How do you find out if you win? I wanted to win

I think they’d contact you. I do think it’s a con though. Unsellable houses in awkward locations.

cultkid · 29/09/2022 16:33

I wouldn't mind that one in Kent it's soo handy
Urgh no missed calls either

What about the cars?

Omaze is a for profit organisation, isn’t it? So where are they getting their profits from?

I agree they’re offering unsellable homes in awkward locations. Cost of running the homes is high too. Probably got a cheap deal on an house that couldn’t sell on the open market.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 16:43

The houses are very grand but many seem to have problems with them. Like this one in Kent has a lift going through the cliff which has been vandalised in the past and that's the only way in. The Cotswold one was in a valley that flooded. Etc

They all would cost a fortune to maintain and couldn't sell in the normal way that's why Omaze could buy them cheaply.

Found this out just recently and now I won't buy tickets again. I'd stick to the National Lottery or Premium bonds!

cultkid · 29/09/2022 16:58

I suppose you're right I just thought the odds were better than the lottery! What a doofus
My husband has been laughing at me for getting my hopes up
I only spent £10 but I feel like a Wally

Spending £10 on this scam does kind of make you a Wally

dustofneptune · 29/09/2022 17:00

I entered the Cornwall one, then noticed the same trend other people were noticing in the comments sections of Omaze's social media. It's almost always already-wealthy people that win. Reason likely being, they are buying a lot of entries. I haven't entered since.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 17:02

That's unkind and it's not really a scam as obviously people do win the houses.

It's just the houses are not worth as much as they say. Could be a millstone etc.

From now on I'll stick to lotteries with cash prizes.

cultkid · 29/09/2022 17:04

I was going to rent it out I don't even know why I thought about it so much

OP posts:
ComtesseDeSpair · 29/09/2022 17:06

To be fair, if you spent £10 and did win, you’d only have to sell the house for £20 to make a profit on your winnings! It’s no different to “wasting” money on any other lottery where you have a strikingly unlikely chance of winning anything, let alone a massive sum.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 17:10

Well dustofneptune it is the same with any lottery. Each ticket has the same chance though. How would you suggest it works? Limited the tickets each person can buy? Obviously they won't want to do that as it might affect their profits.

Omaze tickets are expensive , true. I'd recommend Premium bonds, where you never lose your 'stake' and nobody is allowed to have more than £50 k in there.

To who?

The houses have major issues with them

cultkid · 29/09/2022 17:10

I've never ever won on premium bonds and I've got £300 in there

With £300 in there of course you're not going to be likely to win anything

where did you read about the vandalised lift? I've not seen that anywhere? I read about the flooded Cotswold house and there was something wrong with one of their other houses too.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 17:18

But you might win still on your bonds and the £300 is still there if you really need it back.

You could keep adding to it with the money saved from not buying Omaze tickets!

Most lotteries (all I suppose) the chances of a big prize are really really low. But it's a nice dream.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 17:24

@goldfinchonthelawn it was just from another recent thread on AIBU called 'Omaze House draw' . Don't know how to link as I'm on my phone. I think the poster that said that found it in local news maybe for Kent? It might not have happened recently. That thread only finished on Tuesday though.

CheezePleeze · 29/09/2022 17:34

This is the 3rd thread about Omaze that I've read in the last few days.

Weird.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 29/09/2022 18:06

I really really wanted the Cornwall one OP, so I understand. I would have lived in it (already live in Cornwall) and had daydreamed away about what it would be like. I think I spent £20. Obviously I knew I wasn't going to win, but I really really wanted to. If force of will could have done it then I would have! Grin

If anyone knows what's wrong with the Cornwall one that would be great - might make it a relief not to have won rather than a disappointment!

(I don't think the running costs would have been too bad, so not that - it has a GSHP)

earsup · 29/09/2022 18:15

A couple who live a few roads from me won one of the big houses....could be last month..??....i did buy few tickets but sometimes spend £10 on the other house draws, different site, as higher chances....just sell it cheap if you win..!!...or let it out etc...

Omazing indeed

Carpedimum · 29/09/2022 18:23

Just to dispel a couple of myths: The one that was in Cheshire a while ago, was in a highly sought after area, not OTT in size or style, on a relatively ordinary road. The chap that won appeared not to be wealthy (though admittedly appearances can be deceptive). Also, yes Omaze is a for profit company, but they do raise funds for well-run charities. I bought a ticket for the Cheshire house because it was raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

cultkid · 29/09/2022 19:19

I wish I won
So well marketed
