She’s read all the usual; Harry Potter, David Walliams etc.

I got some Judy Blumes but she’s not keen on them

Any suggestions for some age appropriate books? The Lottie Brooks look great but a bit too old

Chronicles of Narnia were my favorite at that age.
Also kid detective stuff (Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Hardy Boys)
And stories with horses in them: The Black Stallion, Black Beauty, Misty of Chincoteague, Spurs for Suzanna
… or dogs: The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Incredible Journey
and the Paddington Bear stories.

Robin Stevens - murder most unladylike series are my DDs favourite.

My almost 9 year has just started this one after I read a review on here.

I thoroughly enjoyed it 😆

donttellmehesalive · 22/09/2022 21:17

Wolf Brother series.

The chronicles of Narnia.

Classics like wizard of Oz.

donttellmehesalive · 22/09/2022 21:17

The Creakers

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/09/2022 21:18

My DD has adored the Warrior Cats books since about age 9.

Xmasbaby11 · 22/09/2022 21:19

My dd are 8 and 10.

I would suggest Jacqueline Wilson, Roald Dahl, Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, The Creakers. Lots of others I can't think of right now. There are some great books around!

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 22/09/2022 21:20

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson. It's the one book I remember being obsessed with around that age

Augend23 · 22/09/2022 21:20

Percy Jackson is excellent. She might really enjoy the H.I.V.E books as well. What about something like Nancy Drew? There's millions of them if she does like them.

junebirthdaygirl · 22/09/2022 21:22

Michael Morporgo books are popular too

Sorehandsandfeet · 22/09/2022 21:26

Ballet shoes -Noel Streatfield
Lucy and the big bad wolf
Nancy Drew series
Enid Blyton

ExHack · 22/09/2022 21:26

And how could I forget “Gentle Ben”… A story about a lonely boy in Alaska who becomes best friends with a lonely captive grizzly bear.

and

Bettina's Secret (a girl in hospital with a broken leg meets a mysterious night nurse)

Frog, The Horse That Knew No Master (but gets reformed of course when he meets the right one)

This thread is making me want to re-read all these books. I still have a few of them complete with ice-cream stains on the pages. (Oh to have those pre-adolescent weekends back!)

ExHack · 22/09/2022 21:29

Just one more: "Owls in the Family". A Canadian kid adopts two orphaned owls and mayhem ensues. I remember laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.

Seashor · 22/09/2022 21:34

Picklewitch and Jack by Claire Barker. My class absolutely love her books.

Bigtom · 22/09/2022 21:38

Scarlett and Ivy books are popular in our house

belleface · 22/09/2022 21:39

I second the Judith Eagle books - really great stories

Eranzer · 22/09/2022 21:46

Lord of the Rings? The Hobbit? Think I was around that age when I read those.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 22/09/2022 21:48

My 2 year old is quite enjoying Hunger Games

Or on a serious note my D

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 22/09/2022 21:48

*my DD loved the Benedict Society at that age

cinnabongene · 22/09/2022 21:49

My DD loved the Nevermoor book series when she was 8-9

Fivews · 22/09/2022 21:58

My DD is 9 and loves Lottie Brooks, also check out Eddie Ekhart by Rosie Jones

BetsyBigNose · 22/09/2022 21:58

Another vote for A Series of Unfortunate Events here, they were very popular in our house when our DDs were 8/9/10 ish and 15 year old DD occasionally rereads one or two if she's waiting for new books to be delivered!

BlueThroughandThrough · 22/09/2022 21:59

Another vote for Diary of a wimpy kid series. My dd enjoys a lot of comic style books like Max and the Midknight's, The Bad Guys and Catkid/Captain underpants. As well as the horrible histories series and silly style books like Danger is Everywhere. (Her favourites are still David Walliams and Harry Potter). We spend a lot of time in the library.

Runningnewbie · 22/09/2022 22:30

thank you so much lots of great ideas!

my 10 yo DD is obsessed with Wings of Fire, there are 15 in the series so far. She just moved on to Land of Stories which she is really enjoying.

Her sister at that age loved, wimpy kid, anything percy jackson etc, keeper of the lost cities

Stompythedinosaur · 22/09/2022 23:07

A Girl Called Justice is excellent.
