Spending money for a week in New York?

Feofjwonxoaks · 25/09/2022 12:54

Well 6 days. My partner and I, no children. We'd like to book onto some tours etc. As well. Would need some sort of subway pass.
Want to try new places to eat but i don't think we'll be eating in restaurants for every meal, probably some quick takeaway stuff too.
Wondering if £300 each (obviously converted) would be enough?

£50 a day wouldn't get you far in Newcastle let alone New York.

You can find out tour prices and entry fees online. Prioritise the ones you definitely don't want to miss and budget accordingly. Maybe check out some menus of places you want to eat so you get an idea of prices? I know others have mentioned tips, it's not optional over there.

I would aim for £150 each per day minimum.

Backmebring · 25/09/2022 13:27

£300
per day, right?

Stopsnowing · 25/09/2022 13:30

I went In May and the exchange rate meant everything was really unaffordable. 20 quid for a wrap and drink at lunch. 90 quid for a very simple meal. I ended up just walking around a lot and I won’t go back until the exchange rate improves

BritWifeInUSA · 25/09/2022 13:33

Things are more expensive here than the UK, always have been. It’s a myth that life is cheap here. The only things cheaper here than the UK are fast food and gasoline and even that’s not necessarily the case now with the exchange rate. A decent meal for two is going to cost around $100. Tours - look up the prices online and add them up. I think you’re going yo need at least $1000. That’s what I would budget for 6 days if I were going.

mummyh2016 · 25/09/2022 13:34

£1500-£2000 I'd say you'd need for both of you. We did 5 nights in NY and 6 nights in Vegas and spent more or less £4k spending money on our honeymoon. Did a little bit of shopping and a bit of gambling in Vegas but I don't think we spent more than £600 on those though. We spent more in NY than Vegas fyi. We'd booked tours and passes back in the UK also so they didn't come out of our spending money. We aren't flash either, I don't think we ate out anywhere posh in NY, most of the time we were grabbing a burger or something off a food stall.

mummyh2016 · 25/09/2022 13:35

This was 7 years ago when exchange rate was better also!

Midnights · 25/09/2022 13:38

For two of us we spent about 5k in 5 days in December, and the same in July for 6 days 😂 £300 converted is about $300 as it's basically 1:1 at the moment.

We do overspend tbh, but £300 is not even going to cover your tips and breakfasts.

Bizzyone · 25/09/2022 13:38

We went start of this year and absolutely burned through moñey, even though we had booked things before we went! Eating out, drinks, tips, plus 20% tax on top of menu prices etc..

If you dont want to be missing out on things or scrimping then at least $200-300 per day and thats not for anything particularly fancy! Glass of wine is $15 for example, standard sit in diner breakfast will come to near $80 once tax and tips applied..

Fuuuuuckit · 25/09/2022 13:40

The New York Pass is currently $279 each for 5 days, we used it A LOT when we went, but there are some exclusions which would obvs cost extra. Eating can be cheap but you'd be tied to your hotel if you went half board, so be prepared for some expensive meals (and possibly booking in advance post-covid).

We did an awful lot of walking but also used the bus and subway.

It's a once in a lifetime visit for many folk, now is not the time to scrimp. You can always convert the dollars back to £ if you don't spend them!

Appleblum · 25/09/2022 13:41

No way. £300 per day is more realistic.

QuizzlyBears · 25/09/2022 13:45

I spend a lot of time in the States and was in NYC fairly recently, £300 per day is probably more like it when you factor in food/transport/tours and tips. A quick service fast food type meal for two is easily $40 ish, restaurants over $100 without alcohol for a couple of courses. We went to Ellen’s for lunch - two sandwiches, two milkshakes plus tax and tip was $110. The hop on bus tour is around $70 per person. America is expensive, food has rocketed and NYC is a tourist trap!

Wickerbaskethandle · 25/09/2022 13:51

Like very thing it depends on what you want to do
We are going for 4 days shortly which we do regularly. We dont do tourist attractions as done before. Breakfast is included at hotel and have booked dinner out each night at some nice restaurants- lunch will be on street or not at all.

Aside from shopping I am expecting is to spend about $20 in from JFK on subway. $30 a day for travel. $300 for dinner/drinks each evening (have some amex credit and so it will be less when charged)

I would price up what you want to do before leaping for a pass. If you can book to go up the statue it is very cheap - but places are very limited- takes a long time! Crown access is brilliant if it is open

HamiltonFan1 · 25/09/2022 13:52

Jesus Christ no, we spent more than that a day each when you're looking at travel, tours, food, shows etc.

LilacPoppy · 25/09/2022 13:53

No I would take $1000 each.

whynotwhatknot · 25/09/2022 13:54

maybe per day-its just nor realistic what youre trying to do have you actually booked it yet

SocksAndTheCity · 25/09/2022 13:58

I think £150-200 a day each is doable if you're careful, especially if you've got breakfast included wherever you're staying.

Having run out of money in Manhattan once years ago (thankfully on my last day there), I wouldn't recommend it.

Wickerbaskethandle · 25/09/2022 14:02

Oh- I forgot -I go to art galleries which tend to be about $25 each.

Wickerbaskethandle · 25/09/2022 14:04

Maybe get a 2 day pass and try and cram in the big/expensive attractions. they pay as you go for the rest?

Wickerbaskethandle · 25/09/2022 14:07

And remember the first few days you may be tired- so big ticket things later in the week?

deedledeedledum · 25/09/2022 14:11

Remember tipping is not optional. That's how the servers get paid. It's how it works. No point getting all high and mighty about how they should be paid properly. The only person missing out if you do that is the server. In some places if they don't get a tip they have to pay out of their own pockets to make up the shortfall in the tip kitty

AvonCallingBarksdale · 25/09/2022 14:13

We were there last month. You’ll need at least £200 per day - even if you do free stuff like Staten Island ferry/High Line, both of which are great, eating out is eye-watering and things that cost, like museums and galleries are v expensive. It’s not a place to go unless you’re prepared that it’s going to cost you!! Having said that, I love the place, always have a brilliant time there.

Chanel05 · 25/09/2022 14:13

I last went to New York 5 years ago and a week's subway pass was $33 per person, so very reasonable. However, Empire State was around $70pp, 9/11 museum wasn't too cheap (but so worth it) so I think you will each need a good $1,000 each. It's not cheap to eat out either and you need to factor in tips on top of that. A $70 meal for 2 should be costing $84 including tip.

FrownedUpon · 25/09/2022 14:14

1k each should be ok.

icelolly12 · 25/09/2022 14:16

Come on OP, £300 isn't enough for a week in Bulgaria never mind NYC

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/09/2022 14:25

Yeah sorry OP! I think you’re looking at more like £1200-1500 to be honest!
