Ebay fraud

Cantthinkofausername01 · 28/09/2022 23:27

Sorry guys, posting here for traffic

So last week i sold an item on ebay, nearly £700 worth. Buyer received and signed for the item.

Today I get an email stating the buyer has opened a dispute with their bank for an unrecognised transaction. Ebay asked me to upload evidence of it being delivered, which i did, i sent them the picture of the signature on royal mails website and its signed by 'Peter' which is the same name on the ebay account.

How likely is this person to win their claim? Ebay have the funds on hold until it's resolved, but I don't know how long that will take and I'm really worried. It was a mobile phone I sold and I have barred it now so they cant use it

If it has been signed for and the name is the same as the account holder then I am sure you will be OK.
Bloody eBay. There are so many dodgy people on there trying it on it makes me sick. It may take a while to get your money which is annoying and off putting. Hope it gets resolved for you

NotJustAnybody · 28/09/2022 23:59

Could be something as simple as the buyer used the wrong bank account.
My ex bought something off Ebay the last time he was here and left his bank details on my Ebay/PalPal account. Many weeks later I purchased something and just pressed 'pay'. Turns out the money went from Ex's account not mine! He obviously blocked it. It was a long winded saga but it did eventually get sorted.

I bought a pair of Michael Kors boots size 7 in good condition from an eBay seller with good feedback.
They were not Michael Kors, badly worn and a size 3. Seller refused to take them back. eBay found with the seller. I escalated the claim ans took it to paypal and got nowhere. Boots went to charity. sometimes eBay is shit

Cantthinkofausername01 · 29/09/2022 07:08

I don't think I'll ever use Ebay again! Like I say I've barred the phone now but that doesn't help the fact I'm still £700 out of pocket.

I really hope this doesn't go in the buyers favour. I've done nothing wrong

Except you have barred the phone now so they could argue that you haven't sold them a working item

How did eBay side with the seller? What was the reasoning? It can't be as you describe no way. You had evidence

I did sell him a working phone then he tried to steal from me. Theres no way on earth I'm letting him have a working phone when I'm £700 out of pocket. Besides, he can't say he doesn't recognise the transaction and then complain to ebay the phone doesnt work because then he would be admitting to fraud

Fair enough OP, he can't claim he received a faulty phone when he is trying to claim he never received a phone in the first place.

Sneaky bugger he is

It will go in your favour.

I had a seller post me an item which I didn’t receive. However, tracking said ‘delivered’ so that was the end of it.

It’ll be fine.

JonSnowedUnder · 29/09/2022 10:16

I've found Ebay to be quite fair, although I know people complain they always side with the buyer. As long as you have the evidence it was sent and recieved they should find it your favour.

People who try these sorts of scams are so low, they know you're an individual and not a huge business who can absorb the cost. Not that I'm saying anyone should scam large businesses either but scamming this way just seems worse!

YouSirNeighMmmm · 29/09/2022 10:23

Ebay is only for business sellers who can afford to be defrauded by one in ten buyers, and for prviate sellers who are willing to accept that they might find themselves out of pocket having effectively given the item they are selling to a scumbag.

That is the reality now, and will remain the reality.

The worst I have heard of is someone buying a brand new car headlight, leaving positive feedback, cracked it during fitting, deciding they don't want it becaue they broke it and sending it back used and cracked. ebay sided with buyer. DESPITE POSITIVE FEEDBACK HAVING BEEN LEFT.

Do not sell on ebay unles you are willing to be left out of pocket and fully aware that you've been scammed and that you have used a platform that cares literally ZERO about you.

I don;t want to be too negative, but I honestly wouldn;t be surprised if ebay sided with him, I honestly wouldn;t.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 29/09/2022 10:35

Try the phone line op. Apparently it isn't easy to find but dh as a seller found great support and got his money . Buyer didn't collect from the Post Office then claimed item hadn't arrived and wanted a refund!

jackstini · 29/09/2022 10:36

What has the buyer said when you contact them?

LuckyLil · 29/09/2022 10:52

Whatever happens just learn that if you sell high value goods on eBay make sure it's buyer collects only.

Louloudaisy2020 · 29/09/2022 11:09

Hmmm I'm not sure.

I have NEVER won a claim as a seller before, ever.

I flat out refuse to sell on ebay these days as despite sending items 'signed for', the buyer raises a dispute for not receiving the item (the 'oh it's not at my address must have been incorrectly delivered' and then using a false name to accept it) or claiming it was damaged or not as described. I've never won. Because for damage, you cannot prove without a full macro inspected 360 that the damage wasn't there before...

It's ridiculous. Ebay and Paypay pretty much always favour the buyer. At best you can hope that as you have proof, that ebay will support both sides or request that the buyer seeks to get the money back from their bank rather than them.

This is why from now on, as much of a pain as it is, I only sell on facebook market place for cash on collection from a local supermarket car park (never my house).

Let us know how you get on, hope it all works out.

Cantthinkofausername01 · 29/09/2022 11:21

The thing is he isn't saying he didnt receive it, he saying he doesnt recognise the transaction on his bank account. Hes signed for it with royal mail in the same name that is on his ebay account 'peter'

And cash on collection. If they pay another way first and refuse a refund and refuse to pay cash then cancel the transaction. Pay via paypal, collect, then claim the seller didn;t post... oldest trick in the book, and the seller can never prove they posted!

AgnesNaismith · 29/09/2022 11:25

Never sell phones on eBay! Similar happened to me, I sold a phone, packaged in the original iPhone box and saw photos of it arriving. The buyer claimed the box was empty and eBay sided with them. Actually broke my heart at the time as we really needed the money. Some buyers are ruthless cunts.

CathyorClaire · 29/09/2022 11:25

Ebay don't always side with the buyer.

I had a claim for an item not delivered. Tracking proved delivery but eBay left a hold on my account. I used the chat function and the hold was overturned that day and ebay chose to refund the buyer themselves.

What I didn't realise was the address was a collection address and I'd been opted in to offer it without ever being notified. I've now turned off that setting in my account because I had a second one within a few days that was a ballache to resolve.

It sounds like your buyer is using a bank chargeback, OP. You might be best off discussing it with the bank as well as ebay.

I wouldn't be able to discuss it with the bank as it's his bank. He paid the funds which are on hold in my ebay account until this is rectified😔

Don't sell anything on eBay with a value of over about £50 you will probably be scammed and left out of pocket. All the stories I hear about eBay they seem to side with the scammer every time. You would have been better off going down to CEX or cash converters and taken £100 less than you could sell on eBay.

Winceybincey · 29/09/2022 12:30

I’ll always advise to never sell anything of value on EBay. I know many who’ve been out of pocket because the buyer has pretended that something of low value had been put in the package instead of the item they ordered. One person I know stated they received a brick instead of a laptop. another person I know sold a phone and the buyer stated it didn’t work. She told him to send it back and she’ll refund. He did just that but had removed the parts that he wanted and sent her an empty shell. She had no choice but to refund him.

the problem is is there’s no proving it either way and so in those instances eBay will side with the buyer. some sellers do send items of low value instead of what the buyer paid for and that’s given fraudster buyers the idea.

no idea what he’s hoping to achieve with his bank though. I’ve not heard of that one.
