AIBU?

Bum prints “bumpkins” unnecessary and a little creepy?

This is a new thing apparently and being offered at ceramic painting places. I think it’s undignified for babies and the detail in the prints are pretty clear and I find it weird and a bit creepy anyone would want to display their child’s bottom in this way.

I’ve just seen one shared on Social Media & wondered if it was actually a safeguarding issue! A bit of investigation shows that it’s ‘a thing’…I know nursery workers change the kids’ nappies & wipe their little bots but painting them? I’m staggered that so many people are doing this but especially freaked out that some of these people aren’t the kids’ parents.

I meant to say, it was done at the child’s nursery on a piece of paper, so I’m assuming by a nursery worker. No idea if permission was sought first. You’d imagine if you wrote that sentence out you’d realise how wrong it all sounded 😱

more crap on the trashheap of pointless consumerism

This in spades.

Like every other parent, I know that my children have the world's sweetest little bottoms, but literally no one needs this.

I currently have a little baby and I love her cute little bum. No desire to stick it in paint, squish it on clay and display the weird results.

I despair about some ceramic painting places I really do.

Many of them are run by people who haven't had sufficient training in pottery production.

I was teaching a pottery class this evening about applying glazes to pots and it's required they wear gloves when doing so. And yet pottery painting cafes put the glazes or underglazes directly on to babies hands, feet and now bottoms.

Give me strength

Urgh, hideous. That’s enough internet for me. Goodnight!

We did these at home last night with our baby on some pieces of card. Really don’t see the issue! He thought it was really funny, lots of smiles. I sat him in a pumpkin too for some photos, is everyone going to froth at the mouth about that as well 😂

Personally, I wouldn’t want to do it in a public cafe and I know baby groups were doing them but I wasn’t comfortable with doing it around strangers. His Dad and I however see his bum all day long 😅I will be going to get a Christmas bauble made in one of these cafes though… I don’t see the harm in wanting some memories. He won’t be little forever!

That’s creepy and horrible. Very undignified too.

Honestly, some parents need a good shake, going along with this nonsense.

Whether it’s stuff like this or Drag Queen Story Time, there’s a horrible new pattern developing…

I mean, I wouldn't do it myself, as I would be worried about the paint causing irritation, but I don't think it's that terrible.

Every day is a school day here. Why did I Google blumpkin?

I'm asking myself the same question 🤢

I need an eraser for my brain. 😂

Why do you want a print of your child's bottom? Confused What are you planning on doing with it?

I drew leaves on it to turn it into a picture of an actual pumpkin and I put the date on it. It will go in his memory box along with some cheerful Christmas things we make out of foot prints. I think it will be nice to sit with him when he’s a bit bigger and talk him through all the things we did and made together. If he doesn’t want it in the future then he can by all means throw it away!
