To suggest something to do with your £400 from the government towards your fuel bill

If you happen to be in the lucky position (as we are) to not need the £400 from the government towards your fuel bills, and to think that the government has been totally immoral in the way they are handling the cost of living crisis, can I suggest that you donate the £400 to the fuel bank foundation? We heard about it via our local council on Facebook and they give grants to those struggling on prepayment meters. As a registered charity we were able to donate the £400 with gift aid, so more than the £400 we will be given will go to aid those who really need it.

Brave of you to assume I have £400 in my bank

OP has made it clear said that this is an idea for people who are quite comfortably off. If you haven't got £400 to spare, it's obviously not targeted at you.

I also don't get how people don't seem to realise that the direct payments to the energy company will mean that they don't have to pay as much, so the equivalent of the amount that they 'save' can be passed on - in one lump sum or monthly - to those in need, IF they are fortunate enough not to need the government subsidy and wish to help those less fortunate.

gamerchick · 26/09/2022 21:26

You don't get 400 quid paid to you though.

Getting fed up of reading this suggestion me. It's not the first thread someone says to donate it.

If you want to donate 60 odd quid a month then crack on.

worriedatthistime · 26/09/2022 21:29

Great if you can but I can see why the goverment gave to all as its a lot cheaper to
Implement than to means test it
But like anything if you can afford to help others , give to charity then yes please do

Pikafuckingwho · 26/09/2022 21:32

Can I ask a question? Eon put my bill down but I’ve put it back up in the hope that I will bank the credit in my energy account. Will that work?

TheChosenTwo · 26/09/2022 21:35

Dh suggested at the weekend we donated it to the food bank which is what I did this morning.
Hadn’t ever heard of this OP, thanks for sharing. Although many won’t be in a position to do so, it’s really helpful to share these things because there will be people who can.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 26/09/2022 21:35

Depends on your supplier. Mine are paying £66/67 per month back into my bank account each month after they get my direct debit. Annoying as I would rather they just credited it to my bill as I expected, but regardless, some people will be getting the money paid directly to them.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 26/09/2022 21:36

Sorry, that was in reply to @gamerchick

FayeGovan · 26/09/2022 21:36

Good call op

Octopus said I could put mine back up if I wanted. I don't see a reason to as my direct debit is already calculated to cover my usage and rates are capped for two years so no reason to overpay.

Charity is plastering over the cracks, we need the govt to step up and govern on behalf of all of us.

There's also the petition to remove VAT on domestic fuel which is getting no traction and costs nothing. Anyone who lives in the UK can sign it, its on the Petitions and Activism board.

Op that's a great idea for those that don't need the discount. I'll pay half of the £400 to charity as we aren't on our arse but also need some of the relief

shufflestep · 26/09/2022 21:45

There are obviously lots of people who can't afford to do this, I am not meaning to upset you if you are amongst those. This is aimed squarely at the better off, not intended to make anyone feel guilty. But there are lots of well paid people (by their own account) on Mumsnet, and this appears to be a charity aimed at helping those most affected. For those on prepayment meters, who always have higher unit prices, I hope this also may help spread awareness of a charity that may be able to help.

We are taking part in a similar scheme. Our supplier is refunding the instalments each month a couple of days after the direct debit is taken. Each time we receive the rebate, we will be donating it to a local scheme. I know a few of my neigh tours are taking part, so I do think these schemes stand to be able to support quite a few people.

shufflestep · 26/09/2022 21:48

@Thelnebriati please could you link to the petition? I'm sure most people here will gladly sign.

@SusanKennedy I can't link the petition on this thread (Mumsnet rules) but you can find it here;

I will probably get ripped to pieces but I can afford to do so and was planning on donating but after the mini budget I have changed my mind. Why should any middle earners donate when the 1pc have been given massive tax cuts? I hope everyone gets out and protests, I am willing to join that.

bloodywhitecat · 26/09/2022 21:56

Good idea, I am not rich by any means but I could send some of the money to the fuel bank. I remember being so hard up we couldn't afford that I would go without food so the kids could eat. I always vowed I would do something to help if I found myself able to.

worriedatthistime · 26/09/2022 22:01

We have a prepayment and not heard from my supplier how they intend to do this
Unfortunately despite being ok earners in my opinion we cannot afford to not have the payment as prices are high and pre payment even higher it seems

Norriscolesbag · 26/09/2022 22:06

Nice idea this OP.

most suppliers If smart meters are Automatically applying credit to the electricity account At the beginning of each month for five months.

If the traditional pay-as-you-go meter is such as key and card and they are sending the top up vouchers in the post at the beginning of each month

SausagePourHomme · 26/09/2022 22:07
