She’s read all the usual; Harry Potter, David Walliams etc.

I got some Judy Blumes but she’s not keen on them

Any suggestions for some age appropriate books? The Lottie Brooks look great but a bit too old

How is this an AIBU…?

If she likes fantasy you could try Tamora Pierce? My 10 year old is reading them at the moment and loving them. Also, the Podkin books by Kieran Larwood are great!

I think I was about 9 or 10 when I discovered Rosemary Sutcliff. It's historical fiction, and I find some of them really emotionally enjoyable. My first and favourite is The Armourer's House, which is about a little girl in Tudor London, and is just lovely. I also really like Sun Horse Moon Horse, which is about ancient Iceni tribal people and the Uffington White Horse, and Dawn Wind (but perhaps too much for age 9) which is about a boy who survives the Saxon invasion and what happens to him. Another lovely one is The Shield Ring, which is about a little Saxon girl escaping from the invading Vikings and is set in the Lake district.

I second Mallory towers I loved those books! My Dd loves the Tom Gates books.

swimmingincustard · 22/09/2022 20:30

Robin Stevens - murder most unladylike series are my DDs favourite.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 22/09/2022 20:32

My 9 year old is ploughing through a Series of Unfortunate Events.

She’s also got into Enid Blyton.

FuzzyPuffling · 22/09/2022 20:32

The Justice Jones series by Elly Griffiths. Sort of Malory Towers mixed with Agatha Christie!

MbatataOwl · 22/09/2022 20:36

Warrior cats by Erin hunter
Lost rainforest by Eliot Schrefer
High-rise mystery by Sharba Jackson

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 22/09/2022 20:39

Diana Wynne Jones - so many to choose from and all about right for 9, I would say. Mostly fantasy, some real life with fantastical elements. Her Chrestomanci series is great, as is Howl's Moving Castle and its two sequels.

Roman Mysteries

Demon Headmaster series

Bernard's Watch

Holes by Louis Sachar (There's a boy in the girls bathroom is also great for this age)

Kenwouldmixitup · 22/09/2022 20:40

Judith Eagle’s books based on a strong female adventure story.

Redshores · 22/09/2022 20:43

The Penderwicks - amazing series!
Also Kate Dicamillo, Hilary McKay, Eva Ibbotson.

Dork diaries were a big hit at the age of 9 for my daughter and her friends. Lottie brooks was also a hit and had her and friends laughing out loud - school year 5/6.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 22/09/2022 20:55

Have a look at The Reader Teacher, suggestions of books by year group and usually excellent choices. Also search for MG or Middle grade books a term that has made its way over from the USA. A few ideas from here works be Jenny Pearson, Anna Houghton, the Murder Most Unladylike series, The Land if Roar, Sophie Anderson, Adventures on Trains. Plenty more!

MrsPnut · 22/09/2022 20:59

SayCheeseBoris · 22/09/2022 21:02

8yo DD loves the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series and some Roald Dhal.

33goingon64 · 22/09/2022 21:06

The Incredibly Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone is brilliant. So empowering for girls but my DS loved it (and great that he enjoyed all the strong women!)

Deliaskis · 22/09/2022 21:06

My daughter has really enjoyed the Nevermore series, and also School for Skylarks.

bumpytrumpy · 22/09/2022 21:07

My 9yo is reading the Percy Jackson series

ChocolateCakeYum · 22/09/2022 21:11

Does she have a school planner? A lot of them have book recommendations in them.
