To think weighted blankets are restricting and uncomfortable

So I jumped on the fad and got a weighted blanket. One of those filled with glass beads. I got the heaviest one I could find. However I don’t understand the rave reviews they receive. It’s like being crushed as you sleep! am I doing something wrong? Is it meant to be comfortable??

You don't like them. Many people do. It's no more complicated than that.

FarmerRefuted · 27/09/2022 21:43

It's supposed to weigh no more than 10% of your body weight to be comfortable but its horses for courses, I have one DC who loves theirs and another DC who hates theirs.

Always4Brenner · 27/09/2022 21:46

I brought a k but way too heavy couldn’t lift half the time I might try a 4kg next time

Sorry 9kg.

Quveas · 27/09/2022 21:47

I bought one for a gift for a friend who has always slept badly. She says that it is a miracle and she has never had such great sleep in her life. So I guess it's down to the individual.

MammaWeasel · 27/09/2022 21:48

I adore mine (ASD) and my grown up dd loves hers. Dh and my son feel like they're being crushed under them. Everyone's different . Sell it on, I imagine they hold their value to an extent.

sugarfreesyrup · 27/09/2022 21:49

I was certain I’d love one and lay under my friend’s one just to check and it’s lucky I did cos I HATED it. I felt like I was trapped

ilovepixie · 27/09/2022 21:56

I bought one, I hated it my partner loves it!

Unanananana · 27/09/2022 21:59

I have a 9kg one and it changed my sleep quality for the better. I am a light, restless sleeper and it mitigates some of the fidgeting. DP hates them.

Its horses for courses.

LilacPoppy · 27/09/2022 22:01

You have to get them made for your specific weight.

ofwarren · 27/09/2022 22:02

I had a 9kg one and loved it. It's gone now though because my DH threw it in the bin rather than washing it after our DS was sick on it Angry

Runningintolife · 27/09/2022 22:02

Depends on your sensory needs

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/09/2022 22:03

Hmm interesting. I’m a very restless sleeper, I wonder if one would help with that?

Kite22 · 27/09/2022 22:03

Well they are not supposed to be a fashion fad, they are for helping people cope with their sensory differences. If you don't have sensory differences, then you wouldn't need a weighted blanket, in the same way you don't wear glasses unless you need visual support, or splints unless your limbs need support.

(Sorry to hijack to post the most inane of comments!)

LilacPoppy · 27/09/2022 22:01

You have to get them made for your specific weight.

It’s recommended not to have one that weighs more than 10% of your body weight from a safe point of view doesn’t impact comfort.

SnarkyBag · 27/09/2022 22:05

Weighted blankets work well for some people but not everyone responds the same way to every sensory experience so chances are for every person that benefits there will be someone that loathes the sensation.

Floydthebarber · 27/09/2022 22:06

I love mine. I pull it over my head when I have a migraine and it is wonderful. Dh is an awful sleeper and really rates it when he is on nights.

VinoDino · 27/09/2022 22:06

I sort of like mine. I kick it off. Took it off but missed it so it's back on. Would rather have it on than off.

Notonthestairs · 27/09/2022 22:06

"Well they are not supposed to be a fashion fad, they are for helping people cope with their sensory differences."
Exactly.

Sunnyqueen · 27/09/2022 22:07

You are supposed to have one that is 10% of your body weight not just the heaviest one you can buy that's not how it works. Also it will not be pleasant for some people because every one is different anyway and primarily they were designed for autistic people because the weight and pressure is soothing. They make a huge difference to how my child sleeps.

BattenburgDonkey · 27/09/2022 22:07

Some people like them, some people don’t, there’s nothing odd about it. Why’d you pick the heaviest one you could find?

Treea · 27/09/2022 22:09

I love mine, I have autism and the crushing, trapped, squished feeling has always helped me sensory wise to feel more grounded, so a nice heavy weightes blanket really helps with that.

SnarkyBag · 27/09/2022 22:10

Just to be clear not all autistic people will like or benefit from them either again not everyone autistic or otherwise have the same sensory needs.

liveforsummer · 27/09/2022 22:10

Kite22 · 27/09/2022 22:03

This - if you don't have specific sensory needs then you'd be unlikely to need/enjoy one. And the heaviest you can find is likely too heavy anyway. It's real not a fad, just a tool to help people with a specific need
