Ebay fraud

Cantthinkofausername01 · 28/09/2022 23:27

Sorry guys, posting here for traffic

So last week i sold an item on ebay, nearly £700 worth. Buyer received and signed for the item.

Today I get an email stating the buyer has opened a dispute with their bank for an unrecognised transaction. Ebay asked me to upload evidence of it being delivered, which i did, i sent them the picture of the signature on royal mails website and its signed by 'Peter' which is the same name on the ebay account.

How likely is this person to win their claim? Ebay have the funds on hold until it's resolved, but I don't know how long that will take and I'm really worried. It was a mobile phone I sold and I have barred it now so they cant use it

The thing is he isn't saying he didnt receive it, he saying he doesnt recognise the transaction on his bank account. Hes signed for it with royal mail in the same name that is on his ebay account 'peter'

He could be pretending that a fraudster has used his bank details. In that case the bank will investigate and as there’s proof he bought and accepted the item it will get no where.

another scenario could be that a fraudster really has used his account to buy it, and set up an eBay account in his name, using a different address. If that’s the case it shouldn’t affect you, his own bank will refund him and you will keep your money.

I would think that so long as your proof of postage matches his address, and this is the address that eBay provided you with, then you should be okay.

I find ebay increasingly unreliable and a poor performer of late as a sales agent and tend to use other ways of selling/buying.

Its favoured sellers in its dispute resolution when I buy and genuinely didn't receive (by taking a photo of a completely different house and door as "proof" of delivery) and favoured buyers when I've sold. I stopped selling on it when I sold 3 pairs of Stella McCartney second hand running leggings in good condition for £25 and the seller then complained because one had a small loose thread and wanted me to refund her for that pair only. I refused, because they were second hand and I had ticked the "no returns" box on ebay, and they still sided with the buyer.

I find both ebay and Facebook very "American" in their terms and conditions and very poor at resolving the issues that should be resolved while cracking down too hard on perfectly innocent things.

Have you actually entered the tracking into ebay or just sent a photo of the signature?

It's all moderated by computers. Humans won't look and make a human decision on the outcome so any photos you send won't be seen by anyone.

Also for £700 id send them a letter before action and if no response to that then go through a small claims court www.gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money

Thankyou for this i will keep that in mind.

I spoke with Ebay earlier and they said if he had made a claim through Ebay it would be closed already because they can see he's at it basically but because it's through his bank i've got to wait on them making a decision. They said if the it doesn't go in my favour they will appeal it. I just can't be bothered with all this hassle!

I wouldn't be able to discuss it with the bank as it's his bank

You can dispute it with your own bank providing them with supporting documents.

Ebay have my money on hold so my bank wouldn't do anything, the money hasn't been in my bank account yet

Just received an email from ebay stating that the dispute was found in my favour and no further action is needed! So relieved!!

Thats great news OP! You have been quite lucky here, though. A favourite scam on ebay for phones is for the buyer to open "not as described" and return an empty box. They will win this type of case every time.

Glad its worked out for you :)

Cantthinkofausername01 · 30/09/2022 07:09

It's all been dealt with very quickly also! Case opened on the 28th and closed by the 30th! I was expecting this to go on for weeks

How did eBay side with the seller? What was the reasoning? It can't be as you describe no way. You had evidence
Unfortunately eBay explain nothing in these cases. I bought an item and it never arrived. I had a tracking number which clearly showed it hadn't ever been put out for delivery and there was an issue with the my address not being correct. I had an online conversation with the couriers who acknowledged they hadn't tried to deliver it and had returned it to the vendor. The vendor confirmed they had got it back because the address wasn't clear. Did Ebay take my side? Nope. On the couriers website the item was listed as 'carded', a reference to an internal process but Ebay decided that in spite of the evidence that 'carded' meant a delivery had been attempted...
I got the item eventually thanks to the vendor and would have complained to Ebay but at the time there wasn't a process to complain and I wouldn't be surprised if there still isn't. They're a law unto themselves.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 30/09/2022 10:54

I had this, they had even left me positive feedback and Ebay still withheld my money. It took about four months for me to get the money.

Glad it's been resolved in your favour!

The name having signed for it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I had something delivered to my parents house in my name. The name that signed for it was "Hunter" but I wasn't even there and my dad signed for it.

I'm in the middle so something at the moment, I have bought and sold in good faith and never had a problem until this week.

The seller is threatening me and it's put me off using these on line market places

Yeah I will never use Ebay again that's for sure!

I hope you get it sorted

Pleased for you OP that was lucky from my experience with eBay I refuse to use them now also.

I have been scammed twice, first time as a buyer , received a faulty item. Contacted the seller they bent over backwards to help or so I thought. It was a heavy item so they arranged to get it picked up for me (silly me thought they were being kind). Then refused to refund me as they said I failed to return it. I had no proof of tracking because they organised it and I could not prove I returned it. eBay ruled in their favour.

Second time, I sold an item. The buyer claimed it was faulty, eBay said I had to pay for a prepaid label to get it back. When I got it back parts were missing from it buy the buyer. eBay refused to listen, and refunded the buyer in full plus initial postage and I still got charged for return postage!
