Why is it worse in the U.K.

Thatsaturdayfeeling · 01/10/2022 09:46

I’m British but not in the U.K. at the moment. Where I am, we also have food price increases and petrol was v high for a while, but it’s all not to the extent as the U.K…why is the U.K. in such dire straits compared to other places?

Why is Brexit causing Dutch inflation to run at 17%?

Exactly. It's farcical how people still blame Brexit when the rest of the world is suffering the same. I can't believe people are THAT clueless and deluded.

Incrediblebuttrue · 02/10/2022 19:26

It is ALSO Brexit. Why is that so hard to understand? There is more than one cause.

Incrediblebuttrue · 02/10/2022 19:28

And what do you mean "still"? The dire consequences of Brexit are predicted to last decades - according to JRM who supports it! 😂

Lily4444 · 02/10/2022 19:28

In short,

Housing is worse as the government completed deregulated everything so many new houses are shoddy built and often don’t pass fire safety regs. For renting landlord can now charge whatever they want and have very few rules they have to follow.

Same with electricity which now means companies can charge whatever they want.

Then brexit which now means tariffs on food (and basics everything) because we have no industry to grow or build anything in this country any more. Thank you Thatcher for that one.

They’ve basically stopped funding the healthcare system, social care and schools and are treating them as if they’re businesses.

Basically this government (which has been continuously in power since 2009) has run this country so far into the ground that life expectancy is actually falling

AHG1234 · 02/10/2022 19:42

Shockingly inept Conservative government!

KentishMama · 02/10/2022 19:54

I think it's the cumulative effect of Brexit, particularly bad management of COVID (have other countries spent this much on Track and Trace?), poor preparedness for this energy crisis with too low investment into renewables for many years, and now utterly shocking fiscal policy.

Or in short: 12 years of Tories.

Missingpop · 02/10/2022 20:22

Because The British Government is full of two faced pompous pricks who don’t give a nats fart about the average bloke on the street; they don’t care that our elderly are scared to death about the rising energy prices or that low income family’s cannot make ends meet now so how they will cope now the energy prices have gone up no one knows; families queuing at food banks is becoming a very common sight; this is not how it should be in 21st century England; but due to mismanagement by consecutive leaders our government is a total shower of shit full of back stabbing knobs.

Mishka3085 · 02/10/2022 20:23

The answer is : The conservative Party.

Callingallskeletons · 02/10/2022 20:31

Because we’ve had Boris and his band of merry wankers at the helm for so long.. now we’ve got Truss the new puppet in charge and she’s managed to totally fuck the economy even worse despite only being in “power” a few weeks

Stolengoat · 02/10/2022 20:32

I'm currently in the Czech Republic and can tell you it is more expensive here, diesel for example is 35p a litre more.

ocelot1 · 02/10/2022 20:38

Thatcher started privatising our energy and created a made up 'market' with marginal cost pricing, and Tories have continued to privatise in all areas. The EU copied Thatchers system. We are just 'ahead of the game'. The EU has also followed this, but we, in the UK have been very right wing (although seemingly caring on some things, so have appeared to be less right wing than we are - Blair is a case in point.
He also privatised but at least he also knew how to balance that with
building growth through people which spreads the wealth ). We haven't invested in our resources at home for 13 years - ie, many of our services are now owned by people in other countries, so the money is constantly leaving our country. 'The Market' now is the defining power in our lives. The power of deciding what is good for our country is placed in the hands of 'the market'. Which is why people were so upset and so voted for Brexit. without realising that unless we stop the Tory ideology, the same problem exists. Thatcher was liked by tories as she really went for it. Fully went for their ideology. As Liz Truss is doing now. There is no balance, towards people's experience, no regulation to solve the issues that come up, no decision making by experts. just the market. And, yes, we are an island. Having stolen resources for an empire of time, somehow we have not got to grips with the idea of voting in a government who know how to get the best out of our own country.

