To think it's really difficult to get a job

Derrymare · 27/09/2022 12:59

Just that really
My partner is looking and has applied for so many jobs but there are so many people after the same job.
He is only been offered warehouse jobs through agencies involving heavy lifting and he has joint issues so not really suitable and they are just minimum wage.

It's difficult to get a job that isn't utterly shite, yes.

So, so, so true.

I had to work in a pub after a had a career break. It took me 4 years to find a job that uses my degrees, professional qualifications and over a decade of experience.

He was a shoemaker in his home country

That’s excellent. Is he highlighting the skill, the patience etc needed for that? That’s going to be good on a CV. Did he deal with customers?

Obbydoo · 27/09/2022 13:39

Don't take any notice of the figures LinkedIn gives. It counts every time someone clicks a link but that doesn't mean they actually applied. I wish they'd take it off as it puts people off applying.

Is that true??? I've stopped myself applying for lots of jobs because I've seen 50+ candidates and thought what's the point!

AffIt · 27/09/2022 14:03

Timpsons would be a great shout - they have a very equitable and open recruitment policy, they're a terrific firm to work for (a friend of mine worked for them as a student and said it was one of the best jobs he'd ever had - he's a lawyer now!) and he will have transferable skills!

Take a look at their recruitment page.

Yes prawn I know he needs something lightweight due to some joint problems.
He is 46 and only ever worked in Pakistan

Surely his previous work in Pakistan should go on his CV? Just because it's not UK work doesn't mean he won't have acquired skills.

Saying he has no previous employment is untrue.

Octomore · 27/09/2022 14:08

I find it bizarre that he's obviously a skilled tradesman (shoemaker is skilled), but you don't appear to be trying to bring this out in his CV etc.

Derrymare · 27/09/2022 14:14

He is well presented and very willing I believe he would do well in many jobs but somebody has to take him on to see this.
We are west midlands.

Octomore it's in his CV

missbipolar · 27/09/2022 14:15

How long has he been out of work for? If he's not very good on a computer but also can't do manual labour jobs he's going to struggle massively. Can he try for some volunteer work in the mean time and maybe look at some computer courses?

snowspider · 27/09/2022 14:15

I second the suggestion for volunteering in a charity shop, he could pick up retail skills and be in a position to evidence new skills. Also Timpsons is an excellent idea unless his joint problems are in hands and fine motor skills affected. If he can still do things with hands then eg dry cleaners where they do repairs.

missbipolar · 27/09/2022 14:16

And yes LinkedIn count how many people click apply as the application number regardless of if they actually did apply

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2022 14:18

Derrymare · 27/09/2022 13:30

Okay he is pakistani and just got his leave to remain along with work permission. He doesn't drive yet and no previous employment. CV was hard going.

He's 46, with no previous employment in the UK. He doesn't drive. CV isn't great for the british labour market. His English is not the best. And he's got physical health requirements which rule out physically demanding jobs.

The problem here is you / he think he can enter the job market at a wage above minimum wage. Given his situation, its not realistic.

The big tell here is you've admitted its YOU not him who has applied for the jobs. That alone says he's not got the ability/experience to do a hell of a lot of jobs which will involve some kind of input into a computer system / navigation of social situations in a UK setting.

The reality is you have to start at the bottom and work up if starting out fresh in the UK. Lots of well educated and professional immigrants who have a skill set which is more sort after than shoemaker struggle when they first start here.

He should be applying for these jobs - if only to get some practice. Even practising reading and writing in English is value. You aren't doing him a favour in applying for him if he is seeking a job above min wage.

Yes it sucks. The problem isn't getting a job. He could absoluetely get a job if he needed just any. Its never been easier to get any job. The problem here is going for a job that others are applying for and he's always going to come in as one of the weakest candidates.

It doesn't look like you have a tried applying for hospitality jobs - thats where he will find something...

candycaneframe · 27/09/2022 14:19

Depends on sector and how desirable your skills are

I could quit tomorrow and be in another well paid job in a couple of days

I have a skill, that's in shortage and a lot of experience, I'm regularly headhunted.

For those that are low skilled it is harder as you're competing against many others for low skilled roles that anyone can do.

madasawethen · 27/09/2022 14:26

How did he end up in the UK with no skills or anything? I have degrees and skills but I couldn't just rock up in another country.

His best bet would be to mingle in his community for job leads.

purplecorkheart · 27/09/2022 14:36

What is he actually doing to find a job?

twoandcooplease · 27/09/2022 14:38

You can get someone to look over his CV and make amendments they think might be stopping him finding work
My DP just phones an agency for labouring shifts when he needs work and that's it. His CV is really outdated and irrelevant

'Hey my name is x I'm needing work for 2 weeks in (location) I am qualified in XyZ but happy to do anything over £16ph'

AchatAVendre · 27/09/2022 14:41

Its much easier to get a job if you have skills. You said he was previously a shoemaker, so are you in an area where there is work in the leather industry locally? e.g. Walsall.

Derrymare · 27/09/2022 14:53

Great suggestions thank you

Around me the hospitality and care sector are crying out for staff. My friends in professions such as law and accounting also can't recruit staff, even the lower grade admin jobs are going unfilled. Might be completely area dependent.

I recently qualified in AAT and I can’t find a job in any sort of accounting role at all. Even the low paid, basic ones. I’m in the SW

DoDisDenDoDat · 27/09/2022 15:42

Several jobs in the Midlands with Timpson:

Blueeyedgirl21 · 27/09/2022 16:55

Was just going to say Timpsons ! They’re great to work for

catfunk · 27/09/2022 17:01

Op, are the applications obviously coming from you? That would put me off as a recruiter.
Lack of physical ability and poor English writing rule out most manual labour, hospitality and desk jobs - coupled with no recent experience not surprised he/ you are struggling. I think he needs to think outside the box.

WatchoRulo · 27/09/2022 17:04

YANBU there are loads of vacancies but often a load of really daft hoops to jump through to get them.

MintJulia · 27/09/2022 17:06

There are more advertised vacancies than people claiming out of work benefits for the first time since the 70s.

If he can't drive and can't do physical jobs, what about working in a pub? Lots of jobs in hospitality at the moment.
What qualifications does he have? What work did he doinPakistan?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/09/2022 17:11

I have every sympathy OP but also have to ask why would it be easy to get a job? Struggles with the language, no qualifications, not physically fit. You rule out near on every sector!
