Do the adults who live in your house sit ON the kitchen island or worktops?

YABU - it's OK for them to sit on the kitchen island/worktops
YANBU - they should sit somewhere else

The little studs on the back of a pair of jeans can scratch a work surface!

Jellybean23 · 21/09/2022 21:56

Is there anything set into to island - like a sink? If so, his weight could crack the seal

LuckyLil · 21/09/2022 21:46

Unless he's naked at the time I can't get excited about it myself.

Oh boy!

Where does everyone else shag these days?

I'm must be behind the times 🙂

So if he does it in his pants it's fine? 🤢

😂😂 sorry, I meant night clothes or fresh clothes. Not something he wore out and about

kimchifox · 21/09/2022 22:00

I don't - our kitchen design isn't very conducive - but I did catch a DC sitting right in the middle of the island cross legged listening to the radio news. I can't say I had a problem with it. I hate our kitchen and I'm constantly cleaning the surfaces anyway as all members of the household make a mess at all times. I'm more annoyed when they can't mop up a spillage. Lazy fuckers

DeanStockwelll · 21/09/2022 22:01

I wouldn't like this either op , there isn't room in my kitchen for chairs but I still wouldn't sit on the work top.

I also don't let my cat on the work top , the idea of him coming out of his litter box then strolling on my work top
No thank you !

MacaroniBaloney · 21/09/2022 22:01

I've never seen an adult sat on a kitchen worktop in my life!

yogonop · 21/09/2022 22:02

yogonop · 21/09/2022 21:34

As long as he doesn't do it in his outerwear and cleans it before cooking/eating id say it's fine

May I add thats for hygiene only, but the sight of an adult sitting on a kitchen island sounds a bit ridiculous to me

Violashift · 21/09/2022 22:02

Person who fitted the quartz said this was a big no no.

Isausernameavailable · 21/09/2022 22:03

Gross. Sit on a chair.

TwinkleChristmas · 21/09/2022 22:06

I do it, don’t see a problem with it and I wouldn’t have my partner tell me to get off as I’m not a child.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/09/2022 22:06

Nobody sits on the worktops in our house, but I couldn't get upset about it. I also wouldn't be dictating to another adult where they can and can't sit in their own house!!

FatOaf · 21/09/2022 22:06

I always politely move them away or hang them up.

This is a uniquely Mumsnet definition of "politely".

teenagetantrums · 21/09/2022 22:10

This really would not bother me. Our kitchen has no space to do this. But l don't understand why it would be a problem.
I worked in supermarket and believe me any food packaging is probably more dirty then someone's jeans.

zurala · 21/09/2022 22:11

I can't get my head around why anyone would sit on a kitchen worktop or table.
YANBU op, this wouldn't happen in my house. Worktops and tables are for food, not bottoms.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/09/2022 21:55

Dinner round at yours sounds v relaxed..

Actually it is! I just have a bugbear about that one thing. Grin

LegoFiends · 21/09/2022 22:14

I wouldn’t sit on them myself but wouldn’t stop the other adult who paid for them doing what they want to with them

kittenkipping · 21/09/2022 22:17

I dont see a problem, but then I do also put my handbag on the kitchen table, and sometimes my arse (occasionally even a bare arse when the kids aren't around and dh and I relive the glory days) doesn't everyone wipe their surfaces down before food prep or serving?

It's great to sit around listening to music and drinking wine with friends, some around the table, others leaning and some even upon the worktops. Or when I'm food prepping on one side of the kitchen my daughter will hop up the other side so we can chat whilst looking at each other (weird layout) I guess my lifestyle is just a little more informal than others (or outright filthy if some are to be believed Shock)

BearBirdBaboon · 21/09/2022 22:19

Thank you for your responses so far! Interesting to read all of your differing views!

I’ve never known anyone to do this….is it because I’m really short and it takes huge amounts of effort to hoist myself up?

BearBirdBaboon · 21/09/2022 22:21

@Violashift We have quartz - can I ask why it shouldn't be sat on? (We didn't install our kitchen, so we never got any advice about it.)

I also don’t like it when people come round and put their handbag on my kitchen table. Yuck! No idea where bags have been - on the floor of restaurants or a public loo, floor of tube etc. I always politely move them away or hang them up.

Do you not have plates, serving dishes or placemats then? You're eating directly off the table? Or is it you serve the food on the table?

Brigante9 · 21/09/2022 22:23

Euw, arse sweat, no thanks.

whoopdedo · 21/09/2022 22:27

Anyone raised in New Zealand would probably avoid this as it's deemed culturally inappropriate due to hygiene. In my head I can't focus on anything else when a bum meets a table for that reason. I feel instantly uncomfortable Smile
