To go to the hairdresser in these circumstances?

DH and I have had Covid since 19 September. Still testing positive. I cancelled a hair appointment I had and rearranged it for this coming Saturday. By which time we’ll have been isolating for 13 days. Am I safe to go to the hairdresser? Masked obviously. As a courtesy I would let the salon know.

If you feel well just go, don't bother with a mask and don't tell them. We need to move past this covid thing!

Jules912 · 29/09/2022 12:21

That's more than 10 days, which is how long you were meant to isolate when it was mandatory so no issue. First time I had Covid I tested positive for 3 weeks, started going out once the 10 days were up.

KimberleyClark · 29/09/2022 12:22

Thanks both. Will go then!

Well we're not going to "move past it" if people who are still positive are going into enclosed spaces, potentially with other vulnerable people, without wearing a mask or even telling them!

Midnights · 29/09/2022 12:41

You can test positive for ages whilst not actively shedding the virus and being infectious - at that length of time I would go and get my hair done, unless I was physically unable to.

Maybe a year ago not now. I agree with PP, move on, get over it.

mamabear715 · 29/09/2022 12:44

@Badbadbunny I agree. I shall be hermitting as much as possible this winter. Obviously going out, but nowhere indoors with lots of people / no airflow, & will be masked.
#Sits back & waits for insults..
Not bothered - I will be flu & covid jabbed & trying to protect mine & others' health. I would take a dim view of anyone who doesn't do the same & try & protect vulnerable people.
Btw - my relative drives buses. He is expected to now work while Covid positive. Yep, in chillier weather, windows closed, & a bus full of people, otherwise no pay. Tell me how that makes ANY kind of sense.

dgirluk · 29/09/2022 12:48

For those saying just get on with it... I have to have surgery in 2 weeks, with a general anaesthetic. Guidance is no anaesthetic for elective surgery for 7 weeks after a negative test. So if I catch it, it delays my surgery by 2 months minimum. Which has already been delayed since the spring because I had covid......

It's just not as simple as "get on with it" unfortunately

Even if we back to 6 months of March 2020 type isolation, it will never ever go away now. Unless we did that, and closed borders forever and lived in a UK no travel isolation, its never going back to 2019. Never. I'm saying that as a biologist who knows more about viruses than the adverage person on the street. I'd advise to quit waiting for the impossible. It's like hoping that someone will discover the cure to death.

Moving to China might be your closest bet to zero covid.evrn they can't achieve it

@Carrieonmywaywardsun no it fucking isn't. People can test positive for weeks after they've had it. It doesn't mean they're still shedding the virus and infecting everyone they come across.

GucciPearls · 29/09/2022 13:07

Don’t tell them just go

Yes let's just all move on - the virus will just get bored with the lack of attention and peter out.

bananaboats · 29/09/2022 13:10

As long as your feeling ok I would go. Wouldn't bother telling the salon or wearing a mask.

MarshaMelrose · 29/09/2022 13:13

I would say nothing but I'd wear a mask just in case.

Absolutely none of this means we should not try to protect ourselves and others, or behave unethically by failing to inform them and giving them the choice. You should be absolutely ashamed of yourself @PinkStickleBrick.

@Badbadbunny well I wouldn't even know if I had Covid as I will not test any more as we need to move on. There's no requirement to test either. I wouldn't go anywhere if I felt awful anyway so as not to pass on bugs before Covid and the OP feels fine now. Common sense.

girlmom21 · 29/09/2022 13:37

Even at the start we only isolated for 10 days OP so you'll be fine.

My MIL has had her cataract op cancelled 4 times because staff have been off with covid. My OH has had several of his chemo sessions cancelled. That's what happens when people don't care whether they're spreading it anymore.

Well I hope you wouldn't go to a healthcare setting if you had a suspicion you were covid positive? Or do you really just not care about others??

Terriblethirtytwos · 29/09/2022 14:18

When I had my baby the consultant told me that she was still testing positive for covid on day 12 but had been told to come into work so there she was.

I think that's what happens when people are testing more than necessary, actually.

Way more people are now using covid as an excuse than are actually hugely affected by it.

mamabear715 · 29/09/2022 15:44

🙄🙄🙄 you can literally catch anything from anywhere. More likely to catch a sick bug which could equally kill some than covid which barely kills any especially after all the jabs people have now had. Life goes on, those that are still fearful of what is essentially a lesser version of the flu now should remain at home whilst the rest of us get on with life. Dont like it? Speak to Liz Truss. If i have covid, even if i feel unwell i still have to go to work to get paid. Rules changed and set by the government not myself. We are not even required to test anymore. Move on.

Are you going to pay more tax so vulnerable people can stay at home? It'll cost the taxpayer a fortune if healthcare workers have to go out to people's homes for medical interventions rather than them going to dentists, opticians, GP surgeries, hospitals, etc. What about vulnerable workers, are you going to pay more tax to pay them benefits when they can't go to work because no one cares about simple precautions anymore? For huge numbers of people, it's not them being fussy - lots of people have REAL medical issues which make them vulnerable and the vaccines often don't have much of an effect for some people with medical conditions. It's such a shame that so many people can't be arsed to do pretty simple things and take pretty simple precautions - I thought Covid would have driven home the importance of basic precautions, but clearly not!
