To suggest something to do with your £400 from the government towards your fuel bill

shufflestep · 26/09/2022 20:45

If you happen to be in the lucky position (as we are) to not need the £400 from the government towards your fuel bills, and to think that the government has been totally immoral in the way they are handling the cost of living crisis, can I suggest that you donate the £400 to the fuel bank foundation? We heard about it via our local council on Facebook and they give grants to those struggling on prepayment meters. As a registered charity we were able to donate the £400 with gift aid, so more than the £400 we will be given will go to aid those who really need it.

you first OP

Confused isn't that kind of... the point of the thread?

Thanks OP, good shout.

wonkylegs · 26/09/2022 22:13

Already done this and decided to do this as it was announced and encouraged ILs to do the same.
We have been lucky to be on a fix until Oct 23 and also have solar panels and a battery so have very low bills for the foreseeable
I think for many though the added inflationary pressures on mortgages, food etc means that many who thought they could do this, may have to rethink.

EntertainingandFactual · 26/09/2022 22:14

No. I generally hate the way donations are spent by large charitable organisations.
So much waste and I’m not convinced that the money reaches those most at need.

I prefer to support local initiatives but understand that everyone has the right to do what they want to do.

you first OP

Op already has 🙄

It's a good idea, I can't afford to as on benefits and a prepayment meter that seems to be eating electric but I don't know why people are getting so arsey at the suggestion. I hadn't realised there were fuel banks

so they're on here to humblebrag about it? got it.

Rightsraptor · 26/09/2022 22:18

I'm with EDF and they've emailed to say it'll be paid directly into my bank account.

Sadly, I need it so won't donate it but thanks for flagging up this idea, OP. Some will be able to.

Kite22 · 26/09/2022 22:18

Winnietheshite · 26/09/2022 21:04

Brave of you to assume I have £400 in my bank

The OP specifically said

" If you happen to be in the lucky position (as we are) to not need the £400 from the government towards your fuel bills, and to think that the government has been totally immoral in the way they are handling the cost of living crisis, can I suggest that you donate the £400 to the fuel bank foundation? "

which is pretty clear to me she isn't talking to those who don't.

I can't believe the number of posters struggling with the concept that, if they are saving £400 off their fuel bills, it will leave them with £400 more in the bank than if they weren't saving it Hmm

EntertainingandFactual · 26/09/2022 22:19

No @SausagePourHomme. The OP is telling people that this organisation exists.
I for one had no idea.
I won’t be doing it because
a) I’m skint
b) Don’t like the way large charitable organisations operate
But, nothing wrong with spreading awareness.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/09/2022 22:20

🙄

SausagePourHomme · 26/09/2022 22:20

it's £400 more because our bills are doubling. it's not spare money ffs.

SausagePourHomme · 26/09/2022 22:16

Oh take the stick out your arse, plenty of people won't know about fuel banks

Are you really so bitter that you have to put a downer on someone who's donating it to those worse off?

allboysherebutme · 26/09/2022 22:23

I don't think you get it in cash it will just come off your bill. X

"Are you really so bitter that you have to put a downer on someone who's donating it to those worse off?"

I am if their first act after donating is to pop on mumsnet to let everyone know what a good deed they've done.

Read the room. I'm not donating a penny of it until I see what my bills are like over the winter. I am going to need it.

maddy68 · 26/09/2022 22:25

Maybe pay your fuel bill?

Surtsey · 26/09/2022 22:25

SausagePourHomme · 26/09/2022 22:20

For most people I agree, but there will be some for whom £400 is peanuts. They could easily donate that much to a charity helping those in fuel poverty.

CasaDelSoot · 26/09/2022 22:26

This sounds a great idea,

There's something I don't understand though. People are saying their bills are going down because of the rebate. I thought we were told our bills were going to rocket in price, like over £1000 more a year so the rebate was to help towards this.
But I hadn't thought we'd actually be paying less.
Have I misunderstood this, anyone know?

Well the op isn't aimed at you then is it!

gogohmm · 26/09/2022 22:29

We are donating ours to a local energy support scheme run by the food bank. We are getting £67 a month discount to will donate the equivalent amount

This. ^ The OP (and a few others) can dress it up as help and information, but it definitely comes across as a humblebrag.... '

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/09/2022 22:31

And aren't some posters LOVING rushing on here to tell us how THEY have donated their moneeyz to the people in need. ??? !!! 🙄

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/09/2022 22:32

🙄 Well if its a humble brag I'd rather read that than all the threads bitching about people on benefits getting the cost of living payment

Textboxmm · 26/09/2022 22:32

My DD which has gone up to 3 x the monthly amount, briefly will only be 2.5 x the amount as the money is being given straight to the energy company. The energy company reporting record profits.
You’re looking to the wrong people. We shouldn’t have to give to food banks.
I’m afraid I don’t have £400 spare to give to anyone, but if I did I would give it to my DPs for heating.

Mojitoo · 26/09/2022 22:32

so they're on here to humblebrag about it? got it

Jesus.

The OP IS passing on useful information, which, judging by much of the thread, is new news to many, and welcome.

You don't want to give? Cool. Why tf you need to carry on bashing the OP is baffling.

I didn't know about it and I'm happy to donate now I know about it. There is a lot of fucking miserable shit going on right now, and this thread is not one of them.

yes so instead of quadrupling they'll just double

it really seems like poor counsel to be encouraging people to donate this money in October when we could have a hard winter ahead.

SausagePourHomme · 26/09/2022 22:33

not even october, september!
