...to believe that Rupa Huq's ‘superficially’ black comment aimed at Kwasi Kwarteng is utterly reprehensible?

Apparently Kwarteng doesn't sound 'black' enough. I wonder if Ms Huq will now demonstrate for us what a black man should sound like? I also wonder why the , er, shadow equalities minister Anneliese Dodds didn't step in and reprimand her colleague?

YANBU and she has been suspended so obviously the Labour Party agree. What more do you want to happen?

FarmerRefuted · 28/09/2022 09:47

Why would her colleague need to step in when the party has already decisively stamped on it and suspended her?

bakehimawaytoys · 28/09/2022 09:47

I honestly couldn't give a shit. There are so many other things to get worked up about over what one politician said about another.

SleeplessInEngland · 28/09/2022 09:45

Ah thanks. I didn't see it.

She was suspended after she made her vile remark. Dodds never said a word at the time.

Do you suppose she'll lose the whip permanently? Personally I doubt it.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 28/09/2022 09:55

It was wrong. She has been suspended. The party has acted promptly and not tried to defend her.

an example to the Conservatives as to how these things should be handled

Us to discuss it?. What it means. Does Labour have a problem with racism anti-Semitism, that sort of thing. Uncomfortable subjects possibly, but I wonder if such a "so what" attitude would be assumed, had a Tory made the same sort of remark about a Labour MP?

OP posts:
FarmerRefuted · 28/09/2022 09:57

Time will tell if she's permanently suspended but, again, it's not down to her colleague to step in on disciplinary matters.

I know one thing though, if this was a Conservative MP their party would be defending to the hilt and insisting that no one cares and we should all just move on as they did with countless shitty things the government have said and done (let's all remember the many racist comments made by the likes of Boris Johnson).

berryfull · 28/09/2022 09:59

och I don't understand these sort of threads. Trying to damn a whole party because of the mistakes of one person. obviously because it has Political advantage. trying to distract from criticism of the government. trying to continue the smears of the past few years .

read the Forde report

HMSSophia · 28/09/2022 10:00

Look at the fucking plank in the Tory party's eye before complaining about the mote in the labour partys eye

Gwlondon · 28/09/2022 10:01

She thought it wouldn’t be reported and that she was amongst like minded people.

Or she (clearly incorrectly) didn't see anything wrong with what she was saying, so didn't worry about it being reported because she didn't believe there was anything to report.

Wishyfishy · 28/09/2022 10:06

It’s awful but Starmer reacted quickly and I am impressed at that.

The view she seems to hold is awful but I reckon not that unusual. You aren’t really a minority unless you confirm to her ideals and hold similar views to her.

But who has a 'so what' attitude? She made the comment on Monday. The Labour Party removed the whip from her yesterday. If memory serves it took the Conservatives a week or so to remove the whip from Chris Pincher even after he had resigned and apologised.

I agree and the speed with which she was dumped shows she was wrong

How could they have suspended her BEFORE she made the remark??

of course AD didn't make a remark at the time. There's protocol for these things. She's not her mother or teacher FFS

I’m glad the Labour Party took swift action.

I don’t know enough about the protocol whether her colleague should have spoken up in the moment. If I was at work and a colleague said something like that I certainly hope I would say something. But that might be more difficult when someone is giving a speech. I don’t know what the reaction was in the room (a gasp of horror?)

TeaKlaxon · 28/09/2022 10:14

I voted YABU.

Not because the comments were acceptable. But because of your attempts to pretend that there is any indication that her views were being tolerated or accepted, when the whip has been suspended and Keir Starmer has been clear he regards the comments as racist and unacceptable.

It's not for a Shadow Equalities Minister, who is responsible for the party holding the Minister for Equalities to account and setting out Labour policy on Equalities - not responsible for individual disciplinary matters within the party - to say anything.

I am sure if Annelise Dodds were being interviewed and were asked about it, she would have said similar as Angela Raynor, Keir Starmer and others who were interviewed yesterday.

I agree with this.

I don’t at all support what Rupa Huq has said. I think Labour was absolutely right to condemn her comment so swiftly and clearly, not only because her comment was unacceptable but also because their stance sends out a clear message that they will not stand for any kind of racist behaviour, which I think is the right thing to do.

I also think though that, if one of the Tories had made a racist comment (as they have done in the past), that it’s likely they would be defended by their party and not have the whip removed. Obviously I can’t say anything for certain, as we don’t know how this current government would react to a comment of that nature, but I’m just going by the actions of previous governments.

Sunder Katwala, who chaired the event and challenged Huq's comment at the time, has tweeted to state that Dodds had left the event when Huq made the comment.

Starmer has publicly stated this morning that the comment was racist.

What do you want?!

sponsabillaries · 28/09/2022 10:27

Dodds was reportedly not present when the comments were made.
