Hotel gate - couple refused to pay their Wedding Bill shamed on Social Media

A hotel in my area 'The Townhouse Durham' was ripped off by a couple. The couple are trying to avoid paying there bill by complaining.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11257679/amp/Battle-Buffet-Town-House-Durham-shames-newlyweds-bill-dispute.html

There is a huge backlash against the couple with people sharing their own problems they've had with the couple - they seem like a pair of scammers.

HOWEVER

I'm finding the Hotel a BU now, they seem to be really enjoying the drama and stirring the pot with updates on social media in a vendetta against the couple, it looks cheap IMO. If their is a complaint in place, perhaps libelous and a breach of confidentiality?

Thoughts?

They said that the reason they wont pay is the buffet was only out for 30 minutes, the venue has posted CCTV all time stamped over several hours showing thats not true.

2 photos

The photos show a member of staff setting up at 9.10 ie no guest present and then another photo little more than an hour later with guests present.

what does this does exacrly?

are You suggesting they put it out in a separate room to the wedding, left it half an hour then let guests in?

Its high likely that the guests were in the same room as the buffet tables so then putting it out IS when it was available to guests.

Even if that's true, it's not the till-midnight buffet the couple are claiming they paid for.

What I am saying is that the two photos are not “proof” by any stretch of the imagination

Youdoyoutoday · 30/09/2022 17:06

Since when can you pay for wedding stuff after the wedding???

Since you are incompetent

FridayTheThirteeth · 30/09/2022 17:11

Scammers should pay - why should they get away with it.

Shame the scammers

but the photo do clearly show they where lying about the times... thats why they where posted.

They said they took the buffet away at 10pm and there for less than an hour but the photos show the buffet being set out at 9pm and open and still being enjoyed by guest at 10.22 instantly disproving the entirety of that claim.

That’s not true.

Depends on how they do weddings and the set up. For people who the run the hotel and know the hotel, it maybe obvious that it’s all in the main function room and so the guests would see.

Your imagination doesn’t stretch very far really.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 30/09/2022 18:01

The photos aren’t just photos they actually have video footage of the entire buffets from
the set up to the removal.

They are disputing the times however the hotel can disprove their claims with their internal video footage.

PersonaNonGarter · 29/09/2022 22:59

Nah, pay the bill or get your photo in the windae.

Damn straight

StrawberryRed · 29/09/2022 23:04

Yes I feel its all a bit unnecessary. If they scammed then name and shame however they are now leading a public witch hunt.

They shouldn’t have to, they should have just pai their bill.

Maverickess · 30/09/2022 22:27

I'm pretty sure there's rules/guidelines about how l

How long food can be left out on a buffet, especially for cooked food or seafood etc.

OvaryActions · 30/09/2022 22:52

"So where they live… they are the only residents? 😂"

"Yeah I live in this 'area' too... we are one of the biggest counties in the country with a populartion of 527,000. its a tiny city smaller than most towns but still the immediate area (not the whole county) has a population over 7000.

Might aswell just post my address as clearly saying I live in the area is outing lol."

Well no, OP obviously doesn't think simply posting which county she's in is outing as she posted it under a name change...not outing.

However coupled with other posts she may have made could make her more identifiable to people she knows. It's not difficult 🤦🏽‍♀️

Either way even if that's not the reason we can all name change as and when we please, none of either of your business.

FirestarterJackie · 30/09/2022 22:55

I agree with you Op I think the hotel are going too far with this now

They are literally baying for blood and every tom, dick and harry is coming out of the woodwork with stories, true or not

I commented on their fb story last night and told them that they are getting a lot of media attention for all the wrong reasons and going down the legal route would be far more classy

My problem with it is, it is now verging on bulling and whilst the couple have welshed on a bill, they are getting their actual lives RUINED for it

I have no sympathy for the hotel after the way they have handled it, they are goading people into bulling ..it is like a pack of baying wolves

MaxPi21 · 01/10/2022 17:52

It's regrettable that this is happening but I tend to lean towards that they brought this on themselves.

I deal with the general public and although we have programme after programme about Builders, plumbers, architects etc from hell. I assure you a clients from Hell programme would be enlightening. Lots of tradesmen wouldn't take part I'm sure, got to keep ratings and the rest in good stea.

ILoveYoga · 01/10/2022 18:03

Anyone who has held events knows that there is corkage. They may not have agreed either it, but it is customary. I’d be very surprised there were no agreement/contract. I think the hotel will now be sure to charge in full in advance from now on with only incidentals afterwards.

Also think it ok to name and shame. We know nowadays that journalists scour social media for content and this couple should not be surprised it was picked up by the papers. They ought to pay up.

Exactly 😁😁😁😁

balalake · 01/10/2022 18:13

Two wrongs (if you consider the hotel to be wrong too) don't make a right.

Groovee · 01/10/2022 18:29

This couple appeared to have had two venues booked days apart, then with short notice cancelled one and all the different suppliers of things claiming a parent had died. Then the small businesses are glad they had a lucky escape.

it seems like karma caught up with a pair of scammers and they have form for calling the police when confronted.

The hotel should get payment but maybe move on now.

jewishmum · 01/10/2022 18:42

There is no need for social media, just go the legal route and it will be sorted.
The whole social media drama is very unprofessional and also embarrassing considering the spelling and punctuation is so poor from a so-called manager.

Hbee88 · 01/10/2022 18:55

If they couldn’t afford to get married… how about waiting? I’ve never understood the rush to tie the knot before it’s financially feasible. The whole bloody point is that it’s for life, so why not wait and save until you don’t have to wait until payday. Just looks rushed and cheap.
