointment was at Parkside and then operation at Portland Hospital.
It this is too far, check for pediatric ENT in your area.

Floralnomad · 01/10/2022 21:22

Golden Ears audiology in Fleet , an adult friend used them but I think they do children as well .

ShadowPuppets · 01/10/2022 21:23

How old is DD? We’ve got a couple of concerns about hearing but have been told they’ll test at the 2y 4m check (in Surrey)

Wildlynx · 01/10/2022 21:24

We've found NHS pretty good /quick (we're in your area) but understand that getting the referral appointment may be a pain; my elder child is being monitored but expect he'll grow out of it so debating whether to bother with 5yo who has similar (but not very bad) symptoms.

catbirddogchild · 01/10/2022 21:24

Phone your health visitor Monday am or email them. They can do a referral over the phone. It's really easy to sort out.
Not even a long wait usually in Hampshire.

www.spirehealthcare.com/spire-southampton-hospital/treatments/a-z/tonsillectomy-and-adenotonsillectomy-for-children/

There are some pediatric ENT consultants at this hospital, you can check if they do hearing tests too

Wildlynx · 01/10/2022 21:25

Meant to add my elder one got referral through school test but they've stopped that now hence gp appointment required first...

Wildlynx · 01/10/2022 21:26

And also to add to PP above my HV said we had to go via GP :-/

My daughter is 5.5 years old. I dont think I've seen a health visitor since she was maybe a few days old? Wouldn't even know how to contact them. Her hearing has always seemed fine but something is definitely wrong at the moment. I just so can't be arsed with the GP route. I have a baby too and feel like I'm always contacting the GP for one reason or another with the kids and don't want them to start eye rolling about me seemingly coming up with another reason to contact them (do GPs do this?!) They're always genuine issues but feels like I'm always contacting them. So would rather go private but going into London etc seems an even bigger hassle but I appreciate the recommendations so I can at least weight it up.

I would use the NHS. If your DC does have hearing loss then they are connected into into the teachers who are deaf specialists and who the. connect to class teachers. If you go private and then need to hook back into the NHS system it could take longer.

aldjaks · 01/10/2022 21:36

Not seen a HV for years here either, but we have a very helpful text service which I've used a few times for various referrals without ever needing to see a HV in person. Much quicker and simpler than seeing a GP in my experience, worth looking into if your local authority offers the same.

aldjaks · 01/10/2022 21:37

Also if you don't have the HV option I'd just see the GP, they aren't going to roll their eyes at your child needing a hearing test.

Ours have that text service as they gave me a leaflet about it when I had the baby recently. Would they bother replying if I text it about my 5 year old?! Am I just being silly and should do a GP e consult on Monday?
