Nottingham or Bristol to live - moving away from London

Hi

My partner and I will be moving away from London with the next two or so years. We have family in and around both Nottingham and Bristol. We like both cities.

Does anyone have any idea on where the job market is better ? I work in HR and my partner in construction. I'm keeping a look out on LinkedIn for suitable jobs for me just to get an idea of the market for both. I'm so used to London and there being so many adverts posted daily, whereas that's not the case for either cities.

I basically want an idea of the job market in both and any opinions of which is better for our careers.

We have a list of other pros and cons for both cities in other aspects.

Thanks

Thanks @ChangedNameAgain99

@HomerDancing if you spoke to an agency like Hays that would help you both. As they have HR and Construction and Property divisions plus offices in both locations.

Large parts of Nottingham are rough.

Honestly you both work in careers that are really buoyant, so you would be fine in either city. I prefer Nottingham though and it is cheaper to live there.

Bristol is VERY EXPENSIVE now. Nottingham has a bit of a name as gun city. Probably unfairly.

Bristol (my home town) is very expensive. I know a lot of people who commute into the city from places like Weston-super-Mare, Burnham on Sea Chepstow or Gloucester on a daily basis.

My feeling is that you’re so well connected in Nottingham that your job prospects - whilst not necessarily better paid - will be much greater so you’ll have far more opportunity for the employment you want. Honestly you can get anywhere here, ranging from city to city to gorgeous green spaces. I think it’s underrated.

I found it hard to get a job in notts after uni but wanted to stay there. I'm biased as I really love the city, think parts of it are beautiful and always felt safe so for me the cost of housing is unbelievably low for what you get .

My sister went to uni in Bristol and lived in Clifton and while I also like the area I couldn't believe how expensive it was (and surrounding areas like Bath) and would resent paying near London prices to be there.

I've lived in both- I would pick Nottingham but a nice area like west Bridgford or Wollaton or mapperley Park

We didn't much like Bristol - in fact we moved to Bath within 16 months. My H is from Bristol area too- found it scruffy and hard to get around and to live in a nicer area you had to live quite far out as Clifton was full of student housing as was Redland
It's each to his own though and depends what kind of house you want/need/ irritated to compromise on- it's not cheap for anything that nice.

I think Nottingham city centre is much nicer if I'm honest , transport much better and housing is way cheaper-

My advice for either city would be don’t move to Clifton 😆

Nottingham is great. Job market wise I don’t have much of a clue other than to say there are always opportunities in my line of work. One poster has said it’s dull, blah and grey - couldn’t disagree more, especially having spent time living in the north west where it rains bloody constantly. By comparison it’s dry and sunny here the majority of the time and we had a great summer. Bristol is nice but the £££ would put me off - though proximity to some lovely parts of the coast and South Wales would be great!

Nottingham/ Nottinghamshire is lovely , great villages around the city and the schools and heath are great

Er no. I live in Nottingham and have lived in Notts all my life. The schools and hospitals are dire.

True. And housing in the nice areas (like West Bridgford) is very expensive.

I just sold my 3 bed terrace in a good part of Beeston for £265,000. There's been a lot of investment in the area. It's near the University of Nottingham. Nice area with beautiful parks close by and the canal.

Ruddington is really nice with the country park close by. West Bridgeford is fine but definitely overpriced. If I could live anywhere in Nottingham it would be the Park.

Further out is Newark which has reasonable house prices.

I did my masters at Nottingham in the 00’s. The town centre is lovely but when I was there I was the gun crime capital of the UK. I grew up on a rough council estate in Bristol but Nottingham is the only place where someone’s attempted to mug me in broad daylight!

That was absolutely years ago. It’s as unfair as saying Bristol has massive issues with drugs. Both cities have rough parts - goes without saying. No doubt Bristol has some lovely areas, as does Nottingham - but they will cost you more to live in. Schools in Nottingham are a mixed bag but you just have to plan for that when looking for somewhere to live.

We went to Bristol recently. Was shocked at the graffiti! It was everywhere. All over doors shop fronts, even high up on buildings by the roofs. Like someone had just sprayed the whole town. I wouldn't be happy if that was my front door it wad big big graffiti too. Looked disgusting .

Bristol is host to one of the largest graffiti festivals in the world. Upfest runs a weekend every year where internationally renowned graffiti artists come and paint sides of buildings and shutters (with consent of the owners!). It does attract a fair bit of unwanted tagging, but the professionally done graffiti has really brightened up the city.

OP, I don’t know Nottingham and I don’t work in yours or your partner’s areas of work, but the job market in Bristol is generally booming. There are a lot of big construction projects coming up and so I think employment in the construction industry will remain high.

plus, Bristol is a fantastic city. There are places where house prices are lower, but still great locations.

I live in Lincoln and love it. It's so much nicer than Nottingham but not too far to drive.

I know Nottingham and the surrounding areas very well as I grew up down the road. And have a lot of family in and around.
