AIBU to think this tweet surely can’t be true, and if it is then it it’s a disgrace! What has this country become?

Secondary School can’t afford to turn the heating on so students are told to bring blankets…

I remember having to wear my coat in school in school, and having to jump up and down during lessons to get the circulation going. 1947

PeekAtYou · 28/09/2022 16:58

I think that this is fake news based on how robustly my kids schools enforce rules around taking off coats, boots and hoodies before you enter the school building. It's one of those schools where you need permission to take off a blazer so can't imagine them asking kids to start wearing extra. (thermals are allowed for PE but that's it)

Ihatethenewlook · 28/09/2022 16:58

I’m not sure why so many people are thinking this is unbelievable tbh

littleducks · 28/09/2022 17:02

When schools had windows open for COVID they were saying to wear layers and bring hats, scarfs and gloves in allowed wearing coats. So I can't see this being that much of a leap.

Because schools would be advising wearing layers, wearing coats, wearing hats and gloves ... ahead of bringing in blankets which are going to be awkward to transport round school. Plus how many home don't actually have blankets?

Fairyliz · 28/09/2022 17:08

Surely the students would be keen on this they are the ones banging on about global warning and they are the ones affected by it.
Or are they like most people want others to change their ways?

No one is doubting that schools might be turning down/off the heating to save money, all sensible people know that's likel but equally what sensible person thinks a blanket is the go solution?

AntlerRose · 28/09/2022 17:10

Im quite amused that no one seens to doubt schools might not be able to afford heating, but the response of blankets seems unlikey.

WhatNoRaisins · 28/09/2022 17:11

I'd have thought relaxing rules around the uniform would be the first thing to try. I was really impressed with how the schools let people where cooler clothes during the heatwaves, mine wouldn't have in my day!

Pottedpalm · 28/09/2022 17:12

Reminds me of my early schooldays; not enough classrooms in school so one class was in the local church clubhouse and another in the Miner’s Welfare. We loved being ‘down the Miner’s’ as the first hour or so was spent playing movement games with our coats on inside to keep warm until the old coke stove got going. The elderly teacher who had been called out pf retirement made us toffee .. 🙂

gogohmm · 28/09/2022 17:12

Last year they kept the windows open due to covid, was really colder

ChimneyPot · 28/09/2022 17:12

My teens wore Oodies and some others brought blankets last year because covid regulations in Ireland required all classroom windows and doors be kept open even on the coldest days.

toomuchlaundry · 28/09/2022 17:13

It maybe fake news but not too far off what will be happening in schools across the country. Heating may not be fully turned off but it will be set lower than normal/only on for shorter periods.

Pixiedust1234 · 28/09/2022 17:14

I say fake news too. Schools didn't allow blankets during the two covid winters when they had windows and doors open so why now??

Use your brain 🙄

Circleoflife2057 · 28/09/2022 17:17

In the tweet it doesn't actually say the school told them to bring blankets. It's the parent saying they will have to bring them (to be dramatic). That's how I read it. And I don't even believe they are turning the radiators off anyway.

HappyHappyHermit · 28/09/2022 17:21

Two of the schools I worked in did allow a fleece blanket to be brought in during Covid if needed when it was really cold. No idea if this story is a true one, but not all that far fetched.

Same in the UK. They were allowed to wear fleece tops.

Paigeycakey · 28/09/2022 17:26

SwordToFlamethrower · 28/09/2022 16:51

Why would it be fake news? This is literally what we are being told to do if we can't afford heating. Why wouldn't schools have the exact same problem with regards paying for heating?

We need to see a link. What you do in your own home isn't comparable to school.

Agree about the coats not been allowed on school "you won't feel the benefit when you go outside".

Surely letters home would be sent to wear thermals before this drastic blanket thing and we are not even in Oct yet. January is usually the coldest too.

fyn · 28/09/2022 17:33

We run a community centre and our electric price is currently £1.50 kWh for electric, luckily in contract for gas for another year. I’d anticipate they’ll go out of business by the end of the year with out intervention from grants. I can easily see why a school can’t afford it. The electric price has gone up from a few thousand a year to an estimated cost of £18,000 for the next year.

Bumptious22 · 28/09/2022 17:44

MarshaMelrose · 28/09/2022 16:49

Teachers aren't going to be wanting kids messing around with blankets, and even worse, messing around under blankets. Personally I'd want to actually hear confirmation from the school before I believed it.

😆

Noteverybodylives · 28/09/2022 17:45

They definitely won’t be allowed to bring blankets for a million reasons.

But I don’t doubt that the schools won’t turn the heating on as secondary schools barely have the heating on as it is.

They will probably be allowed to wear coats, hats and gloves like last year, although behaviour was absolutely awful because of it.

canyouextrapol · 28/09/2022 17:48

I call bullshit. Can you imagine kids doing science practicals draped in a blanket.

FacebookPhotos · 28/09/2022 17:53

This sounds like something a teacher said to a class as a joke and someone took it seriously. I can definitely see schools telling kids to wear coats, hats, scarves etc though. And when you’re sat down working those things don’t work as well as outside. It’s going to be a very difficult year for lots of schools and kids.

lanthanum · 28/09/2022 17:55

I think a lot of schools will be turning the heating on less, and asking kids to wear extra layers as they did when all the windows were open (there will be a problem if there's a big new covid wave and they need the windows open too), and I expect the blankets was probably a flippant response to a kid saying "but we'll get cold if the heating isn't on".

x2boys · 28/09/2022 17:58

Ihatethenewlook · 28/09/2022 16:58

I’m not sure why so many people are thinking this is unbelievable tbh

Because I'm just imagining my tall ,broad nearly 16 year old son dragging his duvet around with his all day ,people would be tripping up etc.