SuzanneAnderegg · 02/10/2022 21:01

Brexit and 12 yrs to many of Tories. They only care about the rich and don’t even hide it anymore.

Angrywife · 02/10/2022 21:08

Because it's the UK and large companies rarely care about anything but profit

mellongoose · 02/10/2022 21:40

Covid and Putin. It's the same Europe wide. HTH.

keffie12 · 02/10/2022 21:44

It started 6 year ago when Cameron gave a referendum, which was won by a tiny majority and on lies. Its been going downhill ever since.

The vote should never have happened. If it had to, a 60% line should have been given.

I would be here all night giving the low down. I'll sumarize it as when a populist lieing government get in things are only going to get worse.

This is the culmination which will take years to clear up

To quantify, no Covid19 and Ukraine have happened, which having helped matters .

However Brexit is the underlying problem of why it's worse here

I can’t even read this, no paragraphs!

The Covid responce cost the Gov approx 300 Billion GBP. That's a conservative (small 'c') estimate. Some say, at least 500 Billion GBP.
This has to be paid for, somehow, as the Gov itself does not have any money, only what it raises from us, the taxpayers.
The Gov can raise taxes, and cut spending, but that itself will not be enough, and there is a school of thought that too many tax rises, etc will depress growth.
The Government have borrowed the money, and using Quantative Easing (printing money) aka inflation, to pay for it.
This is made worse by the fact that the Lockdown did not just happen here, but around the world, so will even affect countries such as Sweden, which did not lockdown.
The energy crisis, of course, also feeds into inflation, and all this is made worse, by the Russian/Ukraine War. I think Germany will be worse re energy as so much of their gas comes from Russia.
Some of the effects of the Russia/Ukraine War (such as grain shortages), will probably be worse next year, when existing stocks around the world get low. Other countries, such as Canada may be producing more, but this takes time.
The energy crisis has been forcast for over 20 years. I have been reading articles about it for many many years and BOTH Labour and Conservative Governments are to blame; reason being that Governments think short term, not long term,

PurpleWisteria1 · 01/10/2022 10:27

Have you seen the cost of food in other places. Chicken in Canada for example is something like £15 for 4 breasts.
Agree with previous posters- have those moaning visited many places in the UK and properly visited places abroad- not just a weeks holiday.

I have lived in other countries. Eating out, house prices and now utilities are much more expensive here.
Some countries have some food more expensive than the Uk and some foods cheaper.

I have just checked online and diesel is more expensive in the UK than in the Czech republic.

Spectre8 · 02/10/2022 22:23

The world economy is screwed, the dollar is being propped up but its been declining for decades. There are bigger issues at play causing all of this. As others have said other countries are not doing any better either.

Our media is not helping either, alsways constantly running with negativity, stoking the flames, lets not forget the strategic pictures of empty shelves causing panic buying.

Liebig · 02/10/2022 22:25

Limits to growth.

Britain isn't special, it's just ahead of the curve. Wait until the contagion from the UK economy collapsing spreads to the rest of the global economy. Then you'll see some fireworks.

Yabu

i have lived in uk, uae, Malaysia in the last 10 years, and have family in HOng Kong, plus visited Singapore and Japan. It is not worse in the UK, but no where else have I seen this bizarre attitude of bashing your own country and constant hysteria and agitating to tear everything down.

This....

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 01/10/2022 09:49

Because our government don’t give a fuck about our country as a whole and only what they and their cronies can make from it.

Very true ^

Stolengoat · 03/10/2022 02:07

Well I saw it with my own eyes, do you have your own agenda?

user1477391263 · 03/10/2022 05:18

I think the energy situation here is really bad because we are highly reliant on gas but got rid of most of our gas storage over the decades.

Most other western European countries have been cutting back on usage and gradually filling their gas storage up over the last few months, in preparation for winter. We can't really do that.

Heat pumps are using for heating in many very cold parts of Europe; if your house is very well insulated, a heat pump is enough. But UK houses are poorly insulated. Another thing that no progress has been made on (well, not enough progress, anyway).
