AIBU?
Why can’t you have a thread about a thread?
Libre2 · 01/10/2022 14:28
I have been on MN for over 11 years and never understood the rule.
Am I being unreasonable?

It clogs the board for no reason. Discuss it on the thread in question.
DickDarstedly · 01/10/2022 14:31
I always wondered this as well OP. Sometimes it feels like deliberate silencing when a thread really does need further discussion. OTOH I can imagine it would lead to outbreaks of thread spread. I have seen this in the past when controversial threads have been deleted lots of TAATs appear (which also get deleted).
OrigamiOwls · 01/10/2022 14:33
I think because if not people start new threads to make their point, rather then put it on the original thread, which clogs up the boards.
Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 01/10/2022 14:35
Why would you need to? What would you want to say that wasn't either a new thread completely just inspired by the first- so avoiding derailing. Or that couldn't go on the thread?
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/10/2022 14:36
I don’t understand either.
There are so many times a thread includes some stuff I’d like to take further but would be going off on a tangent within that thread. Makes perfect sense to then start another one.
RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 01/10/2022 14:38
I agree OP. There are some posters who seem to draconianly police and report TAATs. Sad baskets!
I also don't understand what's so wrong about resurrecting zombie threads.
I'm guessing both issues have something to do with maximising ad revenue.
Anon778833 · 01/10/2022 14:39
Because everything relevant to the thread can be discussed on that thread?
dudsville · 01/10/2022 14:41
I agree with you OP. Sometimes the thread gets derailed by side but linked debates and ATAAT would be handy.
SpinningFloppa · 01/10/2022 14:41
People are saying discuss it on the thread but I’ve only seen this when a thread is deleted so can’t discuss it on there but then the new thread will be deleted because it’s a TAAT
YellowTreeHouse · 01/10/2022 14:42
Because if it’s a legitimate thread, just use the original.
If it’s a troll thread, there’s no point discussing it.
SudocremOnEverything · 01/10/2022 14:43
Because you end up with a proliferation of threads bitching about aspects of other threads and it all degenerates accordingly.
Blueberrycreampie · 01/10/2022 14:45
Sometimes I would like to discuss a thread that's been deleted.
IncompleteSenten · 01/10/2022 14:48
There are loads of threads that have started with the op saying I saw X on another thread and it made me think of y, let's talk about Y...
They don't get deleted because it's clear that you are discussing a related issue that came up on the thread rather than the thread itself iyswim.
Starting a thread to moan about another thread gets deleted quite rightly. X on such and such a thread is a cow... Is a personal attack.
"Where did troll thread go?" Is giving trolls a thrill. Sad little bastards get the original thrill then get to see umpteen threads asking whatever happened to the poor woman who gave birth to 86 babies and couldn't afford the taxi to the hospital and her husband wouldn't take her cos he was busy naked with the pool boy...
Badtasteflump · 01/10/2022 14:55
On that subject - has the thread about the neighbour doing nighttime gardening been deleted? I was enjoying it 😁
Hopelessacademic · 01/10/2022 15:03
Is this a thread about a thread about a thread???
A TAATAAT?? 🙀

I'd read that though!

I mean, I agree I don’t see what’s wrong with them! Sometimes a thread inspires other thoughts on the same subject that might derail the original thread.
Goldpaw · 01/10/2022 15:08
I've seen TAATs that continue the duscussion of a thread that's reached capacity but where the OP doesn't come back to make a new thread. It's a shame when they're deleted.
WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 01/10/2022 15:17
A thread is deleted for a reason. Because the mods want it gone, or the OP does. Why start discussing it again? Around 7 threads were started the other week, asking where that thread went discussing the strange noises in the garden. OP asked for it to be deleted. (IMO because people were questioning her and doubting her,) so it went, with a weird explanation, like 'the OP has real life concerns' or something like that. Still, people kept demanding to know why it had gone, and every thread started about it got deleted.
KimberleyClark · 01/10/2022 15:55
I also don't understand what's so wrong about resurrecting zombie threads.
It depends on the thread. Resurrecting a thread asking “is this dress ok for a wedding” is a bit pointless if the wedding was six months ago.

It’ll disappear in a minute - you watch.
It’s not really the threads that have been deleted that I’m thinking of - it’s others where there is a bit of a side issue that would derail the original thread.

I suspect that often the poster asking for advice on her local Nursery isn't so much interested in the answers now her dc is 12.
