Do you treat yourself with a massage?

The last couple of times I’ve had a massage (in the last couple of years not regularly!) I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m thinking perhaps I should treat myself more often. Is it a bit ott to have a massage once a month for example?! I think there are known to be benefits aren’t there?

The trouble is finding someone thats really good. At a pound a minute its not a cheap treat and ive had so many duff ones😕

Gosh yes. Nothing more disappointing than a crap massage, especially when it costs so much!

itsthesoundofthepolice · 26/09/2022 20:41

Yes I go monthly for a hours massage. I'm fortunate that it's affordable for me and if my position were to change I'd look to see if anything else could be cut before I took that away. I occasionally go for an extra one if I feel I need it.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/09/2022 20:45

Yes I do it occasionally, I find reflexology really helps my MS.

You can also volunteer to be a practice body at a massage school, I used to do that. Only issue is you have to contend with the weirder remedial classes too.

How to I go about enrolling in this?!

dizzyupthegirl86 · 26/09/2022 21:06

I tend to go once every 4-6 weeks as well. I know I’ve had a really good one when I come out feeling half drunk. I’m lucky that it’s not a stretch for me (no DCs) but it also feels like a real treat. Especially in the winter, it’s brilliant to have a massage when it’s pouring with rain and miserable outside, then go home and space out with a blanket.

Coldilox · 26/09/2022 21:09

I have a Thai massage every month or two. I wouldn’t say it’s a treat, she is fucking brutal with me and it’s basically an hour of pain. But I have a lot of tight muscles and a day or two after the massage I can really feel the benefit of it.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 26/09/2022 21:11

I like a Thai massage too. No messing about with gentle strokes.

TeddyBeans · 26/09/2022 21:15

My friend and I go as a treat. It's usually once every couple of months but I think we're going to try and up it to once a month at a minimum. It's a little bit of luxury for me

PigsInBlanketyBlankets · 26/09/2022 21:56

Yep. Have a spa membership and go 3/4 times a week. Probably have a massage 2/3 times a month. A good wrap/scrub once a month too.

Anonymouslyposting · 26/09/2022 22:16

Properly love a massage - but for me it’s a couple of times a year max, if I could afford the time and cost I’d do it weekly (or at least monthly).

honeyfox · 26/09/2022 22:20

I have a deep tissue massage a couple of times a year as I have back issues. Omg you come out as high as a kite but it's bloody painful 😖

ShadowoftheFall · 26/09/2022 22:32

No. Can’t imagine anything worse than a stranger putting their hands on me.

Thursa · 26/09/2022 23:04

Years ago I had to go for massage therapy for fibromyalgia, and I absolutely hated it. Having a stranger put their hands on me is a nightmare situation for me. I don’t even enjoy going to the hairdressers.

Bojheybuddy · 26/09/2022 23:08

I have a therapist that comes to the house so I can just fall into bed for a snooze afterwards.

chatterbug22 · 26/09/2022 23:18

No but I’d love to! Might just look into it now

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 26/09/2022 23:36

I'd love a massage. But I don't know the difference between all the types.

I get a sore back and tight muscles. What should I go for?

And OP if you can afford it or otherwise budget for it...go for it!

PeloFondo · 26/09/2022 23:43

I like sports massages, well not like Grin as they're sore but I feel better after. Usually pay about £25

Discovereads · 26/09/2022 23:47

If you like that sort of thing, why not? I can’t think of anything worse than a stranger pawing me, but everyone’s different.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/09/2022 23:53

It’s a great thing to do. Unfortunately my back muscles are so tight it’s more painful than relaxing. I book it as a treat and then I think WTF was I thinking as I lie there in agony gritting my teeth as some apparently nice young man digs his elbow into my shoulder to inflict what feels like major muscle injury.. . I do feel better (a while) later though

Iwanttoholdyourham · 27/09/2022 00:00

I go monthly.

I spend next to nothing on the sort of beauty treatments many women spend money on (e.g. make-up, nails, hair, etc), and I justify the massages as medical treatment. I get really awful knotted shoulders from my stressful office job and big boobs, and the massage fixes the problem, thus allowing me to continue hunched over my laptop doing something stressful...

We all have priorities. I've made this mine, and I have zero regrets.

DilemmaDelilah · 27/09/2022 07:09

I have a monthly massage to deal with back and neck issues. I consider it a necessity rather than a treat though. However I do treat myself to an Indian head massage or something similar if we go on holiday or for my birthday etc. That is a REAL treat!

I like a Swedish massage. Aromatherapy ones are a bit wishy washy I think. I’ve only ever had one hot stone massage and it wasn’t great. But Swedish is where they use long sweeping strokes and also work the knots out. That one works for me (always have knots around my shoulders) so I’ve never gone for anything more hardcore but the Thai ones do sound tempting!

if you find someone who specialises in massage, you should be able to tell them your main gripes and they’ll suggest something suitable.

10HailMarys · 27/09/2022 13:17

I mean... just do what you like?! I don't really see why you'd need to check if it was OK. If you've got the money to spend on a treat for yourself, spend it on whatever makes you happy. For you, that's a massage. For me it would be something else. But you don't have to justify it if you can afford it and you love it.

sueelleker · 27/09/2022 13:30

AtleastitsnotMonday · 26/09/2022 20:11

Yes I do. It's a luxury I know but I can afford it and I do suffer from lots of knots and sore muscles, so if it helps, why not?

Me too-I suffer a lot of upper back pain, so I go every 4 weeks and it really helps. I sometimes make an extra appointment in between if it's really bad. They're not generally very relaxing though, as the masseuse really has to dig into the knots.

Zippedydoo123 · 27/09/2022 13:43

I used to but not since cost of living crisis. Regular walking gentle yoga and an occasional bath I now feel I can manage without it. Especially the walking helps.
