Bum prints “bumpkins” unnecessary and a little creepy?

This is a new thing apparently and being offered at ceramic painting places. I think it’s undignified for babies and the detail in the prints are pretty clear and I find it weird and a bit creepy anyone would want to display their child’s bottom in this way.

Very weird.

TBH I don't get the foot/handprint thing either. Until DD was born I'd only ever heard of this in the context of making a memento of a baby who'd been stillborn. I can absolutely see why you would do that, but I find it hard not to think of that association.

You really never heard of kids doing handprints or footprints in paint? Not saying I don't believe you , I'm just surprised, I think they're cute .

Lunabun · 29/09/2022 21:20

Yes I find it very odd and uncomfortable too!

User1435 · 29/09/2022 21:21

Going against the grain I kind of love them! I wish I'd had one of my daughter when she was a baby! Her tiny bum was so cute!!

ThisShitsBananas · 29/09/2022 21:24

My baby has the cutest bum in the entire world so would actually love one of these 🤣

DorritLittle · 29/09/2022 21:39

I never even got round to an extortionate clay handprint.

Chloefairydust · 29/09/2022 21:39

Just googled blumpkin … 🤢 … Why, just Why??

FrangipaniBlue · 29/09/2022 21:46

Pottery place in my town has been doing those for about 4/5 years.

Bloody hideous!

greenritta · 29/09/2022 21:52

I thought I was well versed on the hideous things that might happen between people but I was wrong. (I Googled blumpkin and I'll share the knowledge)

Thesearmsofmine · 29/09/2022 21:55

Yeah I’ve seen these around for the last couple of years. I can’t say I like them.

ThreeRingCircus · 29/09/2022 21:58

They're fucking awful. I mean, most parents think their babies bottoms are cute but actually painting their arse then sitting them on a cold, ceramic plate doesn't seem like it would be the most fun trip out.

Late stage capitalism at its finest, depending on your viewpoint it’s ‘innovative’ in finding an untapped market, or yet more crap on the trashheap of pointless consumerism.

Sums it up perfectly.

I’ll bet the parents buying this also did gender reveals and cake smashes.

CrapBag39 · 29/09/2022 22:04

christ on a bike why??

chesterelly1 · 29/09/2022 22:25

Just saw this exact post on FB and said to DH "is it me? Who the fuck wants to get their baby's arse out in a cafe and paint it orange?" I've not been to this cafe for a while and there used to be completely separate eating and painting areas but I know after Covid the parties that booked stayed at 1 table to paint & eat. I hope at least that's changed and they've got a designated bare bum table.

Of course I've heard of kids doing handprints and footprints in paint. But that is something you do with an older baby/toddler who is enjoying the whole idea of the paint and the mess and the fun of it.

Taking a ceramic print of a baby's 'first' prints is something I associate with mementos for stillborn babies. I know a lot of hospitals will offer to do this, and it is hugely valuable. But, because of that association, I wouldn't like to do a print of a living newborn baby's hands and feet.

RaininSummer · 29/09/2022 22:46

Every day is a school day here. Why did I Google blumpkin?

LondonQueen · 29/09/2022 23:39

Creepy af!

Meatshake · 29/09/2022 23:43

Bit too close to the old photocopy your arse, drunk office parties trope for me!

CountingCrowns · 29/09/2022 23:46

yanbu, they’re horrible! they just remind me of shit smeared all over a bum

OldTinHat · 29/09/2022 23:50

Awww I think that's a bit cute!

Actually getting on a bike is the only valid reason to take an imprint of someone's bum! 😂
Well bike saddles to be more precise. There are devices where you sit in something like memory foam to measure the distance between your sit bones to decide what size saddle fits you best. I don't think that applies to babies though and it's temporary!
Taking an actual cast of anybody's backside and displaying it is downright weird. Can't imagine how the subjects of this "art" will feel if their parents still have them on display once they're old enough to realise what it is.

ChagSameachDoreen · 30/09/2022 02:25

Ugh. Why is everything nowadays a blatant attempt to dissolve children's boundaries?
